Messi has fallen out of the honour for the first time in 12 years. Since 2006, the Barcelona superstar has always made it to the shortlist for the overall player of the year except this time. According to The Telegraph, Messi was part of the top 10 nominees considered for the award along with names like Harry Kane, Kylian Mbappe, Kevin De Bruyne, Raphael Varane, Antoine Greizmann, and Eden Hazard but failed to make the cut in the top three. Luka Modric, the World Cup Golden Ball winner, has been named in the shortlist after his amazing run at the World Cup. Modric helped his national team Croatia make it to the final of the 2018 FIFA World Cup, which his team lost to France by 4-2.
Mohamed Salah's efforts for Liverpool helped his team reach the final of the Champions League and the Egyptian Liverpool forward has been nominated for his effort of scoring 32 goals. The Juventus striker, Cristiano Ronaldo, has also managed to make it in the final three for every FIFA best player award with the only exception being 2010. He is in the running for the award this year too.
