Premier League 2024-25: Five New Rules Accommodated to Reduce Time Wastage and Improve Ruling in Upcoming EPL Season
After the end of continental competitions and the Paris Olympics 2024, the club-level football games will start from mid-August. The Premier League 2024-25 season is just two days away and here are some of the new changes incorporated to pace up the proceedings and have strict rulings during the games.
After exciting international games, players will be back in action, representing their clubs in different high-profile leagues. English Premier League, commonly known as EPL is one of the most followed and competitive leagues of them all and it will start on August 17. Ahead of the kick-off, there are some changes in rules that will allow to pace up the game and also provide extra authority to the on-field umpires. Check out the newly introduced rules and changes in rules below ahead of the start of the Premier League 2024-25 season, Ex-England Footballer Moses Swaibu Reveals Match-Fixing Approaches to Top Premier League Players: Report.
Cutting Down the ‘Extra Time’ Post Regular Time
With many games extending the 100-minute mark last season, the Premier League 2024-25 season will have some cutting in the ‘extra-time’. After goals, officials will only add time to the end of matches if celebrations exceed 30 seconds. Ball boys are now permitted to hand the ball to the players or keepers. If it takes significant time to retrieve the ball, players must go to the nearest cone to collect a replacement ball themselves to restart play. This will heavily reduce the ‘extra-time’ at the end of the game.
Substitutions Per Team
While the number of substitutions per team in a match remains the same, there is a change made considering the ‘chance to make subs at a time’. A slight tweak is that from the Premier League 2024-25 season, the number of substitutes allowed to warm up at the same time on the perimeter of the pitch during a match has gone up from three to five players per team. This is to correspond with the fact that teams are able to make five substitutions at any one time.
Handball and Penalty Situations
From the Premier League 2024-2 season, referees will not automatically show a yellow card to players who have handled the ball and conceded a penalty. The non-deliberate handball offence for which penalties are awarded is to be sanctioned in the same way as fouls which are an attempt to play the ball or a challenge for the ball. Similarly, while placing the ball for penalty part of the ball must touch or overhang the centre of the penalty mark. Also, encroachment by players at the moment the penalty is taken will be penalised only if it has an impact on the play.
VAR Upgrade
After a huge row over the VAR decisions, the Premier League 2024-25 will use smart VAR technology used in the UEFA Euro 2024 tournament. This is for accurate decision-making. Also, Fans will have some access virtually as the Premier League is launching a special handler explaining the decision to keep transparency in decisions.
Strict Actions on Players Arguing with Official
On similar grounds, only the captain of the team is allowed to talk with officials, and players other than the captain will be penalised if found arguing with the referee and can even receive a card.
