One such incident occurred at the Mineirão Stadium in Brazil just before the crunch semi-final clash between Brazil and Argentina in Copa America 2019. Some kids, who were part of the mascot group to accompany the players of both teams, spotted Messi entering the stadium dugout and immediately got excited. They could be seen nudging each other in excitement as soon as they saw the Argentina skipper arrive. Argentina beat Qatar and drew with Paraguay to finish second in Group B and qualify for the quarter-finals where they overcame Venezuela 2-0 to set-up a semi-final clash against arch-rivals Brazil. The moment came while the players were waiting in the dug-out to come out for the national anthem just before BRA vs ARG game in Copa America 2019. Some Players of both teams had gathered along with the mascots and were waiting for the others – including Messi – to join. That is when some of the mascots saw Messi and started whispering among themselves that they just Messi. The kids could be heard telling each other that Messi was coming and although the football great did not shake hands or meet them, the fact that they were able to see one of the greatest footballers made the kids happy. Perhaps Messi might have met them after the game and made their day but just seeing him was a special moment for them to savour.
Meanwhile, Brazil knocked Argentina out of the 2019 Copa America with a 2-0 victory. Forward Gabriel Jesus scored the opening goal as early as the 19th minute before Roberto Firmino sealed the win with a second in the 71st minute. Brazil had topped Group A with two wins and a loss in their three group-stage matches. They have now reached the finals for the first time since 2007.
