India vs West Indies Highlights And Cricket Score 1st Match - ODI Commentary
Now, what can we expect in the second innings? It is a stiff target for the Calypso Kings and it will be difficult for them to chase this down, especially given the slowness of the pitch. Will they chase this down or will the Men in Blue bag a victory? Join us in a while to find out.
Coming to the West Indian bowlers, they were disciplined throughout except the spinners. Cottrell, Joseph and Keemo Paul were the pick of the bowlers as they picked up two wickets each. The spinners, Hayden Walsh and Roston Chase were disappointing. It was expected that they will have a major impact on this game but it was the pacers who did all the damage. The last few overs were good for the visitors and they will be reasonably happy going into the break.
Sanjay Manjrekar is down for an interview with Shreyas Iyer. On being asked about his 4th consecutive fifty in ODIs, Iyer says that it is a good achievement for him. Further adds that when the offie (Roston Chase) came in, Iyer thought that he will target Chase but with the team in a bit of trouble he took some time before going for the big hits. On his relationship with Pant, Iyer says that there's always been a good chemistry between him and Pant and everyone knows he has potential. Mentions how Pant took some time to adjust to the pitch but then played some very good shots. On being asked about the pitch, Iyer says that as the game goes on, the ball should start to spin but also with the dew coming in no one knows what to expect.
The hosts started poorly losing KL Rahul and Virat Kohli in the same over but then Rohit and Iyer stitched a good partnership of just over 50 runs before Sharma threw his wicket away. Then came the match-defining stand, a 114-run partnership between Iyer and Pant which took India to a launchpad from where they could lift-off. However, Iyer fell for 70 and then Pant soon followed after scoring his first ODI fifty. That broke the momentum and it then looked like India will not be able to reach a good total but Kedar Jadhav's cameo helped India reach a total close to 300. The last five overs though yielded only 38 runs. That will make the visitors happy as they restricted the hosts to below 300.
India finish with a competitive score after the end of the 50 overs and they will be having mixed emotions in the dressing room after looking at that score. However, on a track where the average score is 260-270, they should be happy with that.
Keemo Paul to Deepak Chahar. Full delivery outside off, Chahar drives it to cover and picks up a single. INDIA FINISH ON 287/8.

A yorker on middle and leg, Jadeja jams it out towards silly mid off and takes off for a run. Roston Chase runs in to get the ball, collects it and hits at the non-striker's end. A mild appeal follows but nothing much follows after that as the bowler gets ready to bowl his next ball. In the meantime, the replays are showed on the big screen which show that Jadeja was in fact out of his crease when the ball hit the stumps. On watching that, the West Indies insist on taking it upstairs. After a long, long time, the umpire obliges and the inevitable follows as the third umpire adjudges Jadeja run out. He walks back but he is not happy at all. Neither is Indian skipper Virat Kohli who almost walks onto the field following the who mishap. This will surely be a talked-about moment in days to come.
What happened there? The onfield umpire has gone to the third umpire for a run out after being asked by the West Indian players. At first the West Indies players were not interested much but after seeing the on-screen replays they have asked the onfield umpire to go to the third umpire.

India (Playing XI) - Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul, Virat Kohli (C), Shreyas Iyer, Rishabh Pant (WK), Kedar Jadhav, Shivam Dube (DEBUT), Ravindra Jadeja, Mohammed Shami, Deepak Chahar and Kuldeep Yadav.
West Indies (Playing XI) - Shai Hope (WK), Sunil Ambris, Shimron Hetmyer, Nicholas Pooran, Roston Chase, Kieron Pollard (C), Jason Holder, Hayden Walsh, Alzarri Joseph, Sheldon Cottrell and Keemo Paul.
Virat Kohli, the Indian skipper, says that he is very happy with the outcome of the toss because he wanted to bat first anyway. Mentions how the pitch is dry and it can slow down as the game goes on. Says that he is surprised by his counterpart's decision to bowl first. Adds they wanted to bat first because the longer format supports them as they cannot keep up the same high tempo going on for 50 overs. States that the West Indies are an explosive team but he backs his bowlers to keep them under check and pressurize them. Informs that Yuzvendra Chahal, Manish Pandey, Shardul Thakur and Mayank Agarwal miss out on the playing XI.
Kieron Pollard, the West Indies skipper, says that the sun is out and it will be interesting to see how the pitch reacts. Adds that they want to give a good account of themselves and they look forward to this challenge. Says that they are here to win. States that Evin Lewis is out with the knock he suffered in the last T20I and they want to give him a couple of days of extra rest. Khary Pierre, Brandon King and Romario Shephard also miss out. Adds that they are going with 2 spinners and a couple of medium pacers.
Toss - Up goes the coin and it lands in favour of the visitors. West Indies win the toss and choose to field first.
Pitch report - Sanjay Manjrekar is down with Indian legend Sunil Gavaskar for the pitch report. Manjrekar suggests that the pitch looks a little rough, not smooth and shiny. Further adds that there is not a blade of grass on the surface. Also states that in the last 7 matches the teams that have batted first has won 6 times. Mr. Gavaskar says that the pitch in Chennai was one of the fastest in his days but over the years, it has slowed down. Adds that the pitch is a bit hard and there will be good carry on offer. Adds that there is a little bit of black soil on the track and suggests that 260-270 is the average score.
2-1 was the margin by which India won the T20I series. It's now time for the ODIs. The hosts are the clear favourites to win but one should never take the Windies lightly. They have some good players in their ranks with Shai Hope and the rest being in good form. They had a great series against Afghanistan in Lucknow beating them 3-0. That series might have given them time to acclimatize to the conditions but it will be a difficult task to beat this Indian side. The Men in Blue are on top of their game and are looking really good at the moment. KL Rahul is set to open the batting along with Rohit Sharma while the middle order is pretty much settled. Deepak Chahar, after some impressive showings in the T20Is is back in the ODI squad and with Mohammed Shami, they will lead the bowling attack. There was some rain on the previous two days in Chennai but the forecast looks good for today. Will India dominate the game or will the Calypso Kings surprise one and all? Toss and team updates in a while.
That's all from this game! West Indies surprised one and all by winning this game. Nobody expected them to win but Hetmyer had other ideas. The Men in Blue would be disappointed with their performance especially their fielding and bowling. The next match takes place at Visakhapatnam on Wednesday. Join us for at 1330 Local (0800 GMT).
Shimron Hetmyer, the MAN OF THE MATCH. He says that he does not where his power comes from, to be honest. Adds that he was just looking to get it over the ropes. On him being known to play a brisk innings, Hetmyer says that he is looking to be more consistent. Adds that he was backing himself and was not looking to keep the ball down. Adds that getting and a hundred feels sweet. On being released from Bangalore in the Indian T20I league, Hetmyer says that he is not thinking about that too much.
Kieron Pollard, the West Indian skipper says that they know what talent Hetmyer possesses and he knows his responsibilites. Adds that he is playing since 18 months and that has given him experience to play in these condition. Further goes on to say they know which areas they need to work on and it has been a total teamwork. On Sheldon Cottrell, he says that with experience comes confidence and he has performed well since the last few months. On the run out, Pollard says that the right decision was made.
Virat Kohli, the Indian skipper. He says that the form of Iyer and Pant are good signs for us. Further goes on to say that, Him and Rohit failed and that gave Pant and Iyer an opportunity. Further says that they played smart cricket. Goes on to say that he felt 6 bowlers were enough but the visitors batted really fell and nothing can be taken away from them. On the run out of Jadeja, Kohli says that once the appeal is made and the onfield umpire gives it not out, nobody from outside the field can tell the umpire to go upstairs.
The West Indian bowlers were top of their game with Keemo Paul, Alzarri Joseph and Sheldon Cottrell picking up two wickets each. They used the slower deliveries to perfection in the death overs and just when India were looking to get to 300. They gave just 38 runs in their three overs. Overall they will be happy with their performance today. Stay tuned for the presentation...
Early on in the day, India were restricted to 287 after their top 3 failed to make a mark. It needed a Shreyas Iyer and Rishabh Pant special to get them to that score. A good cameo from Kedar Jadhav was also helpful. Apart from that nothing can be spoken about the batting.
Coming to the Indians bowling, they were very poor with the ball. They kept on bowling short balls and they kept on getting punished. Deepak Chahar picked up the early wicket of Sunil Ambris but what followed was carnage. The hosts bowlers had no clue to what happened and all were carted to all parts of the ground. Even the spinners were disappointing. The fielding was disappointing as they dropped a couple of chances and also a run out chance had also gone begging.
Shai Hope says that he is not smiling too much as he is cramping a bit but he is happy with the victory. States that he was looking to just play the new ball and try to bat for long periods. Adds that Hetmyer batted well and he was just anchoring the innings. Mentions the pitch was a bit of a slow turner but he adjusted his innings accordingly. Hope also says the partnership between him and Hetmyer was crucial.
Phew! What a performance from the West Indies! Especially Shimron Hetmyer. His innings was the one which actually gave the momentum to the innings. He was exceptional, terrifying and just took the game away from the Indians. The left-hander hit seven sixes in his innings and never once looked like getting out. One chance was given by him though when he hit one straight down the throat of long on but Iyer made a mess of it but by then it was too late.
