After Kalinic was sent home, Croatia managed to register an impressive 3-0 win over Argentina and outplayed Iceland 2-1 to top their group. In the knock out stages, Croatia defeated Denmark in Round of 16 match on penalties and in quarterfinal defeated the hosts Russia on penalties as well. In the semis, Croatia knocked out England to advance to the final.
