Just after hours of Argentina crashing out of the 2018 FIFA World Cup, came yet another shocking result. Last night, in a dramatic finish Portugal bowed out to Uruguay by 1-2 at the 2018 FIFA World Cup. This obviously left Cristiano Ronaldo heartbroken as this could possibly be his last World Cup. It was the Paris Saint Germain striker Edinson Cavani who fired two goals pushing Uruguay into the last 8 of the World Cup in Russia. Cavani and Luis Suarez jointly put up a great show putting Portugal at the back seat. It was quite clear that Uruguay boss, Oscar Tabarez had planned his strategies quite well. Despite the loss, Ronaldo managed to win hearts.
Cavani who was injured during the game was substituted in the next half. The PSG striker was limping and it was Ronaldo who walked to Cavani and walked him off the field. The gesture invited a thunderous applause from jam-packed stands. Check out the video below:
The fans hailed his actions even on social media. Here are a few tweets below:
“The most beautiful view in the Russian world cup... ♥️ @Cristiano @ECavaniOfficial #WorldCup #WorldCup2018 #POR #URU #URUPOR #ronaldo #Cr7 #Cavani #Cristiano,” read a tweet.
Another netizen wrote, “Respect.”
After the match, Portugal coach Fernando Santos couldn’t come to terms with the result. “It's not a fair result, we did enough for another result. Uruguay scored with their first shot on our goal. We are very sad but that's football," he said while addressing the press.
