Zimbabwe Cricket Board Expresses Interest in Hosting Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 Following Political Unrest in Bangladesh and India's Refusal to Host Tournament: Report
Due to the political unrest in Bangladesh, Zimbabwe has now emerged as another potential candidate to host the Women's T20 World Cup 2024 after UAE.
With BCCI refusing to host the Women's T20 World Cup 2024 there are still dark clouds on the host of the major ICC tournament. Bangladesh who are the desired hosts of the tournament may lose the rights due to the political unrest in the country. As per BCCI secretary Jay Shah, ICC had requested BCCI to host the Women's T20 World Cup 2024 but he refused due to the monsoon and the upcoming Women's ODI World Cup. UAE had emerged as another possible venue for the tournament as it has hosted the Men's T20 World Cup 2021 in place of India. The ICC is yet to give a confirmation regarding the same. As per a report by ESPNcricinfo, Zimbabwe has showcased their interest in hosting the tournament. Zimbabwe's interest comes up after their successful conduct of the two World Cup qualifiers in 2018 and 2023. Zimbabwe last hosted a World Cup back in 2003. Zimbabwe have kept itself isolated from the major cricket world events which include the regime of Robert Mugabe, which experienced hyperinflation in the country. Zimbabwe has not qualified for two of the last three ICC T2O World Cups whereas it also didn't feature in the 2019 and 2023 ODI World Cups as well. Zimbabwe will be co-hosting the ICC U19 World Cup 2026 along with Namibia and Kenya whereas it is also the joint host of the 2027 ODI World Cup along with South Africa and Namibia. The Zimbabwean team has performed well on the world stage in recent times and if they get the hosting rights of the women's T20 World Cup, this will certainly play a crucial role in uplifting their cricket.
