Sri Lanka vs South Africa Highlights And Cricket Score 1st Match - T20I Summary
After quite a one-sided One-Day series, we needed a thriller to shake things up and we got exactly that. South Africa have taken a 1-0 lead in the series which has two more matches to go. Let us hope that the second game will be as exciting as this one. Do join us for that at 1800 local (1600 GMT). Till then, goodbye and take care!
South Africa captain, Faf du Plessis, says this game was great fun. Feels that his side needed something like this as it tested all the players' character and resolve. On David Miller as wicket-keeper, he says that they just wanted to explore their options and is quite pleased it come off well. Opines that they bowled really well but is surprised with the surface and reckons that in hindsight it wasn't such a good decision to bat second. Praises Lasith Malinga for his outstanding bowling display and mentions that his team can learn a lot from this. On Andile Phehlukwayo (that his middle name is Lucky), Faf chuckles and says that he's never lucky, but then goes on to state that it's his bravery which is his biggest asset. Continues to praise him and says he's happy with the responsibility he's taking on.
Man of the Match, David Miller, says he didn't expect the game to go into the Super Over, but is happy his team came out on the right side of the result. States that they weren't prepared for this scenario, but is pleased they got the job done. Adds that his and Rassie van der Dussen's partnership was going well, but both lost their wickets in quick succession which wasn't good and that's something they can learn from. On the Super Over, he mentions that they felt that 10 runs would be enough based on the surface, and that they got more was really good.
Sri Lanka captain, Lasith Malinga, says T20 is an interesting format. Adds that they couldn't get across the line but they tried their best. Reckons that 134 isn't enough in this format, so they tried out different plans but it just didn't work out in the end. States that he's happy with his own performance, he likes the challenge as he can show what he can still do. Still stresses that they'd have liked to win the match. Feels that David Miller played really well and applauds his display with the bat. Says that anything can happen if you keep fighting on every single ball. Ends by saying that he wants his team to continue doing so and give it their all.
18 runs were needed in the last 4 overs, but Malinga and Udana both bowled brilliantly in the death and picked up important wickets, bringing the match to a tie. It went down to the Super Over, where South Africa scored 14 off the Lankan captain, but the visitors couldn't match it as Imran Tahir was simply astounding. Don't go anywhere, as the presentation is about to come up...
What a match, folks! How can you not be romantic about cricket? After how the first innings ended, with Sri Lanka only finishing with 134, that too after a repairing knock from Kamindu Mendis, you'd have thought the Proteas would have clinched this. They lost a few early wickets, but Miller and van der Dussen's stunning partnership turned the tide back in their favour.
Tahir has held his nerves, he has defended 14 in the Super Over. Top, top stuff from the champion bowler. Forget 14, 5 runs is what he conceded in it. Excellent execution from the veteran leg spinner. He kept it tight, teased the batsmen too with the flight, was brave and got the rewards for it.
Ball 6: Tahir to Thisara Perera, 1 run, Outside the line of off stump, Thisara hits it over covers and takes a single. It's not enough and South Africa have won this game.
Ball 6: Tahir to Thisara Perera, Wide, Another one well outside off and across the tramline, Thisara leaves it alone and it's signalled as a wide.
Ball 5: Tahir to Thisara Perera, No run, Beaten! The quicker googly outside off, Thisara plays at it and misses.
Ball 5: Tahir to Thisara Perera, Wide, Fired well outside off, it goes across the tramline and it's signalled as a wide.
Ball 4: Tahir to Fernando, 1 run, DROPPED! Steyn misses a sitter. Tossed up from the leggie, Fernando mistimes the hit towards Steyn at mid off. He spills it and the batsmen cross over.
Ball 3: Tahir to Fernando, No run, Another dot. Tahir gives it air again and lands it full on middle and off, it spins away as Fernando looks to go big on the leg side but misses.
Ball 2: Tahir to Fernando, No run, Short and flat outside off, spinning away slightly, Fernando throws his bat at it but misses. Dot ball.
Ball 1: Tahir to Thisara Perera, 1 run, Flat and quick on leg, Thisara slogs it to deep mid-wicket for a single.
South Africa have managed to score 14 from the 6 balls they faced. Just two came from the first two deliveries but then Miller hit one out of the park and then a boundary. It is not going to be easy for the Lankans now but with only six balls, you can't rule them out. Also, if this ends up in a tie, meaning if Sri Lanka also score 14 runs, then South Africa will win based on a superior boundary count. Avishka Fernando and Thisara Perera walk out to the middle. Imran Tahir will take the ball for South Africa.
Ball 6: Malinga to Miller, 2 runs, Miller drives this full length ball on the stumps to long on and comes back for the second. 14 runs off the Super Over.
Ball 5: Malinga to Miller, FOUR, Excellent stuff from David Miller. Full and just around off, Miller drills it through the gap in the covers and finds the fence.
Ball 4: Malinga to Miller, No run, Slower full toss outside off, a bit high too but not high enough, Miller throws his bat at it but fails to make connection.
Ball 3: Malinga to Miller, SIX, Miller whacks it out of the park! Length ball on the stumps, Miller swings across the line and nails the slog over mid-wicket for a maximum.
Ball 2: Malinga to van der Dussen, 1 run, On a length again on off, van der Dussen works it through mid-wicket for one. Wanted the second but didn't get it.
Ball 1: Malinga to Miller, 1 run, Length ball around off, Miller cuts it wide of point and takes a single.
It is South Africa now who will bat first. David Miller and Rassie van der Dussen to bat first. Lasith Malinga to bowl the Super Over.
WHAT A GAME THIS IS TURNING OUT TO BE! It seemed as the South Africans were going to cruise home when they needed 18 in the last four overs with 7 wickets in hand. That though is when the game changed. Malinga bowled a two-run over. Got the wicket of Rassie in that and Miller was also run out. Phehlukwayo then came out and threw it away. Rabada wasted a few and then got knocked over. 5 was needed in the last over and with Duminy being run out on the penultimate ball. The South Africans needed 2 in 1 with Tahir on strike. The hosts managed to steal a single to take it into the Super Over.
Isuru Udana to Imran Tahir. MATCH TIED! WE WILL HAVE A SUPER OVER! The scenes here at the Newlands. This match has been tied. Wow. Dickwella could have finished it had he hit the stumps but he missed. Length ball around off, Tahir gets an inside edge as the ball goes behind. Dickwella is closer to the sticks, has a shy at them but misses all three. The single is taken.
Isuru Udana to JP Duminy. OUT! DUMINY IS RUN OUT! Sri Lanka, Sri Lanka... have you done it? Oh, boy! This doesn't look good at all for the home side. Duminy works through square leg and comes back for the second even when it isn't on. The throw comes in from the deep and the keeper does the rest with ease. JP was hoping for a mistake from the fielder, but that never happened. Anything can happen now. Which team will take the victory home? Or will we have a Super Over?
Isuru Udana to Dale Steyn. Gets the single this time. Steyn gets a single and says 'over to you, JP'. Slogs it through to deep mid-wicket and gets off strike.
Isuru Udana to Dale Steyn. Udana following in Malinga's footsteps. One more slower delivery, on a back of a length, Steyn swings across the line again but misses and the ball goes over the stumps.
Isuru Udana to Dale Steyn. Beaten! Crucial dot ball. Slower length ball around off, the cutter and it goes away, Steyn looks to whack it across the line but is into the shot too early.
Isuru Udana to JP Duminy. Slower length ball on off stump, from around the wicket, Duminy helps the pull to deep square leg. Wants the second but will have to settle with just the one.
Lasith Malinga to Kagiso Rabada. OUT! Bowled! A wicket and just 1 run off it. Exceptional stuff from Lasith Malinga, upto 96 wickets in T20Is. Another slower one, but full and in line of the stumps this time, Rabada clears his front leg and tries to bang it down the ground. Misses and the stumps are disturbed. 5 runs needed off the final over.
Lasith Malinga to Kagiso Rabada. What a fantastic over so far. Fantastic. Cleverly disguises the slower ball again, wide outside off. Rabada is too early into the shot and misses it completely.
Lasith Malinga to Kagiso Rabada. Another dot. Just 1 run off 4 balls so far. The slower one again, fuller on the stumps, Rabada works it to the left of the bowler. Wants the run but has to come back as Malinga gets to the ball quickly.
Lasith Malinga to Kagiso Rabada. Play and a miss from Rabada. Full delivery well outside off, Rabada pushes away from his body and gets beaten past the outside edge.
Lasith Malinga to JP Duminy. Full and outside off, it's pushed past point and a single is collected. 5 to win off 10.
Lasith Malinga to JP Duminy. Dot ball. Cleverly bowls the slower one on middle and leg, Duminy stays behind the line and defends it back in the bowler's direction.
