It was Tim Southee who came to their rescue. He along with BJ Watling counter-attacked, the former especially. The pacer took on the Lankan bowlers and scored at will. He did have luck on his side but also played some excellent cricketing strokes. Watling on the other hand, was happy to play second fiddle. The two added 108 for the 7th wicket and they looked like they would take the game away from the visitors. However, a brilliant catch by Karunaratne to dismiss Southee and Lakmal's 5th sees the Lankans go back on top in the contest.

What an entertaining session of cricket we witnessed there. Sri Lanka still ahead in the game but not by much I feel. After heading into the post-Lunch session in deep trouble, they slipped further when they lost Taylor and de Grandhomme in quick succession. At that time, it seemed the Kiwis would struggle to get to 100 but that was not to be.

Boxing Day is here, actually it is a Super Boxing Day if you are a cricket fan as there are three Test matches starting today. We welcome you to the coverage of the second Test between Sri Lanka and New Zealand in Christchurch. A lot is at stake here as the team winning the game will take the series too. Both the sides will be eager to do so.

New Zealand have now got a good lead and they would now look to put in a better show with the bat. Sri Lanka on the other hand, need to take wickets and that too quickly if they are to get back in the game. Will we see the host continue their domination or will the visitors fight back.

Not a lot you can write about the Lankan batting. They could not cope against the swing and have been bowled out very cheaply in their first innings. Only three batsmen managed to score in double digits but none could make it big. Angelo Mathews fought hard but ran out of partners in the end.

An excellent bowling performance from the Kiwi pacers here! They did not post a big first innings score but their bowlers have led right from the front. It was Southee at the start who ran through the top order. De Grandhomme dismissed the hero of the last game and Boult this morning took the remaining 6 in the 5 overs bowled by him.

Well that escalated quickly! The Lankans have lost their last 6 wickets for just 16 runs which means, New Zealand have gained a decent lead of 74 runs and it is courtesy Tent Boult. He leads the team off the field and to a standing ovation. He deserves every bit of it. He has been exceptional today morning. He has taken all the six wickets to fall this morning and in very, very quick time.

Hello and welcome to Day 2 of the second Test between New Zealand and Sri Lanka in Christchurch. Day 1 saw both the teams on level terms. However, a couple of quick wickets, will see the Kiwis have the upper hand and that is exactly what Kane Williamson will be looking for. What can we expect on Day 2? The Kiwis will look to run through the middle and the lower order and gain some sort of a lead. The visitors, on the other hand, will hope the two batting out there can build a decent partnership and the ones to follow can also contribute after that. Earlier in the day, the Lankans won the toss and put the Kiwis in to bat. The decision turned out to be the right one as they had New Zealand on the mat at 64 for 6 but could not capitalize. However, an attacking Southee and a resurgent Watling added a 108-run stand and brought the Kiwis back into the contest. Lakmal's fifer though kept the Lankans on the front foot. But impressive bowling from the hosts' bowlers has seen Day 1 end even-stevens.

A day dominated by the bowlers is what we have witnessed today. A total of 14 wickets have fallen and the game is evenly poised at the end of Day 1. The last session saw the Lankans take the remaining two Kiwi wickets quickly. In reply, they lost their top three in quick succession. Mendis and Mathews then did try to steady the ship but a lapse in concentration saw the departure of the former. Mathews though is still battling out there and he along with Roshen Silva are amidst a 37-run stand and they have brought the lead down to 10 short of 100.

The Lankan bowlers did not look threatening at all. They did not receive any assistance from the wicket and they could not create any magic themselves. Lahiru Kumara bowled his heart out and he finished with a two-fer. The rest were quite inconsistent.

New Zealand entered their second innings with a lead of 74 and their openers then gave them the ideal stand with a 100-plus run stand. After Raval's dismissal, Latham continued and stitched two more handy stands with Williamson and Taylor. The opener went onto get his ton and with Nicholls built a massive partnership of 214. Henry too scored a century. Latham missed out on a double ton as he was dismissed just before Tea. Colin de Grandhomme post the break, smashed the bowlers to all parts of the ground, scored the fastest fifty by a Kiwi batsman in Tests, added a quickfire 124 run stand before Williamson declared.

New Zealand have finally DECLARED and they have set Sri Lanka a massive target of 660. A brilliant batting performance from the kiwis here. Yes, the wicket did ease out but take nothing away from the effort. All the batsmen contributed with two of them scoring daddy hundreds.

What will New Zealand be targeting? 550? 600? Not sure but they will be coming out all guns blazing after the break. Probably bat another 45 minutes or say an hour. Stay tuned as the last session can be an exciting one.

So the Kiwis continue to swell their lead which is now close to the 550 run mark. They did lose Latham just before Tea but don't think we will be seeing a declaration immediately. Once again it was all New Zealand in this session. Both Nicholls and Latham came out with an attacking approach. The two added a brilliant 214-run stand with the former getting to his ton and the latter eyeing another double hundred. That was not to be though as right at the stroke of Tea, Chameera got the opener, caught down the leg side.

The lead is already a huge one and with a lot of time left, the Kiwis won't be in any hurry to declare. They will bat for as long as possible and probably bat the Lankans out of the game. For Sri Lanka, they need wickets and quite a few of them quickly if they are to have some sort of a chance. The Lankan bowlers tried their all. There was absolutely no assistance for either of the pacers or the spinner. Dilruwan Perera and Lahiru Kumara picked a wicket each but the visitors' bowlers never looked threatening.

Then, with a lead of 74, the Kiwi openers provided them the ideal start. The two added 121-runs for the opening wicket with both scoring half tons. Jeet Raval departed but Latham continued with his skipper and added another 50-plus run stand. Williamson too was dismissed 2 short of a fifty but Taylor then, along with Latham ensured there were no more wickets to fall and the two ended the day with a lead of above 300.
