South Africa vs Sri Lanka Highlights And Cricket Score 2nd Match - ODI Commentary

End of Over : 45.1 SA: 251/10

So then, 252 to win and level the series. The bowlers have done well to give their team a chance. Up to the Sri Lankan batsmen to do their job. South Africa do have a good bowling attack and 250-plus scores are always tricky. What will happen? Join us in a while to find out, exciting stuff coming up...

Thisara Perera says as a bowling unit they did well. Reckons they came back really strong after it looked like South Africa will score over 300. Says that as bowlers they needed to bowl right areas and feels they did so after a point of time. States he has done his job as an all-rounder. Informs there is some extra bounce on the pitch and feels that they need to attack at the start but also keep wickets in the first 10 overs. Is confident because they have talented players in the squad and hopes they can continue their good performance. On his 150th ODI cap, Thisara Perera says that he feels honoured to have achieved this feat.

On the bowling front, Thisara Perera was the star as he picked up 3 wickets. The rest of the bowlers were decent as well, except for Vishwa Fernando who got the stick today. He managed to pick up a wicket though but in the end, the away side will be happy with the way their bowlers bounced back. Meanwhile, Thisara Perera is down for a chat by the sidelines.

South Africa could not build significant partnerships after losing de Kock. Faf du Plessis did go on to bring up his 32nd ODI fifty but saw wickets fall at the other end. At 220/4 when du Plessis and David Miller were batting, there was still 300 on the cards but once the skipper and the hard-hitting Miller fell, all hopes were lost. The tail could not wag and South Africa lost their last 6 wickets for just 31 runs. Lost their way and gave Sri Lanka a really achievable target in the game.

What a comeback this has been from the away side! At one stage, the hosts were looking at a score of 350-plus, especially when the skipper, Faf du Plessis and Quinton de Kock were batting. From 131/1 they lost their next 9 wickets and got bowled out for 251 without even batting out the entire 50 overs. Criminal from the Proteas. If one might ask where Sri Lanka came back into the game, it would have to be the wicket of De Kock. Quinton along with his opening partner, Hendricks had got off their side to a beautiful start with the former looking particularly impressive. Once Reeza departed after the opening stand of 91, Faf joined the SA keeper-batsman in the middle and De Kock kept the runs coming. He was looking set for a 100 after ages in ODIs but he top-edged one and fell for 94 to Thisara Perera.

45.1 W

Akila Dananjaya to Lungi Ngidi. OUT! No, Ngidi's back leg is in the air. That will be it for South Africa, bowled out for 251! Flighted full ball on off, spinning away, Lungi stretches forward in an attempt to heave it over the leg side but misses the ball completely. Dickwella wastes no time in taking the bails off. He appeals and the square leg umpire goes upstairs. The replays roll in and it confirms that Ngidi is stumped.

Stumping appeal. It has been referred upstairs. Ngidi looks quite confident. Let's see...

End of Over : 45 3 Runs SA: 251/9
44.6 0

Lasith Malinga to Imran Tahir. The batsman has pushed it to the cover region. No run to end the over.

44.5 0

Lasith Malinga to Imran Tahir. A slower yorker, Malinga putting all his variations on display. Tahir though is quite stubborn as he digs it out safely.

44.4 1

Lasith Malinga to Lungi Ngidi. This one is a slower one around off, Ngidi tries defending but it takes the outside edge and runs down to third man for a run.

44.3 1

Lasith Malinga to Imran Tahir. Direct hit would have been curtains for Imran Tahir. Malinga goes for another yorker but it turns out to be a full toss. Tahir pushes it to mid off and runs across for an impossible single. Akila Dananjaya misses his shy at the non-striker's end and Tahir survives. Should be aiming the base of the stumps. 250 up for South Africa.

Imran Tahir is the last man to the crease.

44.2 W

Lasith Malinga to Anrich Nortje. OUT! Malinga-special! A lethal toe-crusher, right in the line of the stumps. Too quick for Nortje. He tries to dig it out but his bat comes down late. Hit right in front of the sticks and the umpire raises his finger immediately after the lbw appeal is made. Malinga is all smiles, his second wicket this evening.

44.1 1

Lasith Malinga to Lungi Ngidi. In the air... safe! A slower one, on a fuller length around middle and leg, Ngidi fails to pick and is early into his shot. Ends up chipping it over wide mid on and they cross for a run.

Akila Dananjaya to Anrich Nortje. Anrich has played that off the front foot and into the ground.

43.4 0

Akila Dananjaya to Anrich Nortje. NOT OUT! He cannot be given out as it stuck his gloves on its way. The ball pitches and comes back into the batsman. Nortje brings out the reverse sweep but he misses. The Sri Lankan players ask the question but Aleem Dar turns it down. They go upstairs and the replays show that it flicked his right glove then the arm and then the chest. Sri Lanka lose their review but they won't mind that at this stage.

Review time! There was an appeal for LBW against Nortje but the umpire has given it as not out. Malinga takes it upstairs. Looked pretty adjacent to the naked eye. Let's see what the replays have to say.

42.2 0

Lasith Malinga to Anrich Nortje. Loud appeal for caught behind but turned down! Looks a good decision. A length ball outside off, Anrich Nortje looks to defend the ball but gets beaten. 42.1 0

39.5 0

Dhananjaya de Silva to Anrich Nortje. Full and floated on off, Nortje defends it by getting on the front foot.

Anrich Nortje walks in at number 9. A slip in place for him as well.

Miller advances down the track to play the flick shot but gets beaten due to the little away spin. Dickwella is quick to take the bails off and now only the tail is left for the Proteas. A short and quicker ball outside off, Phehlukwayo rocks back and looks to cut it, but the ball goes off the outside half and lobs towards point. Avishka takes a step or two back and takes an easy catch. Around 12 overs left now and another wicket could really mean that the Proteas could be in risk of being bowled out without finishing their quota of 50 overs. Drinks break! The Sri Lankans have clawed their way back into the game with wickets at decent intervals. They will hope to continue picking them up, especially those of Faf du Plessis and David Miller. If they do, they can look to restrict SA to an under-par score with not much batting to follow. As for the hosts, they will look for a partnership between the two who are at the crease now. 300 should be the minimum they should get from here. Will they? Meanwhile, Dhananjaya de Silva to bowl after the break.

Vishwa Fernando to Quinton de Kock. FOUR! Two in two and this was even more classy. A tad fuller than the previous ball, de Kock leans into the drive and puts it in the gap between point and cover. No stopping those once it beats the infield.

1.2 4

Vishwa Fernando to Quinton de Kock. FOUR! The first boundary of the day! A length ball and well outside off, Quinton de Kock reaches out and smashes it wide of point. Third man cannot come around in time to stop the ball.

1.1 0

Vishwa Fernando to Quinton de Kock. Fuller in length straightaway, looking for some movement. De Kock though comes ahead and drives the ball to point before it could shape away.

Lasith Malinga to Reeza Hendricks. Good end to the over from Malinga! Bowls this on a length and just outside off, RH plays inside the line and gets beaten. Could have easily edged that to slip.

0.5 0

Lasith Malinga to Reeza Hendricks. Well outside off, no shot offered by the batsman.

0.4 0

Lasith Malinga to Reeza Hendricks. Short of a length outside off, looks like that one stuck in the surface and went slower than expected to the batsman. Hendricks defends it calmly onto the surface though.

0.3 0

Lasith Malinga to Reeza Hendricks. Outside off on a length, pushed to the covers.

0.2 0

Lasith Malinga to Reeza Hendricks. On the money to the right-hander, landing on a length in the middle stump line. Some away movement there but Reeza covers the line of the ball and defends it.

0.1 1

Lasith Malinga to Quinton de Kock. Around the wicket to begin, a good length ball from Malinga and it comes in with the angle after landing outside off. A hint of swing there but de Kock does well to dab it wide of slip for a single. Nice ball from Lasith though!

The Sri Lankan fielders are taking their positions now. Quinton de Kock and Reeza Hendricks will open for the hosts. Lasith Malinga with the first new ball in hand. A slip in place, all in readiness! Let's play...

Both the teams are walking out to the middle along with the mascots. They line up for both countries' national anthems.

TOSS - Sri Lanka win the toss and elect to bowl first. The visitors have two changes, Kasun Rajitha and Avishka Fernando come in for Lakshan Sandakan and Upul Tharanga. The hosts on the other hand, have a solitary change which sees Andile Phehlukwayo come in place of Dwaine Pretorius.

After sweeping aside the visitors in the first ODI, South Africa welcome the Lankans to the SuperSport Park in Centurion. The Proteas looked a completely different unit from the ones that were beaten in the red-ball format. Surely, they would not be looking to change much and there is no reason for them to either. Sri Lanka on the other hand, will have to look to do something about their lower middle order which just seems invisible. They will also need some changes in their bowling, that was too easily dealt with by the hosts in the first game. Can Lasith Malinga and team do things differently and bring the series back to level? On a good surface and in a day-night game, the toss will surely matter. Stay tuned for it!

End of Over : 32.2 SL: 138/10

That's it from this match. Johannesburg done. Centurion done. The action moves to Durban now where the third ODI will be played. Do join us at 1000 local (0800 GMT) for all the action. Cheers!

Faf du Plessis says that it was a perfect game for them. Adds that they probably would have wanted 30-40 runs more but is all praise for the way they bowled and fielded. Lauds his pacers for bowling with great intent. On Ngidi, he replies that he hits the deck hard and always provides the initial breakthroughs. Has a word of praise for Nortje as well and says that he bowled a long spell and showed good control over his line along with high pace. On his own batting form, he mentions that it's about transition from a good player to a great player and the biggest change is in his mindset. On being 2-0 up in the series, Faf replies that they are looking ahead and would like to try a few things regarding the team composition. Hints that Dale Steyn might come back for the last two games.

Man of the Match, Quinton de Kock praises the pitch for playing good and is happy to provide a great start to the team. Adds that they try to play the ball and not the bowlers. They just try to play the ball on merit, de Kock further adds. On his pacers bowling fire, de Kock replies that KG came out with great intent and cranked it up. Smiles and says that he gave a chance to Miller to keep and he has been working with him on his keeping.

Lasith Malinga (on 31/6) says that they hung in there well by varying their lines and lengths and considers it a really good effort from the bowlers. Adds that the batsmen need to understand their value. For the next match, Malinga replies that the players need to realize that this opportunity won't come every day and they will have to value it.

Earlier on in the evening, South Africa were off to a brilliant start after being put in to bat. They though did not capitalize and after being 220/4 at one stage, ended up at 251. Quinton de Kock and Faf du Plessis both made half-tons but the former was especially in top form today. He would be disappointed that he missed out on the ton but happy that the team won despite them ending up with a par score. Presentations to follow...

Oshada departed soon too and from there on, wickets fell at quick intervals. The only hope was from Thisara Perera but he too failed as the away side folded for 138 runs. A disappointing batting show from the Lankans. In fact there was not a single 50-run stand in the innings for the away side. A superb bowling performance from the home side though, every bowler who bowled except Wiaan Mulder got at least 2 wickets. Kagiso Rabada, especially was exceptional. He picked up 3 wickets and the SL batsmen found him too hot to handle. Thus, a mix of poor batting and good bowling has seen the win go in the favor of South Africa.

The hosts have won this game by a huge margin and how. Despite having just a par total on the board, the Proteas' bowlers have crushed this Sri Lankan reply and ensured a 2-0 lead in the 5-match series. Starting off with not much required, the away side did not plan their chase well. Rash shots from the openers and the top order saw them go on the back foot. That was mainly due to the fiery spell from Kagiso Rabada and Lungi Ngidi with the new balls. Three wickets were lost around the 10th over mark and from there, it was always going to be difficult for the Lankans to come back in the game. Oshada Fernando and Kusal Mendis were stitching a partnership and it looked like the boys from the Emerald Isle were in with a chance, but a moment of madness saw the game go further into the hosts' grasp as Mendis was run out.

32.2 W

Lungi Ngidi to Lasith Malinga. OUT! All over! SOUTH AFRICA WIN BY 113 RUNS! But all he manages is to hit it aerially from the toe end of his bat and straight into the hands of Steyn (sub) at covers. The South African players are ecstatic and the crowd is also very happy. Time for the customary handshakes.

32.1 1

Lungi Ngidi to Vishwa Fernando. Edged! Good length delivery outside off, Fernando flashes his bat at it and edges it down to third man for a run.

29.5 W

Imran Tahir to Kasun Rajitha. OUT! There goes the Imran-train again! Rajitha is a one-ball visitor. Tahir bowls the zooter to the tail-ender. A shortish length ball on the middle and leg stump line, at 145 clicks. Perera wants to pat it down on the leg side but closes the face of the bat early. Is surprised by the pace and extra zip on that one as the ball takes the leading edge and lobs towards cover-point. Miller runs across to his left from point and takes a good catch. Faf du Plessis was running to the right as well but does well to stay out of the way of Miller. South Africa surely have a stronghold in the game now!

Powerplay 2 has been signalled by the umpire. Now a maximum of 4 fielders can be outside the 30-yard circle till the 40th over. Anrich Nortje has also been introduced into the attack.

It goes on to knock top of off stump. The perfect ball! South Africa are pumped up here! This is absolutely unneeded from Sri Lanka though. The target is not such a big one and such rash shots are not needed. Playing across the line was a bad idea against the new ball and it has proved costly here. Sri Lanka need 223 runs more in 269 balls.

2.5 6

Kagiso Rabada to Avishka Fernando. SIX! Another top edge but this time it has gone all the way! A length ball on middle and leg, Fernando wants to go for the pull but is not in control off the shot. The pace on the ball though takes it over the rope behind the keeper.

2.4 0

Kagiso Rabada to Avishka Fernando. On a length and pushed towards the mid on region by Avishka.

Kusal Perera walks out to bat at number 3.

2.3 W

Kagiso Rabada to Niroshan Dickwella. OUT! The first one is gone! This is Rabada's 100th wicket in ODIs, the third quickest to reach this landmark for South Africa after Imran Tahir and Morne Morkel. A short of a length ball on middle, Dickwella looks to heave it away on the leg side. But he gets a top edge and the ball goes miles in the air. 0.2 1

Kagiso Rabada to Niroshan Dickwella. NOT OUT! He is in comfortably. A short of a length ball on the hips, Dickwella pats it towards mid-wicket and starts running. His partner is a little late to react and has to rush in the end. Miller there picks up the ball and hits the stumps at the keeper's end. The fielders appeal and the square leg umpire takes it up. The replays show Avishka is safe!

Run out appeal! Avishka could be out without facing a ball if he is short of the crease here. He does not look too worried though.

0.1 2

Kagiso Rabada to Niroshan Dickwella. On the hips, Dickwella turns it off towards square leg for a couple of runs. Niroshan off the mark straightaway.

We are back for the chase. 252 to get, should be a good 3 hours or so of cricket now. Trust South Africa to fight hard, while Sri Lanka if they bat well should reach the target. Niroshan Dickwella and Avishka Fernando to open for the visitors. Kagiso Rabada with the first new ball. The hosts will look for early wickets. All set and ready to go, let's play!!!
