After being continuously ignored for a place in India’s World Cup squad, middle-order batsman Ambati Rayudu announced his retirement from international cricket. Rayudu was not picked in the initial squad for the World Cup as selectors went with all-rounder Vijay Shankar. Team India then suffered a blow with opener Shikhar Dhawan out of the tournament but it was Rishabh Pant who was added to the squad. Recently, Shankar was ruled out of the CWC 2019 due to a foot injury but selectors once again ignored Rayudu despite being in the list ion standby players and added Mayank Agarwal to the squad.
After back to back snubs, Rayudu decided to hang his boots. And it was the Hyderabad Cricket Association that made an announcement on behalf of the batsman. "This is to inform that Ambati Rayudu, Hyderabad captain and member of the India ODI team, has decided to retire from the longer version of the game including Ranji Trophy (multi-day) to focus on limited overs cricket and T20 cricket," Hyderabad Cricket Association (HCA) had stated. Interestingly, last year Kohli after a win against West Indies backed Rayudu to bat at number four in the World Cup 2019. "Rayudu has taken his chance with both hands. We need to back him till the 2019 WC (World Cup). He reads the game well, so we are happy that someone intelligent is batting at number four," Kohli was quoted as saying by IANS back then.
Rayudu has represented India in 55 ODIs and has scored 1694 runs, including three centuries and ten half-centuries. He averaged 47.05 in his ODI career. Apart from it, the 33-year-old played six T20Is for India. Unfortunately, Rayudu never got an opportunity to make his Test debut for the country.
