In football’s history, Italy has been one of the dominating countries, with four World Cups and two Euro championships. The side entered the UEFA Euro 2024 competition as defending champions but crashed out in the Rond of 16 after a 2-0 loss against the Switzerland National Football Team. But the side could face some stern actions in the future after The UEFA (Union of European Football Associations) and FIFA (International Federation of Association Football) have jointly sent a letter warning the FIGC (Italian Football Federation) to consider the new law amendments proposed by the Italian government allowing them control over the sport. Football Italia published the news on July 11. UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin Hails Euro 2024 As ‘Best Ever’ Edition of Tournament.

As per the report, the cause of it all is something called the Mule Amendment, a proposal from Forza Italia politician Giorgio Mule as part of the general Sport Decree. Although the resolution is not passed yet, FIFA and UEFA are looking into the matter seriously and have sent a joint letter to FIGC, warning them of exclusion from FIFA and UEFA tournaments and even the revocation of hosting rights for EURO 2032 if the Government is allowed to interfere in sport.

The proposed change in rule would allow clubs and even players to effectively bypass the sporting justice system and appeal directly to the TAR tribunal. UEFA and FIFA are considering this as giving the Government undue influence over sport and removing the autonomy of the sporting justice system. Confirmed by Sky Sports Italia, the letter from UEFA President Aleksandar Ceferin to Minister for Sport Andrea Abodi warns that “if the text remains the same, we would have to exclude Italian teams from the European Cup competition.” It could also affect their hosting rights to the UEFA Euro 2032 competition where Itay is co-host of the competition along with Turkey.

Reports also mentioned that the amendment has already caused more than enough controversy in Italy even before the letter from FIFA and UEFA. With such stern warnings and backlash within the nation, the amendment will likely be reformulated.
