The local football match was being played between Juventud Bellavista and Familia Chocca at approximately 04:00 PM local time under very dangerous weather. Videos of the incident in which the lightning struck in the middle of the ground had sent many players down. Many users on social media were surprised by the fact that why the match was being allowed to commence under such dangerous weather conditions. As the players were leaving the field, lightning hit the field minutes after the referee had stopped the match. While the players who were wounded were sent to the hospital, de la Cruz was declared dead upon his arrival at the hospital.
