Chris Smalling will join AS Roma on a season-long loan deal from Manchester United after both clubs agreed on a €3m transfer-fee, which will take the England International to Italy for the rest of 2019-20 Serie A season. The season-long loan deal for Smalling, however, does not involve any option to buy. The 32-year-old defender was reportedly keen to make a move after falling down the pecking order at United following the arrival of Harry Maguire. The 32-year-old centre-back, who remains one of the few players at United to have played under Sir Alex Ferguson, has a contract with the Red Devils till 2022 with an option to extend it for a further year but is preferred behind the Lindelof-Maguire duo and 21-year-old Axel Tuanzebe, by Solskjaer. Ole Gunnar had already made it clear that there are too many defenders at his disposal at United and he is willing to offload some of them before the summer transfer window shuts down.
