Steve Smith came on to bat after the top order was collapsed and tried to steady the ship. The wickets continued to tumble at the other end but the former skipper stood up and scored a gritty ton. The right-handed-batsman was playing with caution against the swinging deliveries of Stuart Broad and Chris Woakes and just when he got settled at 34 the veteran got adjudged out wrongly by the umpire and it certainly annoyed the former. The day one of the first Test match saw the return of the banned trio of Steve Smith, David Warner, and Cameron Bancroft. Warner and Bancroft didn’t trouble the bowlers much and were dismissed cheaply. However, Smith went on to play what could be the match-defining innings and guided Australia to a total of 284 runs in the first innings. For England, Stuart Broad proved to be a standout performer as the right-arm-quick picked five Aussie wickets.
