No sooner the hooter buzzed, Indian men’s hockey team at the Commonwealth Games 2018 hung low as they started they threw away their lead by 0-2 and finished with a draw against their arch-rivals Pakistan. India who was in the commanding position in the first half of the game couldn’t score a single goal later.
This allowed Pakistan to make a comeback in the game. Harmanpreet Singh and Dilpreet Singh scored for India. With only seven seconds to go, Pakistan won a penalty corner and the Indians went for a review. The penalty was clearly saved by the Indians, but the video official felt that it had hit a foot to force another penalty corner. It was then Ali Mubashar who scored a goal for Pakistan leaving the Indians shell-shocked. Indian coach Sjoerd Marijne expressed his displeasure to the official but thing couldn’t be undone.
Post the match, Sjoerd Marijne told the section of Indian media, “This wasn't the team I've coached for 5 months. Players are more disappointed than me.” Whereas Roelant Oltmans, Pakistan coach felt that the team had improved. He said, “You’ve seen in the past that Pakistan lose their heads when down. We saw that at World Hockey League when I was India coach. There's improvement now.”
However, Indian weightlifters had a good day at the office as Sathish Sivalingam won gold medal in men’s 77-kg category in Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games.
