West Indies vs Sri Lanka Highlights And Cricket Score 1st Match - Test Summary
Right then! That is a quick wrap up on Day 5 - Windies needing less than 30 overs to take the 7 Sri Lankan wickets. Sunil Gavaskar reckons that this is a sign of the Windies' revival. The Lankans do not have too much time to regroup. The second Test begins on Thursday, 14th June, 2018 at Gros Islet. Join us at 10 am local (1400 GMT) for all the action from that Test. Until then, ADIOS! TAKE CARE!
Victorious Windies captain Jason Holder is extremely happy to start the series with a win. He feels that yesterday it was very tough for his bowlers to pick up wickets but still they tried hard. Praises his team overall for the spirited performance. Stresses that he was not worried after Stumps last evening as he believed that the pitch will get tougher to bat on. On Kieran Powell, Jason says that he has a lot of potential and wants him to be more consistent. Adds that he was disappointed with Powell not getting a century. On his viewpoints about his team's performance, Holder says that he will come down very hard on his team for the chances they missed as well. But also praises his fast bowlers for bowling consistently fast and the spinners doing well today.
SHANE DOWRICH HAS BEEN NAMED THE PLAYER OF THE MATCH for his first innings ton. He admits that it is a very good feeling. On the pitch, he says that the batsmen had to work for runs and there was plenty for the bowlers. On his own thought process, he says that he just stuck to the basics. On the plans and preparation in general, he stresses on being consistent and praises his coach Floyd Reifer for his continuous inputs which helped him in his Test while batting.
Sri Lankan captain, Dinesh Chandimal, blames the poor fielding on Day 1, dropping crucial chances, for the defeat. But is quick to add that they need to make a turnaround soon. Looks at the positives in Kusal Mendis' knock and Lahiru Kumara's bowling in both innings. Praises the Windies for playing outstanding cricket throughout the five days. On Dhananjaya de Silva's possible inclusion for the second Test, Chandimal hints that it might well be a possibility, especially since he has played at number 3 in the last 4-5 matches.
Now to the Windies' bowling. It has been a while since we have seen quick bowlers taking wickets for the home side. Bouncing the batsmen out, hitting them in the rib cage, then gloves and eventually making life uncomfortable. The seamers picked 8 wickets in the first innings while the last day was for the spinners - this is only the SECOND TIME that Sri Lanka have lost 7 wickets to spinners in a Test inning outside Asia. Devendra Bishoo and Roston Chase being the beneficiaries - the latter especially striking twice in that last over before Lunch, removing Chandimal and Dickwella. Really disappointing for the Lankans. Stay tuned for the presentation.
Plenty of bowling positives for Sri Lanka initially, with Lahiru Kumara snapping up a 4-fer but then he got no support from the rest. In the second innings too, Kumara was the only one to be talked about. Slyly, Windies prepared a track which had lot of bounce and pace, not much spin and effectively negated Herath. Result? He got only 3 wickets in the entire match.
In the second innings, Sri Lanka probably smelt a chance when they had the Windies at 75/3 but then Kieran Powell kept them at bay. Then with the bat, apart from Kusal Mendis who scored a spectacular century, there was nothing much to talk about the batting again. They are missing someone who can grind it out in the middle.
The first day probably summed up the situation for Sri Lanka. They had the Windies on the mat, at 147/5 but allowed the home side to cross 400, not to mention the numerous dropped catches. Then the batting did not justify itself either, folding up for 185.
A Test win after 10 years for Windies against Sri Lanka. This is also their biggest win against Sri Lanka in Tests and also their biggest against any opponent in terms of runs, at Port Of Spain in this format!
Roston Chase to Lahiru Kumara. OUT! That is the end of the innings and match! This was definitely out. Full and outside off, Kumara looked to defend but missed it. Dowrich fumbled and then took it on the second attempt. He appealed, umpire Kettleborough took his time but then raised his finger! Snickometer confirms an inside edge onto Kumara's pads. WINDIES WIN BY 226 RUNS!
Roston Chase to Suranga Lakmal. OUT! Given caught behind! Lakmal is not happy at all. Outside off, Suranga looks to defend but misses. The keeper collects, appeals, so does Roston Chase and up goes the umpire's finger! Lakmal stands there disappointed, he perhaps wants the review but there is none. Replays indicate possible daylight between bat and ball.
Devendra Bishoo to Suranga Lakmal. The batsman works it down the leg side. They pick up a single.
Devendra Bishoo to Suranga Lakmal. RUN OUT MISSED! Oh dear... Bishoo is embarrassed. Short and outside off, Lakmal slices it towards point. He is ball-watching while Dilruwan is already beside him to shake hands. Lakmal has no idea where his partner is and simply goes back. Dilruwan now runs back but is gone for all money. The throw is a simple one to the bowler but Bishoo simply does not collect!
Devendra Bishoo to Suranga Lakmal. Full and outside off, solidly defended.
Devendra Bishoo to Rangana Herath. OUT! Spin, bounce, edge and a catch. A proper leg spinner's dismissal. Full and around off, Herath lunges to defend but the ball spins in, bounces a touch, takes the inside edge and lobs straight to Shai Hope at short leg. Herath walks off even before the finger is raised. 2 wickets more...
Devendra Bishoo to Rangana Herath. Around off, spinning in, Herath works it towards short leg.
Devendra Bishoo to Dilruwan Perera. Full and outside off, Perera comes down the track and works it wide of mid on for a single.
Roston Chase to Dilruwan Perera. Gets it past short leg and earns a single.
Roston Chase to Dilruwan Perera. Full and outside off, DP comes down the track and looks to defend, getting a thick inside edge on his pads.
Roston Chase to Dilruwan Perera. This time he comes forward and works it wide of mid-wicket.
Roston Chase to Dilruwan Perera. Outside off, pushed to the off side.
Roston Chase to Dilruwan Perera. Very full and outside off, Dilruwan stays back to defend but the ball keeps low and goes off the outside edge past slip.
