Former Indian cricketer and parliamentarian, Gautam Gambhir, came down heavily on the protestors against the Indian government through a post on social media which read that people, who burn the national flag will have to serve two years in the military. Gambhir, a cricketer-turned-politician, is a member of Indian Parliament from the East constituency of Delhi. The 37-year-old in his latest post on Twitter lashed out at those that disrespected the Indian flag and shared a popular quote from veteran US army general James Mattis, who had once famously said that people who burn the national flag should not be jailed but made to serve in the army for two years. Gautam Gambhir Lashes Out at Shahid Afridi Over His Tweet on Kashmir Issue.

Mattis had further stated that once those people serve in the army, they will be cured of any desire to burn the flag ever again. Mattis had served as Marine Corps general in the Iran War and Afghanistan War and is also a former US Defence Secretary. In his latest post, MP Gambhir borrowed the quote from Mattis to suggest a solution for those burning the national flag or showing any sort of disrespect towards national symbols. The post – which had Mattis’ famous quote – also included a message that said “This should be implemented in our country too” referring to India. Gautam Gambhir Proposes Renaming Yamuna Sports Complex After Arun Jaitley.

He was elected as a Member of Parliament (MP) from the East Delhi constituency in the 2018 Lok Sabha Elections.

He had in 2017 also voiced his anger towards anti-nationals when speculations rifled that many Indians in abroad and those in the Jammu Kashmir region had burned the national flag and also lighted effigies in protest over the central government’s treatment of Kashmir. Many had forgotten what the Indian tri-colour stands for, Gambhir had said then.
