Switzerland are living up to their billing as one of the top sides in international football and that ranking as world’s number sixth rank team is justified. In two keenly contested games against Brazil and Serbia, they kept themselves composed even when the matters were not in their hand and in the end came up with the goods. It is this resilience that sees them in a comfortable position in Group E, with same points as leaders Brazil and second only due to the goal difference. Costa Rica though has had the misfortune of being the weeping boys of this group and are out of the tournament.
There will be no repeat of the fairytale of the 2014 World Cup for Costa Rica in Russia which must be pretty disappointing for their fans. The signs were there from the start as they were having a torrid time in the international friendlies prior to the cup. The form of Keylor Navas is the only positive news that has emerged from their camp so far and he will need to be on the top of his game once again when his side fights for pride against the Swiss. They are yet to score in Russia, owing mainly to their mediocrity in the final third where they need to improve a lot.
Switzerland knows a draw will help them make it to the next round but playing for a draw is a dangerous proposition. Vladimir Petkovic will be setting his side for a win knowing well Switzerland has not lost to a CONCACAF nation at the finals of a World Cup event. Granit Xhaka and Xherdan Shaqiri, who were in the news for their inflammatory goal celebration against Serbia, have been fined by FIFA but are expected to start in this crucial match. Skipper Stephan Lichtsteiner who recently signed for Arsenal was also reprimanded by the game’s governing body but the trio escaped two-game ban which would have wrecked the Swiss campaign.
Costa Rica have now gone five matches without a win at World Cup finals and looks like the wait is only going to increase for a period of another four years should they qualify for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
