Bangladesh Women’s Cricket team on Sunday created history by winning their maiden Asia Cup title. Up against record six-time champion India, Bangladesh held onto their nerves to clinch the trophy in closely fought contest at the Kinrara Academy Oval. Bangladesh after restricting India to 112, chased the target in 20 overs with three wickets in hand. The match went down to the last ball with Bangladesh needing two off it. Jahanara Alam collected two runs off Indian captain Harmanpreet Kaur, who bowled the last over. This is the first instance of a team other India winning the Women’s Asia Cup since its inception.
Once Jahanara hit the winning runs, the celebrations began in Bangladesh dug out. Not only there, but men’s cricket team of Bangladesh were also keenly following the contest and once women’s team registered to win, the boys were seen dancing in a dressing room. Meanwhile, this was Bangladesh’s only second win over India in women’s cricket. Earlier, this week, Bangladesh in a round-robin stage defeated the Harmanpreet Kaur-led side by seven wickets.
Bangladesh have been in great form in the tournament. They made it to the finals after defeating Malaysia. The Salma Khatun-led side lost their opening match against Sri Lanka but then defeated India, Pakistan, and Thailand.
