Divya Kakran Wins Bronze Medal in Women's Freestyle 68kg Wrestling Event for India in CWG 2018
The other medal winners in Indian wrestling are Babita Kumar Phogat winning silver medal in Women's Freestyle 53 kg Nordic System Match. Kiran winning bronze medal in Women's Freestyle 76 kg match, Rahul Aware winning the gold medal in Men's Freestyle 57 kg and Sushil Kumar in Men's Freestyle 74 kg.
India wins their seven medal in wrestling after Divya Kakran clinched bronze medal in Women’s Freestyle 68kg match on day ten of Commonwealth Games 2018. The 19-year-old defeated Sherin Sultana based on victory by fall results to take India’s medal tally to 38. India’s medal count in CWG 2018 included 17 gold, 9 silver and 12 bronze as they continue to be placed on third position on the medal table. Australia and England are away ahead of others capturing the top spots of GC 2018 team standings.
In her first Commonwealth appearance, teenaged wrestler Divya Kakran made it count by winning a bronze medal for India. She had used all her confidence and experience after winning medals at the Asian and Commonwealth Wrestling Championships previous year. She began her Gold Coast 2018 journey by defeating Alakame Anzong of Cameroon in her first match. However, she fell against Canada’s Danielle Lappage. In the semi-finals she lost to a much-experienced Nigeria’s Blessing Oborududu on technical superiority after which Divya was left to contest in bronze-medal playoff where she defeated Sherin Sultana of Bangladesh to finally bag a bronze medal for herself and India.
Earlier, Pooja Dhanda lost to Odunayo Adekuoroye of Nigeria in the Women's Freestyle 57 kg finals. Nevertheless, she claimed the silver medal to add to India’s medal count. The biggest highlight of the day in Indian wrestling at Gold Coast was the win of Bajrang Punia. The 24-year-old demolished his opponent from Wales, Kane Charig to claim Men's Freestyle 65 kg gold medal.
