France, the winners of 2018 FIFA World Cup, will receive $38 million in prize money after the Les Bleus defeated Croatia 4-2 in the final at Moscow's Luzhniki stadium. Meanwhile, runners-up Croatia will be handed $28m. The winners and runners-up prize money sees a $3m increase from the 2014 edition in which Germany defeated Argentina. Belgium, who finished third after their win over England in the third-place playoff, will receive $24m. England, on other hand, will take home $22m for finishing fourth. The total prize money distributed at the 2018 FIFA World Cup has increased by almost $50m to $400m as compared to $358m four years ago in Brazil, reports ESPN. Meanwhile, France lifted their second World Cup title. The first World Cup title for France came in 1998 when they defeated Brazil at home.
This was France’s third World Cup final appearance. The Les Bleus qualified for the final during the 2006 edition as well but lost to Italy in the final via a penalty shootout. Coming back to the final, Antoine Griezmann, Paul Pogba and Kylian Mbappe were the goal-scorers for France after Mario Mandzukic’s own goal gave the eventual champions a lead in the 18th minute. Croatia managed to find the net twice via Ivan Perisic in the 28th minute and Mandzukic in the 69th minute, but that was not enough to help them win the title.
