Lionel Messi was voted the second-best player in La Liga for this season despite topping the goalscoring and assists making charts. Real Madrid’s Karim Benzema took the top spot after leading Real Madrid to the La Liga 2019-20 title while his teammate and captain Sergio Ramos came third. Messi enjoyed another great individual season and won a record seventh Pichichi Trophy after netting 25 goals – the most by any player in La Liga this season. The voting was conducted by Spanish newspaper Marca, who awards the Pichichi trophy to the highest goalscorer in every single La Liga season. Real Madrid striker Benzema was voted the best player in La Liga this season while Messi came second and Ramos finished third. Benzema topped with 37% per cent of votes and will be crowned the best player in the league for La Liga 2019-20 while six-time Ballon d’Or winner Messi got 31% votes.

Benzema scored 21 goals this season helping Real lift a 34th La Liga title their second league title in four seasons. Benzema also had assisted eight goals this season. Ramos came third with 14% votes. Real goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, who finished seventh with 2% of votes, was the only other Real players in the top 10 while Messi was the only Barcelona player.

Ramos scored 11 goals this La Liga season, which is the most scored by a defender in a single league campaign in this century across Europe’s top five leagues. Sevilla winger Lucas Ocampos came fourth in the best player voting with 4% of votes while Atletico Madrid goalkeeper Jan Oblak completed the top five.
