Virat Kohli remained six runs shy of his seventh double hundred as India, for the second successive time as many Test matches, continued to bat South Africa out of the game – and perhaps out of the series – with another gigantic score on board. At Tea on Day 2 of the second Test, India were comfortably placed at 473/4 with Kohli batting on 194 and Jadeja looking good for a 12th half-century. South Africa had their moments with Keshav Maharaj having Ajinkya Rahane caught by the wicket-keeper and getting few edges of both Kohli and Jadeja, but to no avail. Six runs will, however, not just help the Indian skipper complete a record-breaking seventh double hundred in Test cricket – and equal Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag for most double hundreds by an Indian – but also take him past the 7000 runs barrier. He’s already beaten Don Bradman for most double hundreds as a captain and with six runs more he could also overtake the Don and complete 7000 Test runs. Bradman finished his career with 6996 runs.
For a brief period, Maharaj could have dismissed Kohli thrice in the space of two overs but all three edges towards the first slip, where South Africa captain Faf du Plessis was stationed, escaped to the right of the skipper, once even underneath his stretched right hand. The Proteas have now spent 340 overs in the field – spanning two Test matches – 140 of which have come in this game overseeing two days. But have enjoyed little success. Like the first two days, Proteas’ fast bowling duo of Kagiso Rabada and Vernon Philander kept the Kohli-Rahane duo quiet but only for the first session.
Post lunch and between Tea, Kohli scored 90 runs and dealt more in boundaries in between stealing a couple of twos and singles. The only success for South Africa in the third session came in the fifth over of the session bowled by Maharaj when Rahane edged one to Quinton de Kock after scoring 59 from 168 deliveries and sharing a 174-run stand with captain Kohli.
