Steve Smith, who was handed a one-year ban by Cricket Australia (CA) following his involvement in the ball-tampering scandal, was on Wednesday booed at the Johannesburg airport as he left South Africa. The former Australian captain went through an embarrassing situation as he was booed by the crowd present at the airport. People shouted “Cheat” as Smith was escorted by the police. Media was also present and asked Smith many questions, but he didn’t respond to any query.

Smith along with David Warner and Cameron Bancroft were found involved in the ball-tampering scandal. During day three’s play, Bancroft was caught on camera tampering with the ball. Later in the press conference, Smith and Bancroft accepted to have fiddled with the ball in a decision taken by the ‘team leadership”.

While ICC banned Smith for one match and fined him 100 per cent match fee, Bancroft was fined 75 per cent of his match fee. CA, however, promised to take significant action against the players involved and subsequently handed one-year ban to Smith and Warner. Bancroft was banned for nine months.

Following CA’s decision to ban Smith and Warner, BCCI also barred the duo from taking part in this year’s Indian Premier League (IPL). Smith and Warner were part of Rajasthan Royals and Sunrisers Hyderabad respectively. Royals eventually named Ajinkya Rahane as their captain while Sunrisers named handed the captaincy to Kane Williamson.
