Former Sri Lankan cricketer Mahela Jayawardene is likely to apply as next head coach of Team India. BCCI has extended the contract of current head coach Ravi Shastri till India’s tour of West Indies 2019, but has also invited applications for the next head coach. Amid the process, a report by Financial Express claimed that former Sri Lanka’s skipper has also applied for the post. The current staff will also have to go through the process to get selected again. Finally, the Cricket Advisory Committee led by Former Indian cricketer Kapil Dev will take the final decision. Jayawardene has a great record as a coach. The former left-handed batsman is also the coach of Mumbai Indians, the most successful franchise in Indian Premier Leagues. Mumbai Indians have clinched the trophy maximum four times. Under Jayawardene, Mumbai Indians have bagged two IPL titles in three editions. Jayawardene has previously held the position of consultant coach for England for a brief period. He was signed as batting consultant for England team in August 2015 and was leading the team till World Twenty20 in India in 2016. In 2017, he was appointed as Mumbai Indians’ coach replacing Ricky Ponting. He was also appointed as Bangladesh Premier League team Khulna Titans in May 2017 for a two-year contract.
Other than Jayawardene, Gary Kirsten, Tom Moody and Virender Sehwag are some of the other applicants to apply for the post of Team India's head coach. According to BCCI’s terms and conditions for Team India new head coach, the candidate should have played a minimum of 30 test matches and 50 ODIs. He should be below 60 years of age.
