The FIFA World Cup Round of 16 is over, and we have eight teams who have qualified for the quarterfinals of the multi-nation mega-tournament in Russia. Teams of France, Uruguay, Russia, Croatia, Brazil, Belgium, Sweden, and England have qualified for the 2018 FIFA World Cup. The quarterfinal round of the World Cup will be played on July 6 and 7, with doubleheaders on both the days.

The shock exits of Lionel Messi-led Argentina, Cristiano Ronaldo-led Portugal, and Sergio Ramos-led Spain were the talking points of the pre-quarterfinals of football World Cup in 2018. Here, we take a look at their journey so far (Road to Quarterfinals) in the tournament.

France’s Road to Quarterfinals of FIFA World Cup 2018:

It was Kylian Mbappe’s brace and a goal each from Antoine Griezmann and Benjamin Pavard that saw France beat Argentina by 4-3 in their pre-quarterfinal match against Argentina. The game saw both the teams fighting tooth and nail to secure a spot in the quarterfinals; however, the Argentinian defence was too weak to contain France’s four-pronged attack.

Group C Match: June 16, 2018: France vs Australia (2-1)

Group C Match: June 21, 2018: France vs Peru (1-0)

Group C Match: June 26, 2018: France vs Denmark (0-0)

Round of 16 Match: June 30, 2018: France vs Argentina (4-3)

France will be playing against Uruguay in the first quarterfinal of FIFA World Cup. The match will be played on July 6, starting at 7.30 pm (IST).

Uruguay’s Road to Quarterfinals of FIFA World Cup 2018:

It was Edinson Cavani’s double goals that saw Uruguay overcome a robust Portuguese challenge in their pre-quarterfinal clash. After Cavani’s brilliant header gave them the lead in the 7th minute, it was Pepe’s equally stunning header that equalised the scoreline in the 55th minute. However, it was a stupendous goal from Cavani, again, in the 62nd minute which saw his side advance into the Last Eight!

Group A Match: June 15, 2018: Uruguay vs Egypt (1-0)

Group A Match: June 20, 2018: Uruguay vs Saudi Arabia (1-0)

Group A Match: June 25, 2018: Uruguay vs Russia (3-0)

Round of 16 Match: June 30, 2018: Uruguay vs Portugal (2-1)

Uruguay will lock horns against France in their quarterfinal tie. The clash between the two sides will take place on June 30, with the match scheduled to begin at 7.30 pm on July 6.

Brazil’s Road to Quarterfinals of FIFA World Cup 2018:

A spirited performance from Neymar saw Brazil go past the Mexican challenge in their pre-quarterfinal match against Mexico on Monday. A goal each by Neymar Jr and Firminho ensured that Brazil beat Mexico 2-0 in the spectacular game.

Group E Match: June 17, 2018: Brazil vs Switzerland (1-1)

Group E Match: June 22, 2018: Brazil vs Costa Rica (2-0)

Round of 16 Match: July 2, 2018: Brazil vs Mexico (2-0)

Five-time World Champions Brazil will be playing their next match against Belgium. The quarterfinal match between Brazil and Belgium will be played on July 6, starting at 11.30 pm (IST).

Belgium’s Road to Quarterfinals of FIFA World Cup 2018:

It was nothing more than a heartbreak for Japan who was 0-2 ahead in the match initially. However, it was brilliance from the Belgium side that saw them emerge victorious, with their third goal being scored in the last minute of the match. Belgium advances in the quarterfinal with a 3-2 win over Japan.

June 18, 2018: Belgium vs Panama (3-0)

June 23, 2018: Belgium vs Tunisia (5-2)

June 27, 2018: England vs Belgium (0-1)

Round of 16 Match: Belgium vs Japan (3-2)

Belgium will be contesting against Brazil in their quarterfinal line-up on Friday. The match will take place on July 6, starting at 11.30 pm (IST).

Sweden’s Road to Quarterfinals of FIFA World Cup 2018:

The match was evenly poised between Sweden and Switzerland as a goal from Emil Forsberg in the 66th minute became the deciding factor between the two sides. It was Sweden who eventually went on to win the match and advance into the quarterfinals.

Group F Match: June 18, 2018: Sweden vs South Korea (1-0)

Group F Match: June 23, 2018: Germany vs Sweden (2-1)

Sweden will clash against England in their quarterfinal match at FIFA World Cup 2018. The match will be played on July 7, starting at 7.30 pm (IST).

England’s Road to Quarterfinals of FIFA World Cup 2018:

Colombia scored a last-minute goal to ensure that the match goes into the extra time after Harry Kane’s goal had put England in the driver’s seat in the 57th minute. The extra time yielded no result as both the team then competed in the penalty shootout. England held their nerves as they went on to win the match by 4-3 on penalties score.

Group G Match: June 18, 2018: Tunisia vs England (1-2)

Group G Match: June 24, 2018: England vs Panama (6-1)

Round of 16 Match: July 3, 2018: England vs Colombia (1-1); (4-3) penalties

England will be competing against Sweden in their quarterfinal match. The match will take place on July 7, starting at 7.30 pm (IST).

Russia’s Road to Quarterfinals of FIFA World Cup 2018:

Russia caused one of the most significant shock exits of FIFA World Cup 2018 as they knocked out Spain out of the tournament. After conceding an own goal in the first half of the match, it was Artem Dzyuba’s goal that saved Russia in the night. The penalty shootout later saw the Russian team defeating Spain 4-3 on penalties score, eventually.

June 14, 2018: Russia vs Saudi Arabia (5-0)

Russia will play against Croatia in the fourth quarterfinal at the FIFA World Cup 2018. The last match in the Round of 8 will see the game start at 11.30 pm (IST).

Croatia’s Road to Quarterfinals of FIFA World Cup 2018:

Croatia nearly booked their ticket to quarterfinals when they were awarded a penalty kick in the 116th minute of the extra time. However, Croatia Captain Luka Modric missed that penalty shot and the match saw a penalty shootout take place. Croatia won the match 3-2 on penalties, eventually.

Croatia will be playing their quarterfinal match against Russia on July 7. The game will begin at 11.30 pm (IST).
