PITCH REPORT - Tino Mawoyo says it's still a batting paradise and the conditions haven't changed a lot. Adds there was some variable bounce on offer from the good length area yesterday and feels as the game progresses, the pacers will have their say.

Day 1 was all about the batters dictating terms. Everyone came in and had fun apart from Liton Das. The hosts are well on course to post a huge first innings total and they have Mominul Haque who is leading the way with an unbeaten 175. Sri Lanka would be looking to come out afresh and make the second new ball, which is just 60 balls old, count. Can Sri Lanka enforce a collapse from hereon? The Sri Lankans, after being made to toil hard, needed someone to lift them up again. The second new ball did the trick for them late in the day. It was Suranga Lakmal who struck twice in successive balls and importantly he broke the massive 236-run stand. Liton Das bagged a golden duck but Haque and Mahmudullah then did well to see off the remainder of the day. All the bowlers had a tough day at the office. Dilruwan Perera and Lakshan Sandakan got the first two wickets but then failed to make any impact. Lahiru Kumara was very inconsistent and went for aplenty. The wily spinner, too, didn't look penetrative enough and as a result they let Bangladesh dominate the day.

Mominul Haque walked out with other ideas. He stepped on the gas and accelerated as soon as he got into the groove to keep the visitors' bowlers at bay. Mushfiqur Rahim gave him perfect company as the pair toyed with and ripped the bowling apart. The pitch hardly had anything in it but it still required some batting to get runs. Both of them motored along at a healthy run rate and broke a few records in the process.

That ends the proceedings on the opening day of the Test. Bangladesh are the ones who take the honours as they make the most of winning the toss and electing to bat by posting a big total on the board. Mind you, they aren't done yet. It all started with Tamim Iqbal in the morning who came out with a lot intent. He blazed a quick fifty to give his team an ideal start. Imrul Kayes played well for his 40 but both the openers were sent back in the first session and it seemed like Sri Lanka have got the opening.

Rahim with no feet movement goes after this one. The ball bounces just a bit more, takes the outer half of the bat and settles into the mitts of Dickwella behind. The second new ball has done the trick for Sri Lanka. Rahim stands there in dismay as he misses out on a deserving ton. This is the third time in Tests that Rahim has been dismissed in the nervous nineties. Seemed like it was a lapse in concentration from the wicket-keeper batsman. Nonetheless, the 236-run stand has been broken.

... Day 1, Session 3 ...

It is imperative to know the right pace to bowl on a track and Sri Lanka have erred just there. Their spinners have been guilty of being a touch too short on a slow-paced track and have paid the price. In the first session, at least their pacers looked like picking up a wicket. In this one, no one seemed threatening. To say that all their bowlers looked flat, is an understatement. Will the final session see a change in the narrative? We'll be glad to have you with us shortly, as it gets unveiled.

Bangladesh's session without an ounce of doubt. They continued to run riot with the bat, a run rate of close to 4.50 an over shows just that. Mominul Haque brought up an attacking ton, his 5th in Tests, while Mushfiqur Rahim is three shy of his fifty. They are amidst an undefeated 130-run partnership and seem difficult to get dislodged from the crease. Both of them have matched each other stroke for stroke, although the former skipper has been watchful in his stint so far. The southpaw has been at his attacking best.

Nice point. Herath has gone at 5 runs an over in this innings so far. This is not the case in helpful conditions generally with the wily old spinner. Roshan Abeysinghe on air states that the Bangladeshi batters have countered him by making use of their feet, by making use of the sweep and cut shots to good effect. This has caught the veteran off guard and hence he has been ineffective so far.

Mominul Haque then walked in and continued the run-flow along with Kayes. They used their feet to good affect against the spinners but just towards the end when Sri Lanka managed to get one more over in, the hosts lost the latter. Sri Lanka will be happy by pulling things back and with the pitch having enough purchase for the spinners, it will be interesting to see if the home side still opts for the aggressive approach. The wicket of Imrul Kayes makes this session an even one. Bangladesh were up and running after winning the toss and opting to bat. Tamim Iqbal, in particular was off the blocks in a jiffy and it seemed like he is in the mood today. He raced his way to a blazing fifty to make the Lankan bowlers look clueless. However, Dilruwan Perera then came in and with some smart piece of bowling, drew first blood by knocking Iqbal out.

Dinesh Chandimal, the away skipper, says that the ODI series was a good one and would look to build on that although the format is different. Is aware of his side doing well in Tests in the past couple of series and would look to take inspiration and put in good performances. Reckons that the track is a dry one and they are going with 6 batters and 5 bowlers.

States that Shakib has been a gun player for them but he is hopeful of that they will turn up well without him. Opines that they would look to take inspiration from their previous good performances. PITCH REPORT - Tino Mawoyo says that it is a typical wicket at Chittagong, being very dry with a tinge of green. Observes that there are a lot of left-handers in the Lankan side and the left arm spinners should get purchase outside the off stump. Reckons that batting first and putting runs on the board should be the aim of the side winning the toss.

When two subcontinental teams clash in the subcontinent, it is hard to not expect a turning track. With a plethora of spinners in both teams, one knows on what lines the thinking has been. Almost all the Lankan batsmen made merry on the surface which is not like the one we see in the sub-continent. Daddy hundreds from Dhananjaya de Silva and Kusal Mendis set the tone for them as they amassed a record 308-run stand. After their departure, Roshen Silva and Dinesh Chandimal stepped in. The former helped himself to his maiden Test ton while his skipper missed out by 13 runs. They would believe that this is a session for them to bundle the tourists out. Out walk Dinesh Chandimal and Niroshan Dickwella with the bat. The track has shown enough today for us to suggest that it has woken up from the slumber that it had gone into for the past three days. Given the way things stand, the tourists will look to add another century of runs to their kitty before they let their spinners out at the hosts like mice from a sack. Join us back in a while, for what we believe, would be an intriguing session of Test cricket.

Bangladesh, for once, did the right thing by handing the ball to Mehidy Hasan at the start. Although not immediately, he did show what his side missed yesterday by not doing so. The deliveries bowled outside off spun in a mile to catch the well-set batters off guard. Although it was only after the first hour, that he succeeded in picking up a scalp, the seeds of doubt were sown well before. Taijul Islam, too, got good purchase from the surface and he should have been sitting with another victim to his list, had the sharp chance offered by Niroshan Dickwella in the penultimate over before Lunch been taken.

In spite of some action happening towards the end of this session, no soul on this land has a doubt about who is ahead at this point. There are roughs outside the area of the stumps on the track. If the bowlers landed it on those spots, the batters were beaten, appeals were put up, hands were raised from the bowlers only to quickly come down in despair. Amidst all this, Dinesh Chandimal has quietly accumulated runs, like a monk meditates calmly unmindful of all the raucous happening around. He is 13 short of the triple-figure mark. Roshen Silva showed a demeanour of a veteran to notch up his maiden Test ton. Ironically, it is just his second game in the longest format.

All this while, he was getting significant purchase when he was landing it outside off but not so if he ventured closer to the stumps. Perhaps he realised it late and as they say, better late than never. He bowls it flatter outside off on a shorter length, Silva goes back to cut it away. But the ball lands on the rough and goes straight on, taking the bottom edge on the way to the keeper. That culminates a good level-headed knock from Roshen Silva, thereby ending the 135-run association that he had with his skipper. His side is 37 runs ahead at this point. Another view could be, his wicket could be a blessing in disguise for Sri Lanka as he wasn't really looking like scoring quickly. The men to follow could take an aggressive approach here.

It's been a batting paradise at Chittagong that we have got to witness so far in the first three days. Gautam Bhimani and Roshan Abeysinghe have Dhananjaya de Silva with them for an interview. He says he backs his game, which is all about aggression. Adds Kusal Mendis' role was to rotate strike and that they both complimented each other really well. Further says he and Mendis spoke that all they need is to stand out there as the wicket isn't that difficult to bat on. Is disappointed to not get a double ton especially when he was so close. Feels if they manage to get a lead of around 150-200, they stand a real chance.

Roshen Silva then, along with his skipper, Dinesh Chandimal, continued the pattern. The former made the most of the opportunity given to him as he is all set to get a ton of his own. Importantly, for Sri Lanka they are just one short of 10 behind the hosts' first innings total. Bangladesh, well, they've been made to toil really hard on the field. Mind you, it's not over as yet. Their spinners are not able extract anything off the surface and whatever little that they did, the visitors managed to deal with it. The fact that they could only pick up two wickets today, should tell you the way they have got a beating at the hands of the Lankans.

Sri Lanka's day by a distance! Over 1000 runs being scored for the loss of just 13 wickets in three days, tells us that it was another day where the batsmen have dictated terms. It all started with the overnight duo of Kusal Mendis and Dhananjaya de Silva continuing from where they left off. They kept the hosts firmly on the back foot by bagging a wicketless morning session today. Both of them registered their career-best scores but sadly, departed just when they were nearing a double ton.
