FIFA World Cup 2018 is halfway in the tournament and the exits of Germany, Argentina, Portugal, and Spain have shocked fans across the globe. As much as these shock knock-outs have made to the news, the count of own goals in the 2018 FIFA World Cup has hit the headlines too! In the ongoing football World Cup in Russia, the players have scored the most number of own goals, i.e. 10. The tournament has eclipsed the record which was last recorded during the 1998 FIFA World Cup in France.

In the match between Spain and Russia, on July 1, Russia’s Sergei Ignashevich scored an own goal giving Spain a lead in their pre-quarterfinal match. However, the Spanish side lost the match after the scores were tied 1-1 after extra time and, eventually, the Russian team won it by 4-3 in the penalty shootout.

Talking about the most number of own goals, the second best in the list is 1998 World Cup in France. The previous edition of FIFA World Cup, in 2014 in Brazil, is third on the list of most number of own goals. We take a look at the list of World Cups in context of own goals scored.
