Lionel Messi missed a crucial penalty in a Group D match against Iceland at FIFA World Cup 2018 in Russia, on Saturday. With scores levelled 1-1, it could have been Messi’s moment, but then the Argentinian captain missed the chance as Iceland’s goalkeeper made a heroic attempt to save his team in an evenly poised match.

Lionel Messi, who is widely regarded as one of the greatest players of all times, was visibly distraught with the missed chance of scoring a goal. Striker Sergio Aguero was fouled in the penalty area by Iceland’s defender Magnusson, in the 63rd minute of the match. The penalty kick by Messi was saved by goalkeeper Haldorsson who dived to his right to keep the day for Iceland!

Earlier in the match, it was the Argentina team who hit the first goal of the game. It was Aguero who hit the first goal of the game, and also his first WC goal, in the 20th minute. However, the happiness was short-lived. Iceland’s Alfreo Finnbogason scored a leveller in the 23rd minute of the match, marching past Argentina’s defence with ease.

There were a lot of other chances in the game; however, Messi and co. were stopped by a determined Iceland team. The Group D match of FIFA World Cup 2018 ended in a draw with the scoreline reading 1-1! It was, indeed, a miraculous day for the Iceland team as they were able to manage a draw, after saving that penalty by, none other than, LIONEL MESSI!
