Spain takes on Tunisia in an international friendly with both these nations looking to continue to build their fitness and momentum ahead of the 2018 World Cup in Russia. Julen Lopetegui’s side drew their last game against Switzerland 1-1 but the side that started against the Swiss was more or less consisting of second rung of players. But the depth of Spanish squad is such that there is not much of a difference between the first choice starting eleven and the backup players. Tunisia, who on the other hand is playing in its first World Cup since 2006, does not have such luxury.
The major talking point for Spain in the last match was the howler from David De Gea, but the Manchester United player was publically backed by the Spanish coach in a move certain to boost the confidence of the Spanish no 1. David Silva and Isco are two playmakers out of whom one has to be content with a place on the bench. It is highly likely that both may be given run-ins tonight as the last chance to secure a place in the starting eleven. Veteran Andres Iniesta, playing in his last tournament with Spain will start against Tunisia and he can open up the Tunisian defense with his pinpoint passing.
Tunisia has remained undefeated in their last nine games including the ill-fated tie against Turkey. They should welcome back key player Wahbi Khazri who did not feature in the last game. The former Sunderland man who is on loan to French club Rennes has scored 11 goals for them in the last season. Their squad is relatively inexperienced when it comes to international football with only two players having more than 20 caps to their name. With both these countries facing tough oppositions in the group phase, it is important they arrive in Russia with optimism and proper mindset.
Spain will not find it easy to topple the Tunisians who as seen in the qualifiers like to defend deep. They will have to show patience with the bulk of possession they would have to break down the opposition. This will give Tunisia the chance to counter Spain and this means we have a very exciting match on our hands.
