Vijay Shankar, who was controversially selected in the 15-member ICC World Cup 2019 squad, failed to repay the faith shown in him after managing to go score just two runs from seven deliveries. The 28-year-old was selected for the World Cup ahead of Ambati Rayudu owing to his all-around abilities. He was selected to play the No.4 role for India. The Indian cricket team’s chief selector, MS Prasad even on record to say that Shankar was a three-dimensional player and could also offer a bowling option, other than batting and fielding.

Shankar arrived at the crease with India reeling at 83/3. Both the openers Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan along with skipper Virat Kohli were back at the pavilion. The match presented Shankar with a golden opportunity to seal his place in the playing XI with a big score against Bangladesh. But the Tamil Nadu player failed to take stock of the opportunity and departed after playing only seven deliveries for two runs. He was caught by wicket-keeper Mushfiqur Rahim off the bowling of Rubel Hossain in the 22nd over.

The all-rounder, who successfully defended 11 runs in the final over against Australia during the second ODI in Vidarbha, Gujarat, missed out the opening warm-up fixture against New Zealand with an injury. India went on to lose that match by six wickets. Shankar had also struggled at the 2019 Indian Premier League (2019) for the Sunrisers Hyderabad.
