Uruguay and Portugal had a contrasting run in the group stage. While Uruguay won all their three matches Portugal could secure only one win. Uruguay in their first two matches defeated Egypt and Saudi Arabia by a similar margin of 1-0. La Celeste then in their last group stage match handed home side Russia a 3-0 defeat.
Portugal, on the other hand, began with a 3-3 draw against Spain. It was Cristiano Ronaldo’s hat-trick that helped Portugals secure a draw. Portugal then registered 1-0 win over Morocco and in their last group stage outing Seleccao das Quinas were held to 1-1 draw by Iran after an extra time goal by Karim Ansarifard.
