Sri Lanka vs South Africa Highlights And Cricket Score 1st Match - T20I Commentary

End of Over : 20.0 SL: 134/7

The spoils were shared amongst everyone in the South African bowling unit. It was a collective performance, with everyone playing their part. Steyn and Rabada got the early breakthrough, then Sipamla got a wicket of his own, with Tahir terrorizing in the middle overs and Phehlukwayo taking care of business in the fag end. The Saffas will back themselves to chase this down. Let's see how it goes.

As things stand, South Africa will be pleased having won the toss and put the Lankan in to bat. They started off well, having picked up a couple of quick wickets, and then never let any of the batsmen settle. As soon as a partnership was threatening to form, a wicket fell and halted the momentum, bringing the tide back in the hosts' favour. Kamindu Mendis top scored with 41, while none of the rest even got to 20.

19.6 2

Kagiso Rabada to Isuru Udana. DROPPED and another couple! This will frustrate Rabada even more. On a length again on middle, Udana once again swings but it again takes the top edge. It goes uppishly towards Tahir at third man. He gets two hands to it but can't hang on. He straightaway apologizes. The batsmen take two and 13 from the last over. SRI LANKA END WITH 134!

19.5 2

Kagiso Rabada to Isuru Udana. Another couple! This one too falls in no man's land. Frustrating for Rabada. Slower ball and Udana looks to go downtown. Mistimes it but it goes on the bounce to long off. A couple taken. 11 from the over. A ball to go...

19.5 wd

Kagiso Rabada to Isuru Udana. Now a wide! Rabada goes short again but this one bounces over the batsman's head. Wided.

19.4 2

Kagiso Rabada to Isuru Udana. Another couple! This is proving to be a good last over for the visitors. A full toss on the pads, Udana flicks it through mid-wicket and takes two.

19.3 4

Kagiso Rabada to Isuru Udana. FOUR! Streaky but Lanka won't care as long as they come. Short and on middle, Udana goes for the pull but gets a top edge which goes over the keeper. Boundary. Vital runs these.

19.2 2

Kagiso Rabada to Isuru Udana. In the air... but short! Slower ball and outside off, Udana goes hard at it but only gets a top edge. It goes uppishly towards third man. The fielder there runs in but does not get to it. Does well to get his body in the way and keep it down to two.

Sri Lanka lose another wicket.

11.1 1

Andile Phehlukwayo to Kamindu Mendis. Kamindu Mendis survives! That was in the air for a while but inches wide of the fielder. He gave the charge, looked to clear covers but only got it as far as de Kock inside the ring. He moves to his right, dives but can't get to it in time. A single is taken.

Angelo Perera will bat next for Sri Lanka.

5.4 W

Lutho Sipamla to Avishka Fernando. OUT! In the air... and that has been taken excellently by Reeza Hendricks. The third one down in the Powerplay and not many teams win after losing three in the first six. A budding partnership comes to an end. Fernando goes for another hoick. This time though it is the slower one so he does not get it right off the middle. Goes uppishly towards deep square leg. Reeza there does very well to position himself just ahead of the ropes. He takes it but then realizes the momentum is taking him over the line. He tosses it up, goes out, comes in and then takes it. Kagiso Rabada to Kusal Mendis. OUT! Two wickets in as many overs for South Africa. Catching practice for Sipamla at mid on. Full and attacking the stumps, Mendis looks to clear the fielder but doesn't get under the ball at all. Hands a straightforward catch to Sipamla, who takes it by crouching low. Dale Steyn to Kusal Mendis. A lot of movement away as it lands on a length outside off, Mendis has nothing to do with it.

Kusal Mendis walks in at no.3.

0.2 W

Dale Steyn to Niroshan Dickwella. OUT! GONE! The Steyn Gun wastes no time in firing away! This isn't a great ball as such, thrown well outside off and fuller in length, Dickwella loosely goes after it and nicks it behind. David Miller behind the sticks today takes a simple catch. He'll be happy his first one is an easy one. Perfect start for the Saffas, an early breakthrough for them.

0.1 0

Dale Steyn to Niroshan Dickwella. Steyn kicks things off with a good length delivery just outside off. There's some decent shape on it as it moves away, Dickwella defends it off the outer half towards cover-point.

We are all set for the action to begin! Unlike the last ODI here, there seems to be no problem with the floodlight at the moment as the South African players make their way out to the middle. They are followed by the Lankan openers, Niroshan Dickwella and Avishka Fernando. Dale Steyn to start the proceedings for the hosts. Here we go...

Sri Lanka (Playing XI) - Niroshan Dickwella (WK), Avishka Fernando, Kusal Mendis, Dhananjaya de Silva, Angelo Perera, Thisara Perera, Kamindu Mendis, Isuru Udana, Akila Dananjaya, Lasith Malinga (C), Jeffrey Vandersay.

South Africa (Playing XI) - Quinton de Kock, Reeza Hendricks, Faf du Plessis (C), Rassie van der Dussen, David Miller (WK), JP Duminy, Andile Phehlukwayo, Kagiso Rabada, Dale Steyn, Lutho Sipamla, Imran Tahir.

Toss - South Africa win the toss and they elect to bowl first.

It is one a piece in the tour so far. The Test series was won by the Lankans and the ODI by the hosts. It is now time for the T20I series with the first match kicking off in Cape Town. Both the teams will be eager to win the first game. The hosts have momentum on their side and are firm favorites to come out victorious. Will there be an upset? Welcome to the coverage.

End of Over : 20.0 SA: 134/8

After quite a one-sided One-Day series, we needed a thriller to shake things up and we got exactly that. South Africa have taken a 1-0 lead in the series which has two more matches to go. Let us hope that the second game will be as exciting as this one. Do join us for that at 1800 local (1600 GMT). Till then, goodbye and take care!

South Africa captain, Faf du Plessis, says this game was great fun. Feels that his side needed something like this as it tested all the players' character and resolve. On David Miller as wicket-keeper, he says that they just wanted to explore their options and is quite pleased it come off well. Opines that they bowled really well but is surprised with the surface and reckons that in hindsight it wasn't such a good decision to bat second. Praises Lasith Malinga for his outstanding bowling display and mentions that his team can learn a lot from this. On Andile Phehlukwayo (that his middle name is Lucky), Faf chuckles and says that he's never lucky, but then goes on to state that it's his bravery which is his biggest asset. Continues to praise him and says he's happy with the responsibility he's taking on.

Man of the Match, David Miller, says he didn't expect the game to go into the Super Over, but is happy his team came out on the right side of the result. States that they weren't prepared for this scenario, but is pleased they got the job done. Adds that his and Rassie van der Dussen's partnership was going well, but both lost their wickets in quick succession which wasn't good and that's something they can learn from. On the Super Over, he mentions that they felt that 10 runs would be enough based on the surface, and that they got more was really good.

Sri Lanka captain, Lasith Malinga, says T20 is an interesting format. Adds that they couldn't get across the line but they tried their best. Reckons that 134 isn't enough in this format, so they tried out different plans but it just didn't work out in the end. States that he's happy with his own performance, he likes the challenge as he can show what he can still do. Still stresses that they'd have liked to win the match. Feels that David Miller played really well and applauds his display with the bat. Says that anything can happen if you keep fighting on every single ball. Ends by saying that he wants his team to continue doing so and give it their all.

18 runs were needed in the last 4 overs, but Malinga and Udana both bowled brilliantly in the death and picked up important wickets, bringing the match to a tie. It went down to the Super Over, where South Africa scored 14 off the Lankan captain, but the visitors couldn't match it as Imran Tahir was simply astounding. Don't go anywhere, as the presentation is about to come up...

What a match, folks! How can you not be romantic about cricket? After how the first innings ended, with Sri Lanka only finishing with 134, that too after a repairing knock from Kamindu Mendis, you'd have thought the Proteas would have clinched this. They lost a few early wickets, but Miller and van der Dussen's stunning partnership turned the tide back in their favour.

Tahir has held his nerves, he has defended 14 in the Super Over. Top, top stuff from the champion bowler. Forget 14, 5 runs is what he conceded in it. Excellent execution from the veteran leg spinner. He kept it tight, teased the batsmen too with the flight, was brave and got the rewards for it.

Ball 6: Tahir to Thisara Perera, 1 run, Outside the line of off stump, Thisara hits it over covers and takes a single. It's not enough and South Africa have won this game.

Ball 6: Tahir to Thisara Perera, Wide, Another one well outside off and across the tramline, Thisara leaves it alone and it's signalled as a wide.

Ball 5: Tahir to Thisara Perera, No run, Beaten! The quicker googly outside off, Thisara plays at it and misses.

Ball 5: Tahir to Thisara Perera, Wide, Fired well outside off, it goes across the tramline and it's signalled as a wide.

Ball 4: Tahir to Fernando, 1 run, DROPPED! Steyn misses a sitter. Tossed up from the leggie, Fernando mistimes the hit towards Steyn at mid off. He spills it and the batsmen cross over.

Ball 3: Tahir to Fernando, No run, Another dot. Tahir gives it air again and lands it full on middle and off, it spins away as Fernando looks to go big on the leg side but misses.

Ball 2: Tahir to Fernando, No run, Short and flat outside off, spinning away slightly, Fernando throws his bat at it but misses. Dot ball.

Ball 1: Tahir to Thisara Perera, 1 run, Flat and quick on leg, Thisara slogs it to deep mid-wicket for a single.

South Africa have managed to score 14 from the 6 balls they faced. Just two came from the first two deliveries but then Miller hit one out of the park and then a boundary. It is not going to be easy for the Lankans now but with only six balls, you can't rule them out. Also, if this ends up in a tie, meaning if Sri Lanka also score 14 runs, then South Africa will win based on a superior boundary count. Avishka Fernando and Thisara Perera walk out to the middle. Imran Tahir will take the ball for South Africa.

Ball 6: Malinga to Miller, 2 runs, Miller drives this full length ball on the stumps to long on and comes back for the second. 14 runs off the Super Over.

Ball 5: Malinga to Miller, FOUR, Excellent stuff from David Miller. Full and just around off, Miller drills it through the gap in the covers and finds the fence.

Ball 4: Malinga to Miller, No run, Slower full toss outside off, a bit high too but not high enough, Miller throws his bat at it but fails to make connection.

Ball 3: Malinga to Miller, SIX, Miller whacks it out of the park! Length ball on the stumps, Miller swings across the line and nails the slog over mid-wicket for a maximum.

Ball 2: Malinga to van der Dussen, 1 run, On a length again on off, van der Dussen works it through mid-wicket for one. Wanted the second but didn't get it.

Ball 1: Malinga to Miller, 1 run, Length ball around off, Miller cuts it wide of point and takes a single.

It is South Africa now who will bat first. David Miller and Rassie van der Dussen to bat first. Lasith Malinga to bowl the Super Over.

WHAT A GAME THIS IS TURNING OUT TO BE! It seemed as the South Africans were going to cruise home when they needed 18 in the last four overs with 7 wickets in hand. That though is when the game changed. Malinga bowled a two-run over. Got the wicket of Rassie in that and Miller was also run out. Phehlukwayo then came out and threw it away. Rabada wasted a few and then got knocked over. 5 was needed in the last over and with Duminy being run out on the penultimate ball. The South Africans needed 2 in 1 with Tahir on strike. The hosts managed to steal a single to take it into the Super Over.

19.6 1

Isuru Udana to Imran Tahir. MATCH TIED! WE WILL HAVE A SUPER OVER! The scenes here at the Newlands. This match has been tied. Wow. Dickwella could have finished it had he hit the stumps but he missed. Length ball around off, Tahir gets an inside edge as the ball goes behind. Dickwella is closer to the sticks, has a shy at them but misses all three. The single is taken.

Imran Tahir walks in next. 2 required to win off 1 ball.

19.5 W

Isuru Udana to JP Duminy. OUT! DUMINY IS RUN OUT! Sri Lanka, Sri Lanka... have you done it? Oh, boy! This doesn't look good at all for the home side. Duminy works through square leg and comes back for the second even when it isn't on. The throw comes in from the deep and the keeper does the rest with ease. JP was hoping for a mistake from the fielder, but that never happened. Anything can happen now. Which team will take the victory home? Or will we have a Super Over?

19.4 1

Isuru Udana to Dale Steyn. Gets the single this time. Steyn gets a single and says 'over to you, JP'. Slogs it through to deep mid-wicket and gets off strike.

19.3 0

Isuru Udana to Dale Steyn. Udana following in Malinga's footsteps. One more slower delivery, on a back of a length, Steyn swings across the line again but misses and the ball goes over the stumps.

19.2 0

19.1 1

Isuru Udana to JP Duminy. Slower length ball on off stump, from around the wicket, Duminy helps the pull to deep square leg. Wants the second but will have to settle with just the one.

Dale Steyn is next in to bat but he won't be on strike. Also, Isuru Udana to bowl the last over of the game.

End of Over : 19 1 Runs SA: 130/7
18.6 W

Lasith Malinga to Kagiso Rabada. OUT! Bowled! A wicket and just 1 run off it. Exceptional stuff from Lasith Malinga, upto 96 wickets in T20Is. Misses and the stumps are disturbed. 5 runs needed off the final over.

18.4 0

Lasith Malinga to Kagiso Rabada. Another dot. Just 1 run off 4 balls so far. The slower one again, fuller on the stumps, Rabada works it to the left of the bowler. Wants the run but has to come back as Malinga gets to the ball quickly.

Kagiso Rabada in next.

17.5 W

Dhananjaya de Silva to Andile Phehlukwayo. OUT! No need for that shot at all. Already 9 runs came off the over, absolutely no need. He'll be disappointed with that. Phehlukwayo gives the charge and looks to go big downtown. Skies it to Udana at long off who settles under it and takes it well.

17.4 4

Dhananjaya de Silva to Andile Phehlukwayo. FOUR! Brings out the reverse sweep and nails the shot to perfection. Quite full on the stumps, Phehlukwayo places it through backward point and finds the fence.

17.3 0

End of Over : 17 2 Runs SA: 119/5
16.6 0

Lasith Malinga to Andile Phehlukwayo. Length ball on off, patted to covers to end the over. Still 16 needed to win off 18 balls.

Andile Phehlukwayo is out now to bat.

16.5 W

Lasith Malinga to David Miller. OUT! This is a massive wicket. The in-form David Miller is out of here. This is a risky run. He works this through square leg and takes off. Quickly calls for the second and rushes back. The throw comes in from the deep and Mendis is accurate as he finds the keeper to perfection. Dickwella takes the bails off as Miller dives in. It's taken upstairs and replays show Miller is short.

This could be the turning point in the game. David Miller is at the danger end and the Lankans think he's gone. Let's see now...

16.4 0

Lasith Malinga to David Miller. Angling across from outside off, Miller plays and misses.

JP Duminy is the new man in.

16.3 W

Lasith Malinga to Rassie van der Dussen. OUT! Malinga strikes! His 95th wicket in T20I cricket. Rassie van der Dussen departs. Could Sri Lanka still be in with a chance? Just behind a length around off, van der Dussen shimmies down and tries to go across the line. Gets a top edge and it lobs down to third man. Udana there runs inside, dives forward and takes a safe catch.

16.2 0

Lasith Malinga to Rassie van der Dussen. Loud appeal from the Lankan captain for a leg before, but it seemed to be going down leg. Height could be a factor as well. The cutter on middle and leg, catches van der Dussen on the back thigh pad as he attempts to work it across the line.

16.1 1

Lasith Malinga to David Miller. Length delivery on leg stump, it's worked off the pads down to fine leg for one.

End of Over : 16 14 Runs SA: 117/3
15.6 4

Akila Dananjaya to Rassie van der Dussen. FOUR! 14 off his last over. Before this, Akila gave away 14 in his first 3 overs. This is a good delivery, it spins away sharply from a shorter length around off, Rassie plays at it and edges it down to third man for a boundary. South Africa need 18 to win off 24 balls.

15.5 6

Akila Dananjaya to Rassie van der Dussen. SIX! Right in the slot and away it goes! Super shot from Rassie van der Dussen. This is his first boundary of the innings. Tossed up, van der Dussen kneels down and slog sweeps it over mid-wicket for half a dozen.

15.4 1

Akila Dananjaya to David Miller. Leans into the tossed up delivery and eases it through to long off. The batsmen take one.

15.3 1

Akila Dananjaya to Rassie van der Dussen. Outside off with room on offer, van der Dussen cuts it toward short third man and crosses over.

15.2 1

Akila Dananjaya to David Miller. Too full from around the wicket, on off stump, Miller gets low, plays the reverse sweep wide enough of short third man and pinches a quick run.

15.1 1

Akila Dananjaya to Rassie van der Dussen. Short and flat outside off, it's punched through the off side for a single.

Akila Dananjaya called back on.

End of Over : 15 20 Runs SA: 103/3
14.6 2

Isuru Udana to David Miller. Brace to end the over. Bowls it on the pads again, Miller works it fine on the leg side and comes back for the second. 20 runs from this over. Massive one for South Africa. 32 runs to get from the last 5 overs. Can Sri Lanka make a comeback from here?

14.5 6

Isuru Udana to David Miller. SIX! Biggie! When its in the arc, it's out of the park! Changes line on this one, Miller was quick to read that so moves out this time and lofts it high and handsome over covers for a maximum. The fielder in the deep was no where in the sight.

14.4 4

Isuru Udana to David Miller. FOUR! Killer Miller is getting those runs for South Africa here. He reads the line early so goes across to this length ball on middle and clips it to the square leg region. The timing was so good that it raced away to the boundary.

14.1 4

Isuru Udana to David Miller. FOUR! PERFECTION! Bowls a full toss on off, Miller flicks it off his pads and finds the gap between deep mid-wicket and long on with perfection. The long on fielder was just short to get his hands on the ball.

12.4 2

Isuru Udana to Rassie van der Dussen. No, Miller is in! Sri Lanka looked excited but replays showed Miller was comfortably in here. Coming to the ball, it was pitched on middle and onto the pads, Rassie flicks it to deep mid-wicket and comes back for a second. The throw was on the non-striker's end where Udana deflects it off his hands and onto the stumps.

Is there another run out here? There is a direct hit at the non-striker's end. Miller does not seem tensed though.

5.4 0

Dhananjaya de Silva to Faf du Plessis. Stumping chance missed! Just can't afford that while defending such a low score. Faf uses his feet but ends up yorking himself. He looks to jam it out but fails to do so. Misses it. Dickwella fails to collect it and Faf then has enough time to come back in. How costly will this prove?

5.2 1
