Shubman Gill's return to Team India in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 might be further delayed. The star opener, who missed India's first match of the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2023 against Australia, is still continuing his recovery from dengue. Gill has been one of India's standout performers in ODIs this year and his participation in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 match against Pakistan also looks uncertain with the latest update being that of him getting admitted to a hospital in Chennai. Gill was in Chennai as India played Australia on October 8 but did not travel with the team to Delhi, where the Men in Blue will face Afghanistan on October 11. Shubman Gill Set to Miss India vs Afghanistan ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 Match, Indian Opener to Stay Back In Chennai For Medical Supervision.

According to a report in Cricbuzz, the 24-year-old was admitted to the Kauvery Hospital in Chennai on October 9. The right-hander, as was confirmed by the BCCI in an official statement, would be under the supervision of the medical team and the report states that his platelet count is low, which disallowed him from flying with the rest of his team members to Delhi ahead of the Afghanistan match. The world no 2 ODI batter is also doubtful for India's high-octane match against Pakistan on October 14, which will be played at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. Gill has played many memorable knocks at that stadium and fans would sincerely hope that he recovers in time to feature in this match.  ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 Points Table Updated.

In Gill's absence, Ishan Kishan opened the innings against Australia alongside captain Rohit Sharma. The move did not work out as the young left-hander was out for a first-ball duck as he slashed at a delivery which caught the edge of his bat and flew to the slips where Cameron Green took a simple catch. Despite that failure, Kishan looks set to retain his spot in India's playing XI against Afghanistan on October 11 and should Gill miss out on the Pakistan game, Kishan can be in for an extended run.
