The first T20I between India and Sri Lanka at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati was abandoned due to the wet pitch. The match was called off without a ball being bowled. India won the toss and opted to bowl first, but soon the heavens opened up. The rains resulted in the delay of the start of the match. However, once the rain cleared, the groundsmen removed covers. After the rain fully cleared, the groundsmen got back to work. While super soppers were busy drying up the outfield, the ground staff used bizarre techniques to dry the pitch area. The groundsmen used vacuum cleaners, hair dryer and even an iron to dry up the pitch.
As the images of the ground staff at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium using hair dryer and iron were beamed on TV sets, the social media users were quick to take a dig at the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and Assam Cricket Association officials. The series opener would have been the comeback game for Shikhar Dhawan and Jasprit Bumrah, but rains ruined the occasion. The teams will now travel to Indore for the second T20I on Tuesday, January 07, 2020. Sri Lankan team is in India for a short T20I series. With the first T20I abandoned, the series now becomes a two-match affair.
