India's tour of Sri Lanka continues to produce some thrilling matches and this time, it is the first ODI which, on the back of a sensational bowling performance, has finished in a tie. Needing 231 runs to win, India got off to a great start with Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill scoring 75 runs for the opening wicket. The match seemed it would go India's way but Sri Lanka had other ideas in mind. The Sri Lankan bowlers turned up and took wickets at regular intervals. India's only other partnership of note was a 57-run stand between KL Rahul and Axar Patel. In the end, Charith Asalanka took a smart review in the end with one needed for India to win. And Asalanka, on the next ball, dismissed Arshdeep Singh, trapping him lbw as he went for a wild slog. India vs Sri Lanka 1st ODI 2024 Ends in Thrilling Tie After Charith Asalanka Leads Hosts’ Inspiring Bowling Effort in Series Opener.

This is just the second time in ODIs that an India vs Sri Lanka match has been tied, the last one being way back in 2012. However, this is also not the first time that the scores of both teams have been level after the end of the stipulated overs. The India vs Sri Lanka 3rd T20I, which was played in Pallekele on July 30, too, was tied, and later, India went on to win the match via Super Over. So why was there no Super Over this time around? Fans Chant ‘Kohli Ko Bowling Do’ During IND vs SL 1st ODI 2024 at Colombo’s R Premadasa Stadium, Video Goes Viral.

Why There Was No Super Over in India vs Sri Lanka 1st ODI 2024 Despite Tied Match?

The India vs Sri Lanka 1st ODI 2024 did not have a Super Over despite there being a tie with both teams scoring the same number of runs. This is because there are no Super Overs in One-Day Internationals. The concept of the 'Super Over', also known as the 'One-Over Eliminator' is exclusively used only in T20Is, the shortest version of the game and there's no provision for the same in the fifty-over format. Hence there was no Super Over in this match despite both teams scoring 230 runs in the end.

Though the match ended in a tie, it was a moral victory for Sri Lanka, who were behind the game after India's quickfire opening partnership. They would take a lot of momentum from this match and especially the bowling effort by the spinners in the two remaining matches of the series.
