India vs West Indies Highlights And Cricket Score 1st Match - Test Commentary
Right then! 649 is India's total. Windies need to make at least 450 or play out 60-70 overs to make India bat again. Case 2 could be a possibility but even that seems like a mountain to climb. Join us back shortly...
Hard work for the bowlers. It is an understatement. Devendra Bishoo picked up 4 wickets but at the cost of 217 runs. Chase got to his century as well while Keemo Paul's injury hurt Windies badly. They were looking down and out on Thursday itself and the situation has worsened a lot.
If Day 1 did not have enough massacre, Rishabh Pant came out this morning and started hitting from the word go. But he agonizingly fell short of his ton while his captain got his. Then, when everyone felt that Jadeja was wasting time in the middle, he came out with a century of his own, his maiden in Tests. Awww... feather beds... these pitches.
The game started with Shannon Gabriel dismissing Rahul on a duck but then, it was all India. Shaw and Pujara counter-attacked with a double century stand with the latter missing out on a ton. The 18-year old got to his though. Then, Kohli and Rahane piled on more misery.
Okay then. India do not get bowled out. On a flat batting track in Rajkot, they have had 3 centurions, a 90, an 80, a 40, 2 double digits, 2 single digits and a duck. A paradise. This is their 6th highest total at home and second best, batting first in their own backyard.
Kraigg Brathwaite to Mohammed Shami. NOW INDIA DECLARE! Short and outside off, Shami punches it towards sweeper cover and crosses over. Kohli decides that enough is enough and calls his men back. TEA HAS BEEN TAKEN AS WELL.
Ha ha ha! Virat Kohli is smiling. He actually wants to signal about the declaration but Jadeja is not seeing him at all! Kohli waits, watches Jaddu finish his celebration and then gets ready to signal. But like a proper Test batsman, 'Sir' puts on his helmet, puts on his gloves and then gets ready to see what happens on the next ball! He is not even looking at his captain! Kohli is sheepish now and starts to laugh.
Kraigg Brathwaite to Ravindra Jadeja. THERE IT IS! MAIDEN TEST TON! Finally he gets to triple figures after threatening to do so quite a few times in the recent past. Full and outside off, Jadeja pushes it towards mid off and takes the all-important single. Takes his helmet off and leaps in the air. His first Test century, at his home ground. The Indian dressing room is on its feet.

... DAY 2, SESSION 2 ...
What next now? When will India declare? An hour post the break? Or after Tea? Kohli and Jadeja might just look to press the accelerator post Lunch. Actually, given the way the Windies are bowling, the Indians need not do anything fancy. Runs are coming quite easily. Join us back at 1210 local (0640 GMT) for the second session.
Well, feeling pity for the Windies bowlers. After a wicket in the very first over, they have simply struggled to put any pressure on the batsmen. This morning just seemed like the players have come because they have been rostered on a fielding shift and simply went through the motions. Kohli and Pant took full toll of that and made runs at will. At one point of time, it seemed like the wicket-keeper would go past his skipper but eventually, the captain got to his ton, with Pant narrowly missing out. The dominance of Pant is clearly seen in that 133-run stand with Kohli, where he scored 92.
142 runs, 29 overs, 1 wicket. Another passage of play dominated by the hosts. Pant has been the only loss, that too, perhaps due to a rush of blood. Many players love to get to milestones with a biggie and he seemed to get consumed by that.

Hello and welcome all to our coverage of Day 2 of this first Test between India and West Indies being played at Rajkot. After a magnificent century on debut by young Shaw, India find themselves in a dominating situation right from Day 1. The current pair of skipper Virat Kohli and Rishabh Pant will look to put up a big first innings total and put the Windies bowlers under pressure. West Indies, on the other hand, will be keen on breaking this partnership and enter the Indian tail at the earliest. How can the visitors stop the Indian skipper and the flamboyant keeper-batsman from taking the match away from them? Yesterday we did not see a lot of assistance for the bowlers. Will the second new ball do the trick for the tourists? We are surely in for an exciting day of Test cricket. Stay tuned...
... Day 2, Session 1 ...
We're done with today's action. Do join us on Friday for Day 2 which promises to be run-filled as the pitch will be at its best for batting. The Windies will need to be more disciplined in their approach if they want to stay in the hunt. Tune in at 0930 local (0400 GMT) for all the action. Cheers!
For India, the early loss of KL Rahul was the only moment when they would have felt any pressure. After that, the double century partnership between Shaw and Pujara forced Windies into submission and then the pair of Rahane and Kohli further inflicted the damage with a century stand. Pujara and Rahane would be gutted though for missing out on a golden opportunity to get big runs under their belts. Anyway, Virat Kohli is still out there, unbeaten on 72, and will be eyeing a daddy hundred. We can expect fireworks with Rishabh Pant around and there is still enough batting left for the home team to push their total in excess of 500.
A day to forget for Windies. It was mentally and physically tiring for them. Apart from the first five overs or so, their bowlers didn't get much assistance from the deck and looked listless on the whole. Not only did they fail to pick wickets, they conceded runs at a brisk rate too. The ploy to keep fielders in the deep allowed the batsmen time to rotate the strike with ease which didn't let any pressure build. Shannon Gabriel was decent in his first couple of spells but apart from him, the others have struggle written all over their spells. Devendra Bishoo was a major disappointment, if one has to pinpoint a single bowler.
Prithvi Shaw, the 18-year old, says that he is feeling really good now, after the century but before that, he was pretty nervous, he admits. Stresses that he has got lots of runs in domestic cricket but was trying to remind himself to forget all that. Agrees that he did think that it was his first Test innings and he had doubts about how to play but then as he got into the groove of things, he decided to play according to the merit of the delivery. On his century celebration, Shaw says that he was remembering his father as the latter has sacrificed a lot for the youngster's career. On his maturity in cricket, Prithvi says that he has played a lot of cricket right from the age of schooling and has gained a lot of experience from all those. On his disappointment after losing his wicket, Shaw says that he is definitely not happy with his score on this track as it is a good wicket to bat on. Adding further, he says that it was the last over before Tea and he could have avoided that shot, though he later admits that the stickiness on that delivery after bouncing did him in.
The day belonged to a young 18-year boy - Prithvi Shaw. There was so much build up leading to his debut and the young man handled all the pressure with ease. He played some extraordinary shots, particularly off his back foot, and showed why he is touted as the next big thing in Indian cricket. It was a truly entertaining knock where many found a mixture of Sehwag and Tendulkar in his style of batting. Plenty of records got demolished in his very first Test innings and the most notable one was him becoming the second youngest Indian to score a hundred. A star is born. Truly. Let's see what he has to say as Sanjay Manjrekar is down with him for an interview.
Another session dominated by India as they end the first day of this Test match in the driver's seat. The evening session saw 38 overs bowled where India lost the wicket of Ajinkya Rahane but also scored 132 runs in it. Shannon Gabriel to Rishabh Pant. SIX! Not in control but it has gone all the way! Gabriel digs in a short delivery, well-targeted at the batsman, doesn't matter to Pant if the close of play is just around the corner. He goes on with his pull shot, doesn't get it away off the meat of his blade but it still flies over fine leg for a biggie. First of the innings and it has come in the last over of the day.

Shannon Gabriel to Virat Kohli. Big movement there. But it bothers the keeper more than the batsman. Gabriel hurls it on a good length around off, Kohli makes an easy leave and after going past him, the ball moves in massively. It puts Dowrich's agility to full test who passes it with flying colours. Nice athleticism to dive across to his left to collect the ball.
Shannon Gabriel to Virat Kohli. Bowls it on a good length and wide outside off, an easy leave for Virat.

Chases fails to grip the new ball and fires it way down the leg side. Kohli lets it be and Dowrich has no chance of stopping it. A boundary at fine leg.
Some issue with the second new ball already. A bit of a scratch mark on the new cherry. Looks like someone has taken a bite of the apple. Anyway, they have replaced it. Roston Chase to continue from this end...

Roston Chase to Ajinkya Rahane. OUT! There is some spike on the Snicko and Rahane has to walk back, another start wasted by him. Windies are delighted. They have got a wicket against the run of play. The move to not opt for the second new ball and continue with the old one has provided them a breakthrough. Chase is the one to break this 105-run stand. Not a delivery to brag about though. It's short and wide outside off, begging to be dispatched. Rahane obliges as he goes deep inside the crease with a square cut. But he fails to middle his shot and Dowrich immediately jumps in joy after collecting the ball. They appeal and the finger goes up. Rahane has a chat with his skipper who seldom says no to a DRS-taking opportunity. The replays roll in and Snicko puts everything to rest. Waste of a review, none left for India now. Now then, something that will worry Rahane. Three of his last four dismissals have come against the spinners. A chink in his armour?
Huge shout for a caught behind. The finger has gone up. Ajinkya Rahane walks up to his skipper, has a chat with him and then signals for the DRS. Wonder why? He must be knowing whether he has edged it or not. Let's find out.

Drinks on the field, again. The Windies' search for a breakthrough continues. To be honest, their field setup is not for wicket-taking anyway. Quite defensive. The bowlers are lacking plans. The evening session is about to begin and we welcome you again for all the action. The Windies have two new batsmen in the middle and would like to dismiss them early. But the names of those two are Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane, so easier said than done. Right? Sherman Lewis to kickoff proceedings. Two slips in place.
... DAY 1, THIRD SESSION ...
39 overs left in the day. If the Windies bowl all of these, I daresay my fingers are going to get quite some pain by the end. Realistically speaking, we are looking at the visitors falling 8-9 overs short. Brathwaite might have to opt for the spinners a bit more than usual to try and complete as many overs as possible. Join us back at 1430 local (0900 GMT).
The Windies have looked listless right after the first Drinks break. They have bowled an odd good ball here and there but simply have not been consistent. They will consider themselves lucky in taking two wickets. More pain might be there come the final session.
The Indians started this session from the word go, attacking the bowlers. Then, from nowhere, Windies got Pujara. Kohli then came in and closed the shutters a bit while the debutant continued his flow. But towards the end of the session, Bishoo managed to snap him. Looking at the score, the hosts will not be too concerned. 232/3 in just 2 sessions. With Kohli yet to get going. Pant to come. Jadeja to come. Anything apart from runs to come?
India's session without a doubt but just that wicket of Shaw in the dying moments takes some gloss off it. 99 runs came in 26 overs, for the loss of Pujara and Shaw. Both dismissals can be touted to loss in concentration, rather than excellent bowling.

Devendra Bishoo to Prithvi Shaw. OUT! The debutant's fine show ends. Just moments before Tea. A nothing delivery, a nothing shot. Short ball, around off, Shaw goes back and looks to work it to the leg side. However, the ball stops on the pitch and now Prithvi looks to push it through the line. But he ends up chipping it tamely to Bishoo who takes it but so pulverized are the Windies that no one is celebrating. The Indians are silent too. Stunned, in fact. The way Prithvi was batting, it seemed like he was timing everything beautifully. A soft dismissal. Now, the entire crowd stands up like one to applaud. Well played, kid.

Skipper Virat Kohli walks in at number 4, replacing Pujara.
Sherman Lewis to Cheteshwar Pujara. OUT! Caught behind! A rare glorious moment for the Windies as they prize out the 206-run stand. But a big moment for the debutant. Nothing special on the delivery, but just a lapse in concentration from the batsman. A length ball outside off, could have been left alone but Pujara has a flirt at it. Perhaps he wants to rotate strike and get to the other end. But then, he realizes that he can let the ball go. That indecision costs him and a thin outside edge is produced. The keeper pouches it and the Windies appeal but Pujara is not going! Now Ian Gould raises his finger and sends him on his way. The home lad will feel disappointed on missing out on a century. It was there for the taking.

On a length, around middle and leg, Prithvi misses his tuck. He too, seems shocked that he has missed out on a scoring opportunity. Devendra Bishoo to Prithvi Shaw. Thrown up wide outside off, driven straight to cover.
Keemo Paul to Cheteshwar Pujara. Full and outside off, pretty wide, left alone.
Oh dear. Not good. Not good at all. Keemo Paul is on his haunches and seems to be struggling with the heat. His teammates are surrounding him and the physio is out too. Doesn't look like cramps. More like dehydration. Very difficult to play in such conditions if one is not used to these. Meanwhile, the umpires take the opportunity to call for Drinks. India maintain their ascendancy post Lunch. 60 runs have come in just 11.5 overs. The good thing for India is that they have come from both ends, not from just Shaw's bat alone. He is on a different planet altogether and would like to see - when was the last time Pujara batted so quickly?
Keemo Paul to Cheteshwar Pujara. FOUR! SUBLIME! Overpitched on middle, Pujara comes forward and drives it straight back to where it came from. Once again, Shaw is down at the non-striker's end. Not because he is struggling but because he was trying to get back into his crease.
Keemo Paul to Cheteshwar Pujara. Full and outside off, driven straight to cover.
Keemo Paul to Cheteshwar Pujara. Around off and outside, pushed towards the leg side.
Tough for the bowler. Paul comes running in but at the last moment, Pujara backs away. Probably something or someone must have distracted him behind the sightscreen.

Keemo Paul to Prithvi Shaw. TEST TON ON DEBUT! 15th Indian to do so and only the second by an opener. 7th youngest centurion in Tests. A proud moment for him and even more for his teammates. Take a bow, Prithvi Shaw. He is just an 18-year old. Who knows, how many more will he have by the time his Test career ends? Too early to think about that. His career has just taken off. Coming to the ball, Shaw drives it through the covers and scampers back for the second. Takes his helmet off and then soaks in the applause. Virat Kohli cannot hide his glee. This is a thing about colts these days. They are not afraid of the situation or any challenge. He has been given an opportunity and he has accepted that with open arms.

He takes the single and then looks to come back for the second. Pujara responds but then is sent back. He stutters, looks to get back and eventually dives in.
Right then. Here comes the moment. Shaw on 98. Can he get to his century in this over?

Shannon Gabriel to Cheteshwar Pujara. Full on middle, flicked straight to short mid-wicket.
Shannon Gabriel to Prithvi Shaw. Good call from Pujara. A back of a length delivery outside off, Shaw backs away slightly and then guides it behind point. He takes the first run quickly and wants the second but that would have been suicidal. The fielder had already got to the ball and had the second been taken, a run out opportunity would have been created. Pujara sent Shaw back in time though.
Shannon Gabriel to Cheteshwar Pujara. Outside off, played behind point for a single.

Welcome back for the afternoon session. The men concerned are back on the field. Both the current Indian batsmen will be eyeing daddy hundreds with the way they are going. For Windies, they need a breakthrough immediately otherwise it will be a leather hunt for them. Devendra Bishoo to begin proceedings. A few fielders already placed in the deep and there is just one slip in a catching position. On the defensive, not good signs. Anyway, here we go...
... DAY 1, SECOND SESSION ...
Not surprisingly, the visitors look flat and decimated already. There are fielding lapses being seen and the bowling is being more on the shorter side. All this on just the opening session of a Test match. Hopefully, we get some competitive cricket in the second session.
When the ball stops moving after 5 overs, then you will never wish to be a bowler. Spare a thought for the Windies. The track is as flat as the national highway but full credit to Shannon Gabriel whose 6-0-15-1 stands out in this heat. The rest have been ordinary, including the spinners, who have not been able to exert some control.
The day started well for the Windies though, with Shannon Gabriel trapping Lokesh Rahul LBW in the very first over. But after that, it has been one-way traffic. Shaw just took the bull by the horns and did not allow any bowler to dominate, while Pujara, after consuming a few balls early on, has started to stamp his authority.
You don't need to be a rocket scientist to find out that this is India's session. 133 runs, at a run rate of more than 5 an over. More than half of those being scored by an 18-year old. Oh yes, it is India's present with the future looking more than good.

He gets a thick outside edge but because the second slip has been removed, the ball flies through the unmanned area. All the way to the third man fence.
Sherman Lewis to Cheteshwar Pujara. On a length outside off, Pujara waits for the ball to come to him and dabs it towards third man for a single.
3 minutes to go for Lunch. Seems like Windies are not interested in even trying to get more than one over before the break. Here's Lewis.

DRINKS. Prithvi Shaw's session. He has been in the news right from last afternoon and continues to be, with every ball that he is facing and every shot that he is playing. He has shown no signs of nerves at all and taken the attack to the opposition. Attack - yes. With a strike rate of 91.67 in a Test match, what else would you say? One of my colleagues, ABK, jokes - he looks like a combination of Sehwag and Tendulkar. The former for flair. The latter for class and temperament. Just so that you don't feel that this is a blog about Shaw, let us focus on the game a bit. Windies have been a mixed bag. When the ball was moving around a bit, they managed to get a wicket but in the last half an hour or so, they have been pretty flat, just like the track. With Pujara now getting amongst the runs, the run-rate is on the move. Not to mention, the over rate is appalling.

Devendra Bishoo to Cheteshwar Pujara. FOUR! A short ball, down the leg side, Pujara initially looks to pull. But then, he is cramped for room a touch, probably because the ball spins in and bounces a touch. He now tries to adjust and attempts to lap it fine. As a result, gets a top edge which lands safely behind square leg. Finds the fence too. Moves to 20 from 28 balls. He was 2 from 18, not too long ago.

In comes one of the local lads - Cheteshwar Pujara, pretty much earlier than he would have expected. Keemo Paul to bowl from the other end.
Shannon Gabriel to Lokesh Rahul. OUT! LBW! Waste of a review by Rahul. Gabriel has struck in the first over. Beauty of a delivery after a wasted first few balls. On a length outside off, Rahul puts in half a stride but fails to cover the line. The ball comes back in a long way and hits him flush on the pads. Gabriel appeals and appeals but umpire Ian Gould is not impressed. Eventually, after a long thought, he raises his finger. Rahul walks across to his partner, has a chat and then signals for the review. Bad choice. Hawk Eye shows the impact in line and the ball crashing into the middle and leg stumps. A blob for Rahul then. 5th overall in Tests but the second in his last 5 innings.
Howzzat? Rahul has been adjudged LBW. He has taken the review though. Looks plumb to the naked eye.

A length ball outside off, not as wide as the previous one, Prithvi gets on top of the bounce and punches it through the covers. The fielder from point gets to the ball, puts in a slide, pulls the ball back in but it rolls back towards the ropes. However, he dives after coming out and saves the boundary. Three runs taken.
Shannon Gabriel to Prithvi Shaw. A little bit of movement in the air, but a touch wide outside off, Shaw shoulders arms.
The anthems are done and the players make their way out to the middle. A big, big moment for Prithvi Shaw as he takes the field, ahead of Lokesh Rahul. Now, the Windies follow suit. Shannon Gabriel will make the first use of the new cherry. Shaw will face him. Amazing. Normally, the senior pro takes strike first up but not this kid. Here we go. Let's play!
Time for the national anthems. As is the tradition, the Windies' one is played first up.
Kraigg Brathwaite says that he also wanted to bat first. But now, hopes that his bowlers strike with the new ball and get some early wickets. Is eager to stay aggressive and enjoy the game. Informs that Jason Holder is missing out due to an ankle injury while Sunil Ambris comes back into the playing XI. Also tells that Sherman Lewis makes his Test debut for the Windies. On his unit doing well recently, Brathwaite hopes that the good run continues.
Virat Kohli says the surface is nice and dry and the grass is there to hold it together. Reckons that the conditions are good to play cricket as well and feels that the spinners will come into play on Day 3 and further. Feels sad for Shardul Thakur on missing out but is equally excited to see the young Prithvi Shaw and Umesh Yadav in the playing XI. On the team aim, Virat stresses that the basics should not be let go of - the batsmen need to get runs while the bowlers should not be letting their focus dip.
TOSS - We are all set for the spin of the coin. But big news - KRAIGG BRATHWAITE has come out in place of Jason Holder. Kohli flips the coin, Brathwaite calls Heads but it is a Tail. INDIA ELECT TO BAT FIRST.
WEATHER - The conditions are a bit murky with the sun yet to assume full heat. But needless to say, as the first session comes to a close, the players will feel the heat.
With India making a statement, announcing their twelve yesterday afternoon itself, they have gone even bolder by announcing the playing XI well before the toss. PRITHVI SHAW IS MAKING HIS TEST DEBUT while Shardul Thakur is the one missing out in this game. As for the Windies, we await their team news.
Test cricket is back in India! And it is inaugurated with Windies coming to the shores. A low-profile series it might be, but could make the careers for a few players from both sides. Prithvi Shaw for India. Sunil Ambris for the Windies, if selected. Also, a chance for the Indian batsmen to tune up before the tour to Australia. And, a chance for the tourists to show that they can provide a better future for their country in this sport. Hello and a warm welcome to the opening Test of the 2-match series between India and Windies in Rajkot.
The Windies have around 30 minutes to bat till Lunch. The least they can hope is to try and see off this period without losing a wicket. The players are back out to the middle. Kraigg Brathwaite and Kieran Powell come to bat for the second time in 2 days. The skipper will take strike to Mohammed Shami. Here we go...
What to talk about the Windies? Seemed clueless with the bat. Chase showed how to bat on this wicket while Paul was brilliant in his first innings in India. Sunil Ambris showed a bit of promise but he needs to be patient as well. The rest were simply poor.
The bowling was accurate and pinpoint. Exactly how a dominant team should bowl. Shami strutted his stuff with swing and reverse while Ashwin and Jadeja did their bit with spin. Umesh Yadav was disappointing yesterday but he made up for it this morning. Kuldeep Yadav though, was a big disappointment. He was being attacked but he did not vary his pace at all and even struggled to land the ball on a consistent length.
The innings has been done and dusted in 48 overs. Apart from the Chase-Paul stand this morning, India have simply not had to break any sweat. The most bowlers bowled were 11 by Umesh and Ashwin each.
Ravichandran Ashwin to Shannon Gabriel. OUT! Easily stumped. The carrom ball becomes the undoing of Gabriel after playing out almost the whole over watchfully. The ball is tossed up outside off and Shannon is drawn forward to defend. He misses the line comprehensively and almost as a reflex action, his feet come out of the crease. He tries to get his left foot back but by that time Pant has whipped off the bails. It always looked out to the naked eye but Ian Gould at square leg did not want to take any chances. INDIA LEAD BY 468 AND HAVE ENFORCED THE FOLLOW-ON.
Is that stumped? Gabriel looks to be a goner but umpire Ian Gould just wants to be sure. referred upstairs...

Umesh Yadav to Keemo Paul. OUT! Umesh has broken through! The dangerous Paul is dismissed, just 3 short of his maiden Test fifty. End of a wonderful knock. The bowler is also sensing it as for the first time in 7 wickets, we have seen someone celebrating or roaring. Clearly India were getting frustrated and are pumped up now. A short ball outside off, Paul instantly looks to pull. But the pace of Umesh does him in. He is not able to time his shot properly and the ball gently lobs towards mid-wicket. Cheteshwar Pujara comes running a few paces and takes a good catch. This is one thing which Shami missed this morning. He kept bowling full, full and full, searching for swing while Umesh has tried all sorts of things, eventually getting rewarded. Mohammed Shami to Keemo Paul. EDGED, FOUR! Interesting tactic from Paul. He has noticed that the ball is reversing and is trying to counter it by walking down the pitch. He does so here, but Shami bowls it wide outside off. Pretty full, the drive is attempted again and this time the outside edge is induced. But it goes wide of gully to the third man fence.
Mohammed Shami to Keemo Paul. And again. The drive, the swing and then the miss.
Mohammed Shami to Keemo Paul. Full and outside off, Paul reaches out to drive but misses.
Mohammed Shami to Roston Chase. DIRECT HIT WOULD HAVE HAD PAUL! Kuldeep has his hands on his head. That would have been the second run out of the innings. Full and outside off, Chase pushes it to the off side and then calls his partner through. Paul responds but is a bit late to take off. Kuldeep Yadav gets across to his left from cover, collects the ball, takes aim and then has a shy at the striker's end with Keemo not even halfway down the pitch. Misses.

Kuldeep Yadav to Keemo Paul. FOUR! 10 runs from the opening over of the day! Full and around off, Paul gets down and clobbers the sweep past Prithvi Shaw at short leg. There is a man at long leg but before he can run 5 paces, the ball is past him to the square leg boundary!
Kuldeep Yadav to Keemo Paul. Floated outside off, KP looks to defend but gets a thick inside edge onto his pads. Short leg thinks he has a chance but the ball drops down in front of him.

Kuldeep Yadav to Keemo Paul. Short and outside off, punched straight to cover.
Nice to see Kohli smiling. He is with his teammates in a huddle and seems to be giving some instructions. Now, the players disperse. Out walk Roston Chase and Keemo Paul. Kuldeep Yadav will begin proceedings for the day. Paul to face. Here we go!
After a totally one-sided matchup prior to the weekend, will Saturday prove any different? The Windies have simply not turned up either with the bat or ball and India look all set to get a massive lead. The question is - will Kohli enforce the follow-on if the lower order bats for more than an hour? On the other side, can the tourists frustrate the hosts with some resilience? Hello and a warm welcome to the third day of the opening Test between India and Windies in Rajkot.
... DAY 3, MORNING SESSION ...
Alright then! This match has developed pace in a frenetic manner. The Indian bowlers will be looking to come back fresh on Saturday morning and try and get the remaining 4 wickets in the first hour. And then, probably enforce the follow-on and give us an off on Sunday. Join us at 0930 local (0400 GMT). ADIOS! TAKE CARE!
Ravindra Jadeja is now giving an interview to Sanjay Manjrekar. The all-rounder says that he is happy on getting a ton after 9 years in international cricket. Details that in the past, he used to get out in the 70s and 80s, thinking about the century. But today, he finally managed to get past that mental hurdle. Admits that he too, is surprised and disappointed that he has never got a hundred and is very happy that he eventually got one, which he will remember for a long time. On being reminded about his 80-odd against England recently, he says that in that inning, Anderson and Broad were bowling really well and the conditions were overcast as well, which means not much was there in the batsmen's favour. Hence, he was only thinking about scoring runs. First 50, then move on from there and keep going. Talking about being given opportunities, he remembers that he was given a chance after 15 months, where he spent time away from ODI cricket. (The topic has diverted to Asia Cup by the way). Admits that he felt the pressure to perform - but to himself, not for others. Further says that he is enjoying his cricket. On being asked about his affected run out today, he explains that when he saw both Hetmyer and Ambris at one end, he thought that there is no need to hurry and hence he was walking towards the stumps. But suddenly, he saw Hetmyer running and had a shy. Is embarrassed about what would have happened had he missed and considers himself lucky that his shy found the mark.
Is this Indian attack the best in the world? No Bhuvi. No Bumrah. No Ishant. Yet they have piled on the pressure on the opposition. Agreed, the Windies are not that technically sound but this is a terrific team bowling effort. First, you need to see the new-ball bowlers off in Shami or Bumrah or Bhuvi. Then, you encounter the spin of Ashwin or Jadeja or Kuldeep. The main bowlers did well in England. And here, the bench has strutted its stuff.
The opening batsmen were clueless against the guile of Shami while the middle order was consumed by spin. Then of course, some generosity was produced as well in a run out and a wild shot. Overall, nothing much to describe in the tourists' batting, except for Roston Chase, who has shown the gumption to survive.
A forgettable couple of days for the visiting side. First, they were pummeled mercilessly with the bat and then, have been almost skittled out in not even half the time. The players look fagged out under the heat and have simply not turned up.
Mohammed Shami to Roston Chase. The reverse on offer again. Full on off, coming in a long way, Chase just about keeps it out towards mid-wicket. STUMPS ON DAY 2, WINDIES TRAIL BY 555!

Kuldeep Yadav to Keemo Paul. The batsman has defended it by getting right behind the line of the delivery.
Into the bowlers now. Keemo Paul is the first of them.
Kuldeep Yadav to Shane Dowrich. OUT! Right through! Kuldeep is amongst the wickets as well. Tossed up around off and outside, Dowrich looks to push it through the off side but is done in by the flight and pace. He misses and the ball spins right in, hitting the timber. This is similar to the way Kuldeep dismissed Peter Handscomb from Australia in the Dharamsala Test.

Issue with the ball. Kuldeep shows it to the umpire and Kohli comes across, a bit concerned. Umpire Nigel Llong puts it through the 8-shaped guage and it passes through. So the ball is given back to the bowler. Nothing wrong with the shape.

Ravindra Jadeja to Sunil Ambris. OUT! Strikes first ball! The magic of 'Sir' on display straightaway. Full and outside off, Ambris looks to drive it forcefully through the off side but he is not quite to the pitch of the ball. It spins away, takes the outside edge and Ajinkya Rahane at first slip takes a sharp catch. From Ambris' point of view, well, his policy might have been to attack Jadeja from the word go. But he could have waited a couple of balls and then tried his ploy. Half the side is back in just 16 overs.
Here comes 'Sir' Ravindra Jadeja.

Umesh Yadav gets a warning, meanwhile, for running on the danger area. Not official, just a friendly advice.
Umesh Yadav to Sunil Ambris. Full on middle, Ambris flicks it uppishly and it almost carries towards Prithvi Shaw at square leg! That is a very rare position in Test cricket. Seems like Kohli has studied Ambris well in whatever little time he has spent at the crease.
Umesh Yadav to Sunil Ambris. Defended off the back foot by the batsman.
Umesh Yadav to Sunil Ambris. Around off, defended from the crease.
Good news for India. Mohammed Shami is back on the field.
DRINKS BREAK. Terrorizing passage of play for the visiting side. They were not able to get much wickets when India were batting and now, they are not able to get any runs. They are not even close to face pace or spin. With 15 overs left in the day, all they can hope now is to try and see those out without any more damage. All the best.

Ravichandran Ashwin to Shimron Hetmyer. OUT! Confusion everywhere! Oh dear... a comedy of errors. First, a short ball. Hetmyer works it towards the leg side and initially sets off. Ambris responds but then Hetmyer changes his mind. Both batsmen are within handshaking distance of each other and then go back into the batting crease. Now, Ambris is frustrated and plonks his bat at the striker's end. Amidst all this, Jadeja has still not released the throw. Seeing that, Hetmyer starts to run. Jadeja still does not throw and Ashwin has already walked away from the stumps. At the last moment, Jaddu throws and luckily for him, it hits the stumps! He smiles but Kohli is not amused.
Ravichandran Ashwin to Shimron Hetmyer. Lucky escape. Full and on middle, Hetmyer comes down the track and looks to go over the top but mistimes it over mid-wicket. Jadeja hares after it from mid on and keeps the batsmen to a couple.

Ravichandran Ashwin to Shimron Hetmyer. Full and outside off, watchfully defended.
Ravichandran Ashwin to Sunil Ambris. Full on middle, pushed through mid on for a single. Ambris has actually got what he wished. His couple of shots through and over the infield in Ashwin's previous over have resulted in Kohli spreading the field. Strange.

Ravichandran Ashwin to Shai Hope. OUT! BOWLED! For a second, we felt that it was a play and a miss. It is indeed a play and a miss but the ball has missed the bat and hit the stump. Ashwin amongst the wickets now. Full and outside off, Hope comes half forward to defend but misses. The ball goes past the bat, misses his back pad as he looks to cover the line and then clips the bail over the off stump. Superb.
Ravichandran Ashwin to Shimron Hetmyer. On middle, flicked towards mid-wicket for a single.
Umesh Yadav to Shai Hope. Outside off, punched through the off side.
Umesh Yadav to Shimron Hetmyer. Full, very full, almost a yorker, Hetmyer pushes it back past the bowler. Takes Ashwin on at mid off and gets a quick single. There is a shy at the bowler's end and it is a direct hit but the batsman is well in.
Umesh Yadav to Shimron Hetmyer. Stays back in his crease and punches it back to the bowler.

Who is next to face the Shami music? Shimron Hetmyer comes the reply from one of my colleagues. Can he get Windies out of this mire?
Mohammed Shami to Kieran Powell. OUT! One brings another and now Shami has two! The around the wicket angle has done the trick for the bowling side. Shami comes charging in and Powell, shuffles across his sticks. He misses his flick and is hit flush in front. Shami appeals and up goes Ian Gould's finger! Powell is ready to go back but then Hope calls him back and they decide to go for the review. Bad, bad call. Not from the umpire. But by the batsmen. Hit in line, going to hit the stumps.
Powell has been adjudged LBW! But he wants another look at it. Looks dead plumb.
Umesh Yadav to Shai Hope. Outside off, punched to the off side.

Mohammed Shami to Shai Hope. The ball is too wide on the off side for the batsman to make any contact.
Mohammed Shami to Shai Hope. Outside off, an easier leave this time as the ball is a touch wide.
Mohammed Shami to Shai Hope. Another cracker. Shami is getting into his groove. The ball lands on a length outside off, Hope is leaving it but then that nut comes back in a long way. Just about misses the sticks.
Shai Hope comes in at number 3, replacing his skipper.
Mohammed Shami to Kraigg Brathwaite. OUT! The delivery is deemed legal and the Windies captain has to depart. Replays seemed touch and go and it felt as if the foot landed on the line. However... anyways. That takes nothing away from the delivery. This is the Shami we all know about. Not the one who bowled the first over. He lands this on a good length outside off and skids it on. Brathwaite is not sure - whether to play from the crease or go forward. Whether the ball will move in or move out. Eventually, he decides to play back, as the ball comes in. But he is late. The cherry shoots onto his pads, misses the bat and knocks the off stump out of the ground. What a sight for any fast bowler. Brathwaite is asked to wait and as the replays are shown, Kohli is seen nervous. On the line? Anything behind? Something behind, according to the one sitting upstairs. That's what matters.
Bowled! Neck and crop! But has Shami overstepped? They are checking...

Mohammed Shami to Kraigg Brathwaite. Brathwaite is away. Windies are away. Full and down the leg side, the skipper flicks it towards fine leg and gets off the mark. A rusty over from Shami - all over the place. Sprayed it everywhere.

Mohammed Shami to Kraigg Brathwaite. A length ball around off, Brathwaite looks to tuck it to the leg side but misses and is hit on the thigh pads.
Right then! That ends a totally one-sided Test match. Not sure we were expecting anything different but we were HOPING for a contest. Will we see anything different in the second Test? Join us on Friday, October 12, 2018 in Hyderabad from 9.30 am local (0400 GMT). Till then you can catch some more one-sided stuff in the SA-Zim series and 'hope' for a contest in the Pak-Aus clash. ADIOS! TAKE CARE!
PRITHVI SHAW HAS BEEN NAMED THE MAN OF THE MATCH for his fantastic century. Says that he is more happy for the team and is happier that his contribution could come in the cause. Says that there is no change in the preparation - whether one plays First Class Cricket or Test cricket. Hopes to continue doing his stuff.
Victorious Indian captain Virat Kohli says that one cannot compare the conditions in England and here. Is honest enough to admit that with India's quality, they are expected to be dominating at home, purely because they have done that so many times in the past. Dodges the question about Windies' surrender and says that his team's focus is to be consistent and they did that. Stresses further that it was a clinical performance and is delighted for Shaw and Jadeja. Praises the 18-year old for grabbing the opportunity with both hands. Also says that the declaration was delayed purely because the team wanted the all-rounder to reach his century. On the seam bowling, Virat says that both the quicks were very good, on a track which had nothing for fast bowlers. Adds further that the spinners have always been good on such surfaces any which ways. Informs that the reason for going in with 5 main bowlers was to rotate the players in the heat. Smiles on being informed that India's over-rate was close to 17 an hour and puts it down to the new rules which do not allow flexibility in drinking water. Also says that India were never bothered with the over rate as they have plenty of spinners in their ranks who finish off their overs quickly.
Windies captain Kraigg Brathwaite credits India for showing how to master Test cricket. On being asked about the margin of defeat, Kraigg puts it down to batting issues with no partnerships being strung. Feels that had they got 2 or 3 big stands, they would have done well. On being asked about Jason Holder's fitness, Brathwaite says that he is not sure and they will have to assess in the next couple of days.
That was NOT the presentation. It is coming up now...
Kuldeep says that sometimes it takes a little bit of time to take wickets and in the second innings, he was rewarded for his patience. On his liking for the types of balls, Yadav goes the opposite. Says he likes Kookaburra and is not so happy with the SG. On his ploy to come around the wicket, the chinaman says that they discussed it in the dressing room and he was asked to try changing the angle and it worked.
Ravichandran Ashwin is giving an interview to Sanjay Manjrekar, along with Kuldeep Yadav. The offie says that he was bowling really well before injury and only wanted to get that rhythm back. Admits that he was nervous yesterday but once he bowled a couple of overs, he got confident. On the difference between the types of balls in England and India, Ashwin says that there is a massive factor in terms of gripping and movement. On his preference, he says that he loves holding the Dukes ball but is disappointed with Kookaburra. Is okay with the SG. On being asked about Windies' surrender, Ashwin does not admit on the upfront but then eventually says that he is shocked more than surprised to see so many shots being played in a Test match.
This Test match result cannot come in any better manner for the Indian side. They have just come from a gruelling Test series in England with the batsmen not making runs and the spinners struggling. Back home, both the negatives have been converted into positives and all of a sudden, the mindset is double positive, which will not do them any harm before their tour to Australia.
After being asked to bat again, perhaps one might have expected to see some fight from the Windies. There was a bit - with Kieran Powell really playing well. But once he got out, the procession was fuelled. What was surprising was the amount of shots played in the second innings. As many as 7 sixes were hit, with the batsmen clearly trying to hit the spinners off their lengths. But they were just trying it way too often and paid the price.
Now about India's bowling because there is nothing much to talk about their opponents' batting. Test match is a test of patience but they were hardly tested. Shami struck early with the new ball in the first innings and then Ashwin got 4 more because of his guile than the pitch.
It could not have started better for the visiting side. Coming on Indian soil, then striking in the first over. But after that, it just got pear-shaped. Prithvi Shaw's attack put them on the defensive and they simply could not get going. Keemo Paul breaking down before Lunch on Thursday did not help matters either and as a result, they saw 3 centurions, a 90-odd and an 80-odd. Bishoo did get a 4-fer but was not that threatening.
The players shake hands but Jason Holder just sits there in the Windies' dressing room, totally flummoxed. Was this a pitch which seemed like a minefield? Or was it all in the mind? Perhaps the latter.
Ravindra Jadeja to Shannon Gabriel. OUT! That ends the Test match. Thank you for watching. India have earned their BIGGEST EVER WIN IN TEST CRICKET, in terms of runs. We are back for the final session of the day. Perhaps, what should be the final session of the match. Shane Dowrich and Sherman Lewis stride out to face the Indian spinners. Ravindra Jadeja will bowl the first over post Tea.
... Day 3, Session 3 ...
Just a mere formality left in this game now. Don't expect the Windies to try and block to delay the inevitable. Stay tuned... in case it becomes a you-blink-and-miss final session of the match.
India were happy with the way their opposition were playing. Just keep looping the ball, be prepared to get hit for a few boundaries and then get wickets on a platter. Shami and Umesh have bowled just 6 overs, happy to just field the ball while the spin trio has taken 8/152 in 38 overs combined.
This was expected but not at such a high strike rate. The Windies are not known to be great players of spin and hence they collapsed in the first innings. Perhaps coach Stuart Law instructed them to play their shots in the second innings. The start was decent - 79/1 at one stage but then as they say, if the batsmen lived by the sword, they died by it as well.
Sorry state of affairs. We are about to witness a 3-day Test. 12 wickets have fallen in 2 sessions today - to be more precise, in just 63 overs. That is almost a wicket every 5 overs. 11 of those have been to spin.
Ravichandran Ashwin to Devendra Bishoo. OUT! Fantastic review from Pant and India! Windies are 8 down. The Indians are all smiles. Especially Ashwin. The keeper was the only person confident while the others were just joining in. Coming to the ball, it is down the leg side and Bishoo looks to sweep it fine. However, he misses. Now, Pant hears something and instantly appeals. For a second, I realize that age is catching up with me and my hearing senses are getting numb. But to my relief, none of my colleagues heard any sound either. But India put in a huge appeal while umpire Ian Gould shakes his head. Pant immediately urges Kohli to go for the review and his captain promptly agrees. Snickometer shows it in the first go. Terrific review though... wonder how come the others did not hear the noise? That includes me too. Anyways... TEA HAS BEEN TAKEN ON DAY 3.
HOWZZAT? HOWZZAT? HOWZZAT? Pant reckons that he has Bishoo caught behind. India have reviewed it.

Ravindra Jadeja to Keemo Paul. OUT! Another gift of a wicket. That Sunday holiday seems to be more inviting to the Windies than us. Tossed up outside off, Paul looks to add to the tally of the sixes of his team. But there is a man placed at long off. Straight to Umesh Yadav. Sigh. Really pitiable.

Kuldeep Yadav to Kieran Powell. OUT! Edged and taken! MAIDEN TEST FIFER FOR KULDEEP! Number 6 is down and this one is of the set batsman - Powell. A beautiful ball.
