Shreyas Iyer Reportedly Unlikely To Be Retained By Kolkata Knight Riders; IPL Governing Council Brings New Changes to Retention Rules
IPL-winning captain Shreyas Iyer could end his association with Kolkata Knight Riders after the IPL Governing Council made changes in retention rules. Iyer joined KKR in 2022 for INR 12.25 Crore.
With the deadline for retentions approaching, all franchises are having last-minute strategy talks, where reports suggest that Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Shreyas Iyer might part ways. Iyer, who led KKR to their third IPL title win in the 2024 edition, is keen to head into the auction rather than get retained by the management. KKR Likely To Have Andre Russell As First Retention Ahead Of IPL 2025 Mega Auction, Captain Shreyas Iyer's Future Uncertain
This comes after the IPL Governing Council made minor changes in retention rules as per a report in Sportstar, which stated that the amount exceeding or equal to the designated price (higher of the two), will be deducted from the auction purse.
This change in ruling, coupled with the Right to Match (RTM) card, has seen a rise in cricketers willing to enter the auction rather than get retained, which Iyer has shown his willingness. Interestingly, KKR are set to pick all-rounder Andre Russell as their first retention, which meant captain Iyer's future with the franchise was already uncertain.
