Sri Lanka vs South Africa Highlights And Cricket Score 4th Match - ODI Commentary

End of Over : 39.0 SL: 306/7

Big task ahead for the Proteas. A revised target of 308 isn't an easy one in normal situations as it is, gunning it down in 39 overs is a bigger challenge. The task might get more difficult if the rain intervenes again, so the Saffas will want a brisk start without losing much wickets. The chase is set up to be an exciting one. Don't go anywhere, it'll begin shortly...

South Africa were put under the pump today and they couldn't rise up to the occasion. Certain new players were brought in and everyone, including the regulars, were taken to the cleaners. Wickets were shared all around, though they didn't come at vital times and the runs couldn't be contained. Both Thisara and Shanaka blasted their respective fifties in the death overs, which should say a lot in itself.

Sri Lanka have done in 39 overs what they were struggling to do in 50 overs - get to the 300-mark. After a rather stop-start beginning to the game, whereby the overs were reduced to 39 eventually, Dickwella and Tharanga powered the Lankans off to a fast start. It laid the platform for the rest to capitalize on. The wickets might have kept falling, but the partnerships made were fast ones. 31 between Tharanga and Mendis, then 59 between Mathews and Kusal Perera. The big one though came late between Thisara and Shanaka, wherein they blasted 109 in 70 balls to power Sri Lanka past 300.

Length ball outside off, Akila moves across to scoop it over the keeper's head but can't connect due to the lack of pace on it. We are ready to begin. South Africa are in a team huddle with their stand-in skipper Quinton de Kock giving them one last pep talk. They spread out on the field as Niroshan Dickwella and Upul Tharanga stride out to the middle. Lungi Ngidi to take the new ball first up. It's got quite dark out there again, could rain once more. Two slips in place. Let's roll...

Angelo Mathews says they would have bowled first too. Feels the wicket looks dry but it settles down later. Mentions there's one change as Prabath Jayasuriya goes out for Dasun Shanaka. Ends by saying he wants his team to do better in all three aspects.

Quinton de Kock says they will have a bowl first. Mentions the wicket does get better under lights, hence the decision to bowl first. Informs there are three changes as Junior Dala comes in for Kagiso Rabada, Heinrich Klaasen for Faf du Plessis and Keshav Maharaj replaces Tabraiz Shamsi. States he wants to test the bench strength and hopes it's a good day for him as captain.

TOSS - South Africa win the toss and opt to field first!

Pitch Report - Kepler Wessels out in the middle says it's a great wicket. Adds that he thought due to the rain, there would be more moisture in it but that's not the case. Continues to say it's very level, very even and it's nice and hard. Reckons the surface looks excellent surface to bat on and the team winning the toss will look to have a go with the bat first. Feels there won't be much swing available, so change of pace will be key.

Hello and welcome to the coverage of the 4th game between Sri Lanka and South Africa. A dead rubber as the series is already decided but there is still a lot at stake. For Sri Lanka, they would want to win it, avoid a whitewash. For South Africa, they will want to keep the hopes of a whitewash alive. Also their new captain Quinton de Kock will be eager to win his first game. What will be the outcome? We will have to wait and find out. Stay tuned for the toss and teams.

End of Over : 21.0 SA: 187/9

So that is it! Sri Lanka finally get a win in the ODI series which also means they avoid the whitewash. South Africa on the other hand, will be disappointed that they could not come out on the winning side. The cricketing action between the two sides does not end as there is one more ODI to go which will be played on the 12th of August at 0230 PM local (0900 AM GMT). Till then, take care and goodbye.

Sri Lankan captain, Angelo Mathews, says it was a very important victory and he is proud of the way his team performed. Mentions the two all rounders played really well. Further adds it was a fantastic effort by the bowlers especially after the DLS method played into the hands of South Africa. Reckons there is Improvement in the batting department and also credits the groundstaff for their effort and handwork.

Man of the Match, Dasun Shanaka, says there was no place for him before this game in the squad but he has grabbed his opportunity. Admits he was not nervous and he enjoyed his batting out in the middle. Ends by saying he is really happy with how the team performed.

South African captain, Quinton de Kock, says it is always difficult losing a game like this one. He adds it was a good game in the end though. Credits the character Sri Lanka showed. Admits they were still backing themselves when David Miller was out there. Ends by saying he enjoyed the responsibility as captain but is sad they could not finish on the winning side.

Akila Dananjaya then got rid off Amla and then in de Silva's one over, Klaasen and the well-set Duminy courtesy a run out took the long walk back. All of a sudden after that, run scoring got difficult. However, the visitors should have still chased this down especially after a handy cameo from Maharaj who fell on the last ball of the penultimate over, leaving the Proteas needing 8 in the last over with Miller on strike. But Miller's wicket on the second ball and Lakmal's excellent line and length in the last over gave Sri Lanka their narrowest win over the Proteas.

Hashim Amla and Quinton de Kock got them off to a flier before the left-hander perished. Then Reeza Hendricks walked out at no. 3 but did not stay out for long. Duminy though along with Amla, milked runs at ease and in no time the two added a 57-run stand. At that time, one would have felt, South Africa would chase this down in a canter but it wasn't to be.

Now where did it all change for the South Africans? The Duminy run out? Maybe. They were cruising before that. After the thumping their bowlers received at the hands of the Sri Lankan batsmen, their openers came out all guns blazing. Rain then intervened yet again, setting South Africa a revised target of 191 in 21 overs. Which was comparatively easier than the one they had to chase before (308).

Talk about snatching a defeat from the jaws of victory. Sri Lanka have done exactly that. What a nerve-wrecker. UFF! Credit to Suranga Lakmal, he kept his nerve, stayed as cool as possible and defended just 7 in the last over, also taking the wicket of David Miller. Outstanding!

20.6 1

Suranga Lakmal to Junior Dala. Just the one and SRI LANKA WIN BY 3 RUNS! Excellent, excellent last over by Lakmal. Take a bow. He bowls it on a back of a length around middle, Dala mistimes it towards covers and gets to the other end. Smiles all around the Sri Lanka dressing room as they have finally beaten South Africa after 11 straight losses. Also, the last win over them came at this same venue in 2014.

20.5 2

Suranga Lakmal to Junior Dala. A brace! Now 5 off the last ball! Short of a length on middle, Dala swings, he gets it off the inner half through square leg and the batsmen run two.

The umpire then signals for the third umpire and replays confirm Keshav is in.

Another direct hit at the bowler's end! Maharaj seems to be well in but just to be sure.

Suranga Lakmal to Keshav Maharaj. A single! Again Sri Lanka have Maharaj on strike. He taps this towards point and gets to the other end. How useful would it have been, had he done this on the ball before?

18.5 0

Suranga Lakmal to Keshav Maharaj. And again! This was even uglier than the last one. Outside off and it was the slower one. Maharaj was a week early into his shot and he misses it by a month. 2 dots in a row,

18.4 0

Lakmal bowls a shorter delivery on middle, Mulder picks the length early and goes for the pull through mid-wicket. He though does not keep it down and Dhananjaya there dives full stretch to his left and takes it. Take a bow. In the first innings, de Kock did something similar to get rid of Mathews.

15.3 4

Thisara Perera to Willem Mulder. FOUR! What a shot to get off the mark. One would wonder after looking at that shot, why was he sent after Andile? Slightly short outside off, he guides it through backward point and the ball races to the fence. That should release the pressure which was building.

Willem Mulder strides out to the middle.

15.2 W

Another brace.

Akila Dananjaya to Hashim Amla. OUT! Taken! Sri Lanka manage to get the breakthrough. Full and wide outside off, Amla looks to go hard at that, over the off side, but ends up slicing it. The result is a thick outside edge, not going where he intended to, but towards backward point instead where Lahiru Kumara does not drop it.Hashim falls 10 short of a half century but just get the feeling that this 57-run stand might have sealed the deal for the tourists.

6.4 4

Dasun Shanaka to JP Duminy. FOUR! Wow. Has JP Duminy struck any ball better than in this innings? Pommie Mbangwa is testing all our cricket fans' memory by asking this question on air. I certainly don't remember. Tonight, he is playing with that air of 'I-am-invincible' confidence. Jumps down the track, converts the length ball into a half volley and boom. The stand is already worth 23 from 8 balls.

5.5 2

Lahiru Kumara to JP Duminy. A short ball outside leg, JP has no idea about that one, looks to fend it off as the ball kicks through the surface. He is not even watching the ball as it goes off the bat handle through square leg. The running is excellent as the batsmen return for the second.

5.4 6

Lahiru Kumara to JP Duminy. SIX! TAKE THAT! Did we say everyone seems to be in a hurry? You bet, they are! 4.5 1

Dasun Shanaka to JP Duminy. A short ball, around middle, helped wide of mid-wicket for a single to get off the mark.

JP Duminy walks in at number 4, replacing Hendricks.

4.4 W

Dasun Shanaka to Reeza Hendricks. OUT, DROPPED, CAUGHT! Taken on the rebound and the centurion in the last game departs cheaply in this one. Not the best of wicket-taking deliveries but Shanaka will not complain. A half volley outside off, Hendricks looks to drive this uppishly, over cover. However, he is unable to clear Dhananjaya de Silva at short extra cover who first stops the flow of the ball with his hand, then luckily for himself, sees the ball go up off his palms. Calmly takes it in the second attempt. Sri Lanka are jubilant. They need to keep picking up wickets. As far as Hendricks is concerned, well, that proverb goes for him - 'Everyday is not Sunday'... ahem...

3.5 4

Thisara Perera to Hashim Amla. FOUR! Excellent batting! Amla seems to be continuing from where he left off on Sunday. A length ball outside off again, this time Amla does not shuffle across. Albeit, he just whips it wide of mid on, in the air, towards long on for a boundary!

3.4 4

Thisara Perera to Hashim Amla. FOUR! Superb shot. Excellent wristwork. Not a bad ball at all. Thisara bowls it on a length close to the off stump and what does Amla do? Gets across and whips it efficiently past short fine leg for a boundary. 148 more needed from 104 balls.

2.6 W

Suranga Lakmal to Quinton de Kock. OUT! BOWLED 'EM! Lakmal has the last laugh. He gets a wicket on a full toss. He dishes out a high one. De Kock clears his front leg and tries to hit it through the off side but misses it completely and the ball hits the off pole. De Kock stands there in disbelief and then has a look at the umpire as he feels it is a no ball but the umpire has his hands down and de Kock has to walk back cheaply in his first outing as captain. A much-needed wicket for Sri Lanka. Can they now build on this?

2.5 1

Suranga Lakmal to Hashim Amla. Excellent batting this! Put away the good balls and respect the bad ones. That is exactly what the two batsmen are doing. On a length and around off, Amla taps it towards point and gets to the other end.

2.4 1

Suranga Lakmal to Quinton de Kock. Clips it with the angle through the leg side and gets to the other end.

2.3 6

Suranga Lakmal to Quinton de Kock. SIX! WOW! What a hit! Probably the shot of the game. De Kock makes room and Lakmal follows him but bowls it a touch too full. QDK shows the full face of the bat and lofts it over the bowler's head. The timing is such that it has carried all the way.

2.2 1

Suranga Lakmal to Hashim Amla. Once again the leg stump line, Amla this time works it through square leg and gets to the other end.

2.1 4

Suranga Lakmal to Hashim Amla. FOUR! Poor line to start with straightaway. Down the leg side and Amla is too good a batsman to miss out. He works it fine down the leg side and a boundary results.

Finally, we are now getting underway! Out come the umpires along with the Sri Lankan players. They are followed by the openers, Hashim Amla and Quinton de Kock. Suranga Lakmal will continue his spell. Here we go...

2155 local update - Hurrah! We are going to have a game after all! 21 overs allotted after all the reductions - target being 191. Who will be the happier side? Of course, if it does not rain... will we get a completed match?

2140 local update - Hmmm... well, good news... hopefully. The rain has stopped and the umpires are going to have an inspection in 15 minutes. But the catch is - play must start around 10 pm local. Just imagine... all the hard work down the drain for Sri Lanka if this is washed out. Fingers crossed...

2115 local - Good news! The rain has now stopped and the covers have been peeled off. Let us hope we have a resumption soon.

2045 local - Uh oh! Another break. It is more of a precautionary one as the umpires have looked at the ground staff who seem to be ready to take the covers on. Ohhh... as I type that, it is coming down heavily. And now as I typed that, it is almost gone! Hopefully, we should not have a big delay.

End of Over : 2 9 Runs SA: 21/0

Akila Dananjaya to Quinton de Kock. Full and outside off, driven straight to cover.

1.2 1

Akila Dananjaya to Hashim Amla. In the air... safe! Hashim gets lucky now after de Kock in the previous over. He attempts anoter sweep but this time gets a top edge. Luckily for him, Suranga Lakmal, who was moved finer after the boundary, cannot get there. Had he been in the position as on the previous ball, he would have taken the catch with the ball landing around backward square leg. A single taken.

1.1 4

Akila Dananjaya to Hashim Amla. FOUR! Bad start. Full and outside leg, Amla gets down and paddles it past the man at short fine leg. 4000 ODI runs as a pair for Amla and de Kock - the first South African pair to do so and 11th overall.

0.4 0

Suranga Lakmal to Quinton de Kock. Full and straight, driven back to the bowler.

0.3 4

Suranga Lakmal to Quinton de Kock. FOUR! Streaky! Lucky boundary for the skipper. On a length outside off, Quinton looks to punch it through the off side but is too far from the ball. Gets a thick inside edge which flies past the off stump. The Lankan keeper is moving to his left and hence is wrong-footed. The ball goes to his right and races to the fine leg fence. 4000 ODI runs for Quinton de Kock - the 12th Protea to achieve this feat and 6th fastest overall.
