Amidst Arjun Ranatunga’s claims of corruption in the Sri Lankan board, the team stepped to play their first test match against West Indies at the Port of Spain. The hosts won the toss and elected to bat. The 40-year old Rangana Herath in this match surpassed the record of Wasim Akram with the wicket of West Indies’ Roston Chase. The Sri Lankan left-arm spinner has scalped 415 Wickets in 89 Matches. Whereas Wasim Akram has 414 wickets in 104 matches.

Talking about the match between the two teams, the Day 1 witnessed the West Indies openers making their way to the pavilion in the first 12 overs of the match. At the end of the day’s play, West Indies made 246 runs by losing 6 wickets in 84 overs. It was the 90-run partnership between Shane Dowrich and Jason Holder for the 6th wicket that saved the team. With Dowrich still fighting for the team on 46, Devendra Bishoo will have to hold his nerves to put West Indies past 300 run mark. For Sri Lanka, it was Lahiru Kumara who clinched three important wickets of Kieran Powell (38), Shai Hope (44) and Jason Holder (40).

After winning the toss, West Indies captain Jason Holder said, "Hopefully the pitch stays true. Last year was good for us, hopefully, we can continue to do well. Looking forward to it. Hetmyer and Hamilton miss out. Smith has done well in first-class cricket leading up to here and I wish him well."
