Hosts England are being billed as one of the favourites for the 2019 World Cup and there is a lot of buzz surrounding the Three Lions. Currently ranked no 1 in the fifty over format, the Eoin Morgan-led team has been going from strength to strength. A 4-0 win over Pakistan just prior to the premier competition must have filled them with great confidence. Although they have never lifted the World Cup with a semi-final appearance in 1987 the closest they have come, 2019 could very well be their year. The presence of a well-balanced team is crucial for a winning team and England have one at the moment. We take a look at the 15 man England squad for the World Cup. Eoin Morgan: The leader of the team and a fine middle-order batsman, Eoin Morgan has the task of steering England to the championship. He has been with the team for long and knows all about the strengths and weaknesses. In terms of batting, he can be very destructive if the situation arises and also build partnerships with ease.
Moeen Ali: He was Virat Kohli’s go-to guy in the recently concluded Indian Premier League where he shone with both bat and bowl. In England too, his role is clear as that of a pinch hitter and useful spinner in the middle overs. He can get those odd wickets to turn the game in England’s favour.
Joe Root: One of the best in the World and certainly England’s best batsman, Joe Root in full flow is a great sight for any cricket fan. He will be under a lot of pressure to deliver but Root has shown in the past he can score those big runs when it matters. Jason Roy: English opener Jason Roy has been getting his team off to good starts with some aggressive hitting in the powerplays. His wicket is of great importance to the opposition as Roy has the capability to run away with the game with his exploits up top.
Jonny Bairstow: Wicketkeeper batsman Jonny Bairstow had a gala time in India playing for the Sunrisers Hyderabad. He has really come of age with his batting as he does not throw away his wicket, unlike his initial days. He can be a floater in the team which gives England the edge.
Jos Butler: Jose Butler is one reason the England fans are dreaming of a world cup triumph. The right-handed batsman can hurt the opposition with his big hitting which we have been seeing consistently for a few years now.
Tom Curran: He has the potential to be a top all-rounder in the team with his crucial cameos coming in late down the order. Also, a very fine bowler in the ODI format who can keep the opposition batsmen under check. ICC Cricket World Cup 2019: Jofra Archer, Jos Buttler and Other Key Players in the England Team for CWC.
Adil Rashid: Adil Rashid has been the team’s leading spinner for quite some time now and his wickets in the middle over will be key for the Three Lions.
Ben Stokes: On his day, he can run away with the game in a flash but needs to be more consistent with both bat and bowl. He would be the first name on the list in England’s playing eleven throughout the campaign.
Chris Woakes: A very disciplined fast bowler whose line and length rarely go astray, Chris Woakes will enjoy bowling in English conditions particularly with the new bowl.
Mark Wood: May struggle to get a game with the emergence of Jofra Archer but nevertheless is a very good backup option to have.
Jofra Archer: Jofra Archer has earned his place in the World Cup squad with some very consistent performance in both domestic and cash-rich leagues around the world. His death over bowling is a real bonus for the team.
James Vince: Hampshire skipper James Vince has been in excellent form with the bat in domestic cricket which has earned him an England call up. He could be drafted in the middle order but completion for places remains high. Ahead of ICC Cricket World Cup 2019, Here’s a Look Back at How England Fared at the Last Edition of the CWC.
Liam Dawson: Liam Dawson picked up 18 wickets for Hampshire this season along with an average of 45 with the bat. May struggle to fit in the team but a very good backup all-rounder.
Liam Plunkett: Liam Plunkett has been a revelation in his second stint with the national team where he has picked up wickets and also contributed with the bat lower down the order. At 34, he has the experience needed to perform in such a big stage.
