History of ISL (Indian Super League)
While there is a long history of football in India, league-type fixtures started in 2006 when the AIFF (All India Football Federation), the governing body for the sport in India, reformatted the league as the I-League to professionalize the game. After years of success, in 2014 the league saw big reform when ISL (Indian Super League) was introduced. Starting from eight teams the competition was a major hit and events overtook tradition league in the country in terms of popularity and TV ratings.
Another big change came up in 2017 with ISL teams getting a chance to represent the country at the continental level. AIFF proposed that both Indian Super League and I-League run simultaneously on a short–term basis with the I-League champion retaining the AFC Champions League qualifying stage spot and the AFC Cup qualifying stage spot going to the ISL champion. The league kept on growing and now has 13 teams in the ISL 2024-25 season competing for the title. ISL 2024–25: Top Five Fixtures To Keep an Eye on in September.
