History was made in the game of Cricket, on December 19, after the traditional coin-toss was done away with during the Big Bash League (BBL) match between Brisbane Heat and Adelaide Strikers. Instead, a cricket bat was flipped to determine the winner! Who’d have thought that one day the method that children used in their backyard, would take centre stage in international cricket! It was for the first time in Cricket history that a bat was used to determine who won the toss instead of the traditional coin method. It was Adelaide Strikers’ captain Colin Ingram called ‘roofs’ and won the historic toss in the middle.
Not to forget, it was Matthew Hayden who flipped the bat (and not the coin), and turned another page in the ever-evolving game of Cricket! Big Bash League 2018–19: Coin Toss to Be Replaced by ‘Bat’, Will Ask ‘Hills or Flat’ Instead of Heads or Tails.

Adelaide Strikers won the toss and decided to bowl. Brisbane Heat wickets fell at regular intervals, which saw the side folding for an under-par score of 146 runs in 19.4 overs. Chris Lynn top scored in their innings, as the Heat’s captain scored 33 runs off 20 balls, in which he hit four fours, and two sixes!
In their reply, Alex Carey dropped anchor at one end, while batsmen at the other hand contributed in useful numbers, which saw them win the match by five wickets. Carey scored 70 runs off 46 balls, where he hit five fours, and four sixes.
With all said and done, it was interesting to see Cricket breaking away and adopting an exciting change. How much of a success the method becomes is for time to tell; however, it was exciting to see a bat being flipped to determine the winner of the toss!
