Why Gautam Gambhir Will Have To Leave KKR Mentor Role If He Is Appointed Indian Men's Cricket Team's Head Coach?

Gautam Gambhir's appointment as India men's national cricket team head coach looks imminent with several reports stating that an official announcement is the only thing that is pending in this development. The former Indian cricketer is known for wearing his heart on his sleeve and his tactical genius was seen at work when he mentored Kolkata Knight Riders to a third IPL title not many days ago. Since the application for India head coach was made public by the BCCI, Gambhir has been tipped to take over the role from Rahul Dravid, who is unlikely to re-apply for the job as his tenure ends with the completion of the ICC T20 World Cup 2024. Gautam Gambhir Makes Big Revelation On Taking Up Team India Head Coach Role, Says 'I Would Love to....There's No Bigger Honour' (Watch Video).

After Dravid, many had tipped VVS Laxman to take over the role, given the fact that he has stepped up every time on certain occasions. It has not been confirmed, though, if Gambhir has applied for the role of India's head coach, but ESPNCricinfo reports that the 42-year-old was contacted by the BCCI to take up the job. Sourav Ganguly Feels KKR Mentor Gautam Gambhir Will Be a 'Good' Head Coach for Team India If He Has Applied for the Role.

Why Will Gautam Gambhir Have to Leave KKR Mentor Role If Named India Head Coach?

While Gambhir's appointment as India head coach would signal the start of a new chapter in Indian cricket, he would have to relinquish his role as mentor of the Kolkata Knight Riders. Gambhir made a return to KKR prior to the IPL 2024 season and made an instant impact with the Shreyas Iyer-led outfit winning the tournament and doing so in dominant fashion. But Gambhir won't be able to continue as KKR mentor if appointed Indian national cricket team head coach because the conflict of interest rules of the BCCI will not permit him to take up multiple roles. The former cricketer has mentored Lucknow Super Giants (2022, 2023) and Kolkata Knight Riders (2024) and has managed to reach the playoffs each time. He does not have the experience of coaching any team though and it will be his first such stint if he ends up getting picked for the role.
