Tottenham Hotspur in an official statement announced that Jose Mourinho has been appointed as the new manager with a contract that will run until the end of the 2022-23 season. This appointment is followed by the sacking of Mauricio Pochettino on Tuesday after a disappointing start to the season which sees Spurs in the 14th spot in the premier league thus ending the Argentine’s five-and-a-half-year spell at the helm. Jose Mourinho will return to management for the first time since being sacked by Manchester United in December 2018. The 56-year old Portuguese adds Spurs to a long list of previous clubs he has managed including FC Porto, Chelsea, Inter Milan. Mourinho is one of the most accomplished managers in the world having won 25 international trophies. He has won a domestic title in four different countries (Portugal, England, Italy and Spain) and is one of only three managers to have won the UEFA Champions League twice with two different clubs, FC Porto in 2004 and Inter Milan in 2010. He is also a three-time Premier League champion with Chelsea (2005, 2006 and 2015). 'I am excited to be joining a club with such a great heritage and such passionate supporters,' said Mourinho in a statement released by the Premier League club. 'The quality in both the squad and the academy excites me. Working with these players is what has attracted me.' he added. Chairman Daniel Levy is also excited about the Portuguese's appointment. 'In Jose we have one of the most successful managers in football. He has a wealth of experience, can inspire teams and is a great tactician. He has won honours at every club he has coached. We believe he will bring energy and belief to the dressing room.' he said in an official statement.

Mauricio Pochettino was dismissed after being in charge for over five years, less than six months after he took Spurs to their first-ever Champions League final. Reports suggest that Mourinho had turned down jobs abroad, including with clubs in China, Spain and Portugal before penning down a deal with the North-Londoners. Jose Mourinho’s first match in charge of Tottenham will be a London derby away to West Ham on Saturday.
