Sri Lanka vs Australia Highlights And Cricket Score 1st Match - Test Commentary
Sri Lanka will be disappointed. That is an understatement. After surviving the opening hour, the batsmen simply threw it away and then the rest were not patient enough. Dickwella played some shots but that only lent some respectability to the total. The night session will provide plenty of movement, so the Lankan quicks will be hoping to get 4-5 wickets before Stumps. Stay tuned...
It was a total team effort from the Aussie quicks. They struggled with their lengths in the first hour of the morning, going too full, searching for swing when there was none, but then they hit their straps by adjusting well. Towards the end of the second session, they found some swing which was helpful, especially for Starc, who is going through a torrid period.
Just 6.4 overs needed for the Aussies after the Dinner break to dismantle the Lankan innings. A terrific bowling performance to say the least but what will please Australia is that the man guns - Starc, Cummins and Lyon did not have to do too much. Yes, Cummins did pick up 4 but the talk of the town will be the debutant Jhye Richardson, who rocked the middle order.
Pat Cummins to Dushmantha Chameera. OUT! Chameera is the last man dismissed. Cummins gets his 4th of the innings. Kurtis Patterson there takes his second catch in the same over. Dushmantha Chameera's resilient innings comes to an end. Scored no runs but gave plenty of support to Dickwella in their 38-run stand. SRI LANKA ARE BOWLED OUT FOR 144.

... Day 1, Session 3 ...
Australia will want to echo what Marcus Harris said and will wrap this up quickly. They will enjoy their supper for now. Join us after the break.
Neroli Meadows is having a chat with Marcus Harris. The southpaw is happy with the way things are going. States that the Australian team had discussed in the dressing room to bowl in the right areas and hope that they finish off the job after the break. On Jhye Richardson, he admits that Jhye was a bit nervous but with time those nerves settled down. On batting under lights, Marcus is not too perturbed and is eager to strut his stuff when the chance comes.
Starc has been better in his last spell. Got the ball in the right areas and earned his 200th Test wicket. The skipper will hope he cleans up the tail. Richardson has been marvelous. Ran through the middle order with Cummins and it won't be long before the hosts come out to bat.
Australia's session. By far. After taking three wickets in the first one they have come out and taken 5 in this period. Bowled at the right lengths and kept beating the outside edges of the Lankan players. Just a couple of batsmen got to the double figures and that speaks volumes. Dickwella is still out there and the Asian side will hope he adds as many runs as possible to give the bowlers something to bowl at.
Mitchell Starc to Dushmantha Chameera. Good length delivery outside off, Chameera looks to defend but gets beaten on this one. Big over for Sri Lanka. THAT IS DINNER ON DAY 1.

Mitchell Starc to Dushmantha Chameera. NOT OUT. Nothing on the Hawk Eye. Nothing on Snicko. My ears are ringing. Full and outside off, Chameera looked to defend but the ball whizzed past the outside edge. Paine was not all that confident but Starc pretty much was. However, umpire Erasmus was unmoved. The skipper went for the review as the slip cordon heard a noise(nice...at least someone else heard the noise apart from me) but to their dismay, technology did not assist them.
Australia have taken a review for caught behind. Paine and co. think Chameera has edged it. Let's find out.
Mitchell Starc to Dushmantha Chameera. Another edge but lucky this time. On a good length around off, Chameera looks to defend but is squared up by the late movement. An outside edge is induced but this time the ball does not carry to gully. Good diving stop too.
Dushmantha Chameera is in at no. 10.
Mitchell Starc to Dilruwan Perera. OUT! Dilruwan Perera departs as well! Sri Lanka are folding up now. Starc has his tail up and is wrapping the Lankan one now. Wonderful delivery. On a fuller length outside off, Perera looks to drive but there is some late outswing. Hence, he gets a thick outside edge towards third slip where Marnus Labuschagne takes another one. His third.

Suranga Lakmal is forced to come in now, replacing Perera.
This is not good news. DILRUWAN IS WALKING OFF, RETIRED HURT. The way he was feeling while holding his bat, didn't seem like he would wish to bat. Sri Lanka would be more worried with his bowling prospects. He is a key bowler for them.
Pat Cummins to Dilruwan Perera. OUCH! Right on the thumb! Oh dear... Dilruwan is in too much pain. His bat has been thrown on the ground and he himself now is on his haunches. What a nasty blow from Cummins. He bowls a quick delivery, short in length, right on middle and leg. Perera looks to defend but the ball kicks off the surface and hits him hard on the thumb due to the pace of the delivery. It was bowled at 140.9 kph. It is also his bowling arm. The ball lobs off the glove and Marcus Harris at short leg tries to go for the catch but cannot get there.
Dilruwan is by no means comfortable. It is his thumb. That too, on his bowling hand - the right one. Oh dear, it is not the greatest of welcomes to the 'Gabba by Patrick. This is fast, fiery bowling. Dilruwan is getting his first two fingers taped on his right hand. He is trying to grip his bat and play but he is not ready yet. There is a long discussion going on.

Starc has got the odd ball to talk but not consistent enough while Lyon is getting good purchase already. At 58/3, Australia know they have the upper hand and will not want to let this slip. A fighting session for both sides. Sri Lanka were patient at the start and did play well but couldn't resist their shots after a period of time. The two openers did struggle against the new ball but made sure they didn't throw their wickets away in that duration. The Gabba is all set to host its second day-night Test as Australia welcome Sri Lanka for a 2-match Test series. Hello and welcome to our coverage of this edition of the Australian summer. Sri Lanka fly down under and look to win their first Test series here. Australia on the other hand, will look to keep that record intact and show the critics what they are capable off. They didn't have the best of starts to their summer after India got the better of them. The Kangaroos have handed Jhye Richardson and Kurtis Patterson their caps and it will be interesting to see how they fare. A couple of other faces come in from their last Test series. Sri Lanka will be without Angelo Mathews and they will look to do better than what they did against the Kiwis. Stay with us for the toss.
Lakmal bowled his heart out, taking a 5-fer but it was Lahiru Kumara who bowled with fire. The rest were not all that impressive. 6 overs left in the day. Can Sri Lanka see them off without damage? Here come the openers...
A decent batting display by the Australians. Harris played a dodged knock, seeing off the difficult period last evening and then knocks by Head, Labuschagne and Patterson. The latter two impressed the most, playing 'correct' cricket with the right technique and having loads of patience. Head, meanwhile, was flirting with his luck.
Harsh to say so. The pitch is not all that difficult to bat but it is the ball - if it moves, then Starc will talk. And if the latest member of the 200-club starts to talk, well, Sri Lanka will not be left with much to talk.
Sri Lanka made 144. Australia lead by 179. Does that mean an innings defeat is on the cards?

What is disappointing for Sri Lanka is the way they played in this session. They nearly struck in the first over after Tea but Dickwella could not get that chance. Post that, it has been a series of poor deliveries and poor fielding efforts. The bowling looks ragged as well.

DRINKS BREAK! It has been a good passage of play for Australia. They have not lost a wicket and have looked calm and composed with their batting. Sri Lanka on the other hand, have not picked up a wicket but there have been some close calls. Travis Head got a life in the first over after Tea but Dickwella spilled the chance. It was crucial at that time for the visitors to put pressure again on the Aussie batsmen. Will they be forced to pay the price for it? Dhananjaya de Silva to bowl now.

Perera appeals but the umpire shakes his head. Sri Lanka don't go for the review. Over to the Hawk Eye for our benefit. It shows that the impact was outside off and it would have been umpire's call in terms of hitting the stumps. Interesting observation from Michael Hussey on air though. He reckons that even though the impact is shown to be outside off, Travis had his bat behind the line - which means, impact does not matter. So... could have been given out.

Good length delivery outside off, Head looks to defend but gets an outside edge due to the away movement. It goes towards first slip but Dickwella dived and had gone with one hand to take the catch but spills it. It was a tough catch. First slip would have taken it easily to his right. The best time to bat in a Day-Night Test. Australia will hope to score runs and up that run rate. Wickets can probably put a question mark on that thought. Suranga Lakmal to set the question paper first up, to Marnus Labuschagne.
... DAY 2, SESSION 2 ...
Hard to fault the Sri Lankan bowlers for picking up just 2 wickets. But such is the state of the game. They need to keep on trying. Kumara was the pick of the lot with his pace while Lakmal was accurate. Can that pressure be created again? The Lankans will be looking to break this partnership and try and finish the innings off before Dinner. Probably try and limit the lead under 100. Australia, on the other hand, would be hoping that at least one of Head or Labuschagne is there at the crease when the pink ball is bowled under lights. Stay tuned...
So Labuschagne bid his time, soaked in the pressure and then slowly but surely, started to score. He was on 10 from 46 balls at one stage. Now he is on 36 from 80. That turn in momentum was brought about by him and the hosts are feeling confident because of his sponge-like ability to soak all the pressure. Oz are lucky that they did not lose more than 2 wickets in this session. Head was playing with his body on the frying pan and on fire, with too many loose shots. Got a few edges but all fell safe. Crucially for the home side, he looks set now.
If I would have been playing on my gaming console, Australia would have been all out by now. But as they say in cricket, one needs to understand the situation. Respect when the going is tough and then capitalize when it gets a bit easier. Marnus Labuschagne has been that bright student in the class who comes first and answers all his teacher's questions. Good boy.
What is Test cricket? A test of one's character. Be it a batsman or a bowler. Marcus Harris scored a boundary off the fifth ball of the afternoon. The next 10 overs yielded just 23 with 2 wickets. That has how it has been. Tough. Competitive. Sri Lanka gave it their all, keeping Australia busy. The tight lines and lengths did not waiver much and the hosts were in a pool of trouble. But then, eventually, the pressure started to ease off.
26 overs, 87 runs, 2 wickets. If you are switching on just now, you will have a look at the scorecard and say, ahh... normal scenario. Australia will score 400 and win this by an innings. Bad bowling from Sri Lanka. Well, actually, that has not been the case.

The ball comes back in a long way and hits him on the pads. Chameera appeals for LBW but is turned down as the impact looked to be outside off. Meanwhile, there is some more drama. The ball deflects towards the slip cordon where an alert Kusal Mendis charges in from second slip and has a shy at the striker's end, hoping to catch Labuschagne off guard, who is still working on his huge stride. Unfortunately for Kusal, he misses. The back foot had just made it in the crease. But then, more misfortune arrived. Normally, in Tests, you do not have a mid on. There was none here either. Because the throw missed the stumps, it went through mid on which was vacant. By the time short mid-wicket could track it down, three runs are taken. The deficit is now 49.

Lahiru Kumara to Marnus Labuschagne. Another huge LBW shout. But not out. Kumara is agitated but Chandimal calms him down. No need to waste the second review. The impact looked outside off and Hawk Eye confirms. Good technique shown by Labuschagne. Gets a good stride in, meets the ball on the pitch but misses it, due to the inward movement. Is hit on the pads but his long stride and slight shuffle across save him. Another lovely over. No runs off the bat since ball number 5 of the 27th over. The Sri Lankans are loving the 'Gabba...
Lahiru Kumara to Marnus Labuschagne. The batsman has played that off the front foot and into the ground.
Lahiru Kumara to Marnus Labuschagne. Landed outside off, this one comes back in as well, but ML knows where his off stump is. Shoulders arms.

Travis Head walks in at number 6, replacing Lyon. Two new batsmen in the middle.
Suranga Lakmal to Nathan Lyon. OUT! The ball has carried and Lyon has to go! Second wicket in the space of 17 balls this morning. Australia have lost 3/10 in the span of 40 deliveries, if you add Khawaja's dismissal last night. Lovely delivery, full and around off, Nathan looked to defend. However, the away movement consumed him. A thick outside edge was induced which went towards second slip. It was dipping and Kusal Mendis had to dive forward. But he took it cleanly or rather, let us put it this way - he was confident that he had taken it. Lyon was going nowhere though. He wanted it to be checked and the umpires obliged. Not quite sure what the soft signal was but does not matter. One look in the replays was enough to take the right decision. O. U. T. Australia still trail by 62. Can Sri Lanka start thinking about the lead now?
Is that out? Has that carried? Things happening at the 'Gabba. Lyon has edged one but he doesn't think it has carried to second slip. Third umpire intervention time...

Lahiru Kumara to Marnus Labuschagne. Outside off, left alone watchfully.
Lahiru Kumara to Nathan Lyon. NOT OUT. Impact itself is outside leg. That is a really bad review. One cannot blame Dickwella as he would have been blinded by Lyon. But what about Kumara? It was a full toss which was missed, yes. But still, the ball had some distance to travel. Agreed that the batsman was shuffling across. But that came after playing the shot. Anyways, in the heat of the moment and all the excitement, Kumara probably thought he had Lyon LBW when he missed the flick. But not Hawk Eye.
Huge LBW shout! Not out, says the umpire. Kumara reckons that he has Lyon here. Chandimal takes the review. Looks to be missing leg to the naked eye...
Lahiru Kumara to Nathan Lyon. Nearly through him! On a length outside off, Nathan looks to defend but the ball sneaks back in off the pitch, takes the inside edge and almost goes back onto the stumps! The pads come in the way...

Lahiru Kumara to Marcus Harris. OUT! Caught next ball! Oh wow. This is so, so lucky for Sri Lanka. Bad ball, but a wicket! Short and outside off, Harris latches on to the cut shot and hits it well too. But finds Lahiru Thirimanne at point to perfection! All that watchfulness last evening has come to naught. Harris started on 40 this morning. This is a nice lesson for him to understand that every day, every session, every mini-session and every time you start after a break, you start on 0. Australia trail by 68, Sri Lanka hunting for 7 more wickets.
Lahiru Kumara to Marcus Harris. FOUR! MAGNIFICENT! The most confident shot played by Harris all through his innings. Full and outside off, Marcus leans into the shot, reaches out to meet the ball and strokes it through the covers.

The visitors may be a long way behind as of now but they need not be disheartened. Given the way Australia's batting has performed in the last few months, there are big chances of them not getting too much of a lead. A one-inning shootout is what they should aim for.
A rare good day it was for the Aussies as they took the game by the scruff of the neck with the pink ball. The match has begun at a fast pace with 12 wickets on Day 1. In a day-night Test, certainly more scalps can be expected on days to follow. Does that mean we could see Sri Lanka batting before the lights take effect? Or will Australia take the match out of Sri Lanka's reach? Hello and a warm welcome to the second day of the opening Test between Australia and Sri Lanka at the 'Gabba.
... DAY 2, AFTERNOON SESSION ...
Is the game over for Sri Lanka? Well, no. Certainly not, we hope! But it might well be, if Australia manage to bat out the whole day of Friday. The fact that they have struggled to play out a whole day consistently in recent times will give the Lankans hope. Can they come out firing on Day 2 and restrict the Aussies under 200? Then, we can really have a contest. Join us for all the action at 1 pm local (0300 GMT). ADIOS! TAKE CARE!
Earlier in the day, a fearsome quick bowling display was there for all to see as Oz nipped the Sri Lankan innings for just 144. Cummins and debutant Jhye were the pick of the bowlers, with 7 scalps between them. The Lankans will be rueing that effort - or lack of it - winning the toss, electing to bat but not even lasting a day.
It was a difficult session for the Aussies under lights, with the pink ball moving around. Marcus Harris never looked settled but ironically, he has batted through the session, on a patient 40. Burns and Khawaja made two trips to the middle and back but neither looked too confident either. Both the stands got a start, but could not be converted.
That last wicket might just spur the Lankans on but it has been Australia's session and Australia's day. After losing the toss, if you can bowl out the opposition in just over 2 sessions and then reduce the deficit by half, you have had a jolly good day.

Brisbane done, off to Canberra next but Sri Lanka have a baggage of an injury as well along with the defeat to be carried forward. Lahiru Kumara is ruled out of the series. Lots of headaches for the visitors and one can only think that the only way for them to come back will be to start afresh and treat the next one as a completely new game, trying to forget this loss as soon as possible. That Test will begin on 1st Feb, Friday. That will be a Day game and will begin at 1030 Local (2330 GMT, Jan 31 night). Join us for that! Till then, take care and cheers. For live cricketing action now though, you can switch tabs to follow the game between India and New Zealand where the hosts are chasing a mountain of runs at Mount Maunganui.
PAT CUMMINS IS ADJUDGED AS THE MAN OF THE MATCH FOR HIS INCREDIBLE MATCH FIGURES OF 10/62.
Earlier in the game, Australia bundled out the visitors for a paltry 144 after the latter had won the toss and decided to bat first. Cummins was the wrecker-in-chief in that innings as well picking up four whereas the debutant Jhye picked up three. In their turn to bat, Australia were at a precarious position at one stage at 82/4 but then a 166-run stand for the fifth wicket between Marnus Labuschagne and Travis Head meant they comfortably went past the Sri Lankan total. They ended up with a lead of 179 which in the end proved to be more than enough for the hapless Asian team.
Sri Lanka have received a real pasting here. Outplayed in all departments in this Daynight Test here at Brisbane. The second innings went spiralling down and the lack of resistance would be what hurts the visitors the most. Pat Cummins destroyed the batting order picking up 6 wickets and was given good support by Jhye Richardson who picked up two of his own. Nathan Lyon had a lone wicket whereas the last batsman, Lahiru Kumara was absent hurt. There was not much to talk about the batting, only Lahiru Thirimanne provided some resistance but was running out of partners all through the innings.
Jhye Richardson in an interview says that he was nervous the first day. Adds that he is happy to have contributed to the team victory. Applauds his teammates for a stellar performance and singles out Cummins for special praise. Talking about the post-match huddle, he says that the skipper was telling them that it was a pep talk and motivation for them to continue these kind of performances. Signs off by saying it was an amazing catch from Patterson and really loves the fielding effort of everyone.
Nathan Lyon to Suranga Lakmal. OUT! It is all over here at the 'Gabba. Lahiru Kumara is not going to come out to bat and hence, that is the end of the Test match. AUSTRALIA HAVE WON BY AN INNINGS AND 40 RUNS, LEAD 1-0 IN THE TWO-MATCH SERIES. Coming to the last wicket, it was a flighted ball on middle and turning in, Lakmal could not resist and comes down the ground looking to smash it into oblivion but misses the ball and Paine completes an easy stumping. A fitting way for the inspirational skipper of Australia to end the game. He took over in tough times and this victory would mean a lot after the series loss to India. Pulls up all the teammates in a huddle and gives a pep talk before they walk off the field all smiles.

Pat Cummins to Lahiru Thirimanne. OUT! Bizarre! The third umpire asks the umpire to stay with the original decision. What has happened here? The Snicko has shown a turbulence but in a frame that is after the ball passes the bat. It is the fifth wicket for Cummins, the fourth time in Tests. A length ball outside off and shapes away slightly, Thirimanne was ahead to defend but the ball straightens and there is a noise as the ball passes the bat and goes to Tim Paine. An immediate celebration from the fielders and the bowlers and the umpire agrees too. Lahiru was surprised and immediately goes upstairs. The replays roll in, there is nothing on Hotspot and we go to the Snickometer. The line remains straight as the ball passes the outside edge but there is a slight turbulence once it is past the willow. The third umpire feels that the frame was a little behind and suggests it is a faint edge. Asks the on-field umpire to remain with his original decision. Thirimanne cannot believe it but he has to go. His dogged resistance comes to an end. The Lankans are still 100 runs behind with only 4 wickets left.

Welcome back after Tea. The players and umpires are out in the middle. Lahiru Thirimanne and Niroshan Dickwella are out as well. Mitchell Starc will bowl the first over of this session and Thirimanne will face.
... Day 3, Session 2 ...
Now, Niroshan Dickwella has joined forces with the opening batsman. They played out one remaining over of the session but whether they will continue and help Sri Lanka out of this mess and keep them alive in the game is to be seen. Doesn't look like they will to me though, considering how Cummins and Richardson are bowling. The former has got enough rest after his initial burst in the first session and should be back on anytime now after the break. Good luck to the Sri Lankan batsmen, would be lovely for Test cricket if they stand up and post a challenge though. Join us in a bit for the second session of the day as the visitors try to wipe off the deficit that is still 105 runs.
What a session for the Aussies but one would have definitely hoped for a bit more of a fight from the Lankans. 26 overs, 57 runs and 4 wickets. No boundary off the bat. Guess who has been the star? Yes, it is that man again. Pat Cummins. Started off from where he left off last night and picked up three more wickets this morning. Lahiru Thirimanne has been adamant not to give his wicket away and even though DRS came to his rescue once, other times he has looked completely solid. No one partnered him though and just when it looked like Dhananjaya would stay he was castled off a brilliant yorker length ball by Jhye Richardson.

The players are out in the middle. Dinesh Chandimal has come out to join Lahiru Thirimanne. The Aussies are in a huddle. A bit of a tradition is being followed, with a particular celebration for Australia Day. All set to resume play now as the players spread out. 162 behind are the Lankans. Jhye Richardson it will be, to start off proceedings for the day. to Thirimanne. Here we go then... Let's play!
What can the Lankans do from here on? Take inspiration from Windies and England and fight. Battle hard. There is plenty of time left in this Test and the pitch is not a minefield. Application will be the key. To give context in the Windies-England Test, 8 wickets fell on Day 1, 18 on Day 2, but - NONE ON DAY 3. If Sri Lanka manage to do what Jason Holder and Shane Dowrich did yesterday or what VVS Laxman and Rahul Dravid did way back in 2001 at Eden Gardens, boy - we could have a game on our hands. Hello and a warm welcome to the third day's play of the first Test between Australia and Sri Lanka at the 'Gabba.
A look at the scorecard and one would say, it has been Australia's Test so far. They dismantled the Lankans quickly on Thursday and have finished Friday with a lead of 179 and nipped out Karunaratne. But what the scorecard does not show is - opportunities missed by the Lankans. They bowled out of their skins yesterday afternoon, reducing the Aussies to 82/4 as early as the first hour but then lost patience as the heat took toll. Eventually, the Labuschagne-Head stand took the game away from them. That partnership was worth 166, 22 more than what Sri Lanka themselves got.
Now, a warm thanks to all those who have come over to follow this game, considering that an interesting New-Zealand India contest is enveloping at the Bay Oval. This is the third day of this Test and often, Day 3 is considered to be a moving day of cricket. 12 wickets fell on Day 1, 9 on Day 2. Will another 9 fall today and end this game?
'No matter where our personal stories began. Reflect on being Australian, celebrate contemporary Australia and recognize our history.' This is the importance of today. January 26. AUSTRALIA DAY. The date of January 26, 1788 marked the proclamation of British sovereignty over the eastern seaboard of Australia, although the country got its name in 1808. On New Year's Day 1901, the British colonies of Australia formed a federation, marking the birth of modern Australia. It was not until 1935 that all Australian states and territories adopted use of the term 'Australia Day' to mark the date, and not until 1994 that the date was consistently marked by a public holiday on that day by all states and territories. So to all those reading, WISH YOU A VERY HAPPY AUSTRALIA DAY.
... DAY 3, AFTERNOON SESSION ...
Tough couple of days for Sri Lanka. Bowled out under 60 overs in the first innings, conceded more than 250 on Day 2 and have their backs to the wall at the moment. They still trail by 162 runs with 9 wickets in hand. The middle order needs to step up. Join us at 1 pm local (0300 GMT) on Saturday which is a special day for the Aussies. It is AUSTRALIA DAY and might well be the final day of this Test. ADIOS! TAKE CARE!

What is happening? The umpires are having a chat with Tim Paine and Travis Head. The former is smiling but the latter seems very serious. Was there something said to someone? Any sledging? We don't know. Might come in the papers tomorrow. For now, it is Australia's wonderful finish to the day.
Pat Cummins to Dimuth Karunaratne. OUT! Caught behind! A wicket does fall in the small passage of play! Guess who gets it. Guess who gets it? Not Starc. But that warhorse Pat Cummins. What a beautiful set up in this over. Mixing his lengths, then the lines. Got the ball to come back in and then move away. The last one came back in, this one moved away. Karunaratne was not sure whether to play at that or not and had a push. Got the nick. End of story as Tim Paine did the rest. STUMPS ON DAY 2, SRI LANKA TRAIL BY 162!
