South Africa vs Sri Lanka Highlights And Cricket Score 3rd Match - ODI Commentary
A massive target to chase. Stating the obvious, a fast start will be essential. The Lankans won't find it easy though. There has been movement for the pacers as shown in the first innings and you can be sure Rabada and Ngidi will come out firing. A stern challenge awaits the home side. Join us in a short while for all the action.
This is a high-scoring surface, no doubt, but even this might be out of Sri Lanka's reach. The last 5 overs cost them 71 runs. That says a lot in itself. Everyone went for runs. Well, almost everyone, including their best bowler Thisara Perera. He picked up 4 wickets but went for a lot in the death overs. Lahiru Kumara was quite good, picking up 2 for himself conceding just 67, which isn't bad at all, all things considered. Cannot say much else for the rest.
The Proteas will feel they have enough on the board. Surely. This is their highest score in Sri Lanka and third highest in Asia. And that's happened because of a collective batting performance. Hashim Amla's fifty at the beginning, Reeza Hendricks' stunning ton on debut, which was followed up by two blazing knocks from JP Duminy (who missed his century by just 8 runs) and David Miller (who made a responsible fifty), with the finishing touches being added by Andile Phehlukwayo. Everyone came to the fore, leaving no stone unturned in powering the touring side past 360.
Akila Dananjaya to Willem Mulder. OUT! Akila strikes on the final ball of the innings. Somewhat fortunate for him. Bowls it full on leg, a leg spinner, Mulder clears his front leg to go big on the leg side. Gets an inside edge onto his left boot and the ball gently rolls behind to knock the bails over. SOUTH AFRICA FINISH ON 363/7!
Akila Dananjaya to Willem Mulder. Wide! Another one. As if South Africa already didn't have enough on the board. Too far outside off this time, across the tramline and it's another wide.
Akila Dananjaya to Andile Phehlukwayo. Two wides! Darted too far outside off, Andile lets it be. Dickwella can't collect and the batsmen take a run. Wide signalled too.
Akila Dananjaya to Willem Mulder. Mulder gives it the full swing of the bat and gets it through to deep mid-wicket. Gets to the other end comfortably.
Akila Dananjaya to Andile Phehlukwayo. Cannot connect cleanly this time. Steps out and hits it through covers. One run taken.
Akila Dananjaya to Andile Phehlukwayo. Wide! Fired down the leg side on a full length, left alone.
Akila Dananjaya to Andile Phehlukwayo. SIX! Maximum! Terrific start to the over from Phehlukwayo. Sees the flight on the ball, gives the charge and lifts it nicely over the long on boundary.
Akila Dananjaya to Andile Phehlukwayo. FOUR! Full toss and Phehlukwayo has dispatched it from his sight. Loopy full toss on the stumps, the southpaw gets into position to play the reverse sweep and clears point. Nobody out there square in the deep, another boundary.
Akila Dananjaya to Willem Mulder. Flat, short and keeps low outside off, Mulder cuts it into the off side and brings Andile on strike.
Thisara Perera to Andile Phehlukwayo. The batsman has punched that ball through the off side. Two runs added to the total. A mixed day for Thisara. He had a superb opening spell where he had returns of 6-0-26-2, but finishes with figures of 4/75 in 10.
Thisara Perera to Andile Phehlukwayo. FOUR! Serves a low full toss well outside off, Andile throws his bat at it and carves it through backward point. Into the gap and that's a boundary.
Willem Mulder walks out next to bat.
Thisara Perera to David Miller. OUT! Miller scores a fifty and then departs! A low full toss, Miller tries to get underneath it again and clear mid-wicket. Can't do it cleanly enough and he hands over a catch to de Silva out in the deep. He's set South Africa up perfectly towards the end, as is expected from him.
Thisara Perera to David Miller. SIX! 11th ODI fifty for David Miller! Gets to the milestone in style. Slower one from Thisara again and Miller picks it up once more. Gets under it and sends it sailing deep into the mid-wicket stands for half a dozen.

Andile Phehlukwayo is next in. Surprisingly, no Mulder.
Thisara Perera to JP Duminy. OUT! Duminy holes out! Oh, how unfortunate for him. He's just missed out on his century. Could have had his first one since 2015. Full on middle and off, JP moves across and looks to hammer this over the mid-wicket boundary. Doesn't exactly get underneath it and he sends it straight down the throat of Dhananjaya de Silva who makes no mistake in taking it. JP's gone, but he's done more than his share.

The fielder out there covers good ground to his right and makes a tumbling stop. Two taken. 23 off the over. Massive one for the Proteas.
Suranga Lakmal to JP Duminy. SIX! 4, 4, 6, 6 so far. Duminy doesn't look like he plans on stopping any time soon either. Length ball on the stumps, it's smoked over mid-wicket. Clears the fence with ease as the fielder out there can only watch.
Suranga Lakmal to JP Duminy. SIX! Oh, you beauty! A century on the cards for Duminy? Sure looks like it. Lakmal dishes out a full toss from around the wicket, it's angling in and Duminy just murders this over deep backward square leg for a flat biggie.
Suranga Lakmal to JP Duminy. FOUR! Another one. Fuller around off, Duminy picks up the slower one and jumps out of the crease. Lofts it over a leaping Mendis at extra cover and finds the fence. The 300 is up with this. South Africa might just get to 350 like this. Maybe more.

Akila Dananjaya to David Miller. Flatter and shorter on the stumps, pulled down towards long on for a single.
Akila Dananjaya to David Miller. Not out! The review is lost. Not their fault though, difficult to tell. Barely grazed the glove there. Floated on middle and leg, spinning away slightly and catching Miller on the pads who gets low to sweep. Loud shout, it's turned down and the review is taken by Mathews because it looks close. It's taken upstairs and replays show some glove. So Miller is safe.

Thisara Perera to Hashim Amla. OUT! No need to refer that. Thisara has cleaned up Hashim Amla and jumps in joy. A big wicket for Sri Lanka. The Mighty Hash was looking in sublime touch. Probably, the last event disturbed his concentration. Perera with a good length ball around off, he gets it to nip back in off the surface and Amla fails to block it from the crease. It goes right through his defense to peg the middle stump back. End of a wonderful knock by Hashim. He will be disappointed though as a century was in the offing. His century drought continues, it's been 10 innings since he got one.

Full and shaping away on off, de Kock swings across the line but gets a leading edge which flies over cover-point. Kusal Perera runs back, settles himself under the ball and takes a well-judged catch. Possibly de Kock acted a bit rashly because he wasn't getting too much strike. Suranga Lakmal to Quinton de Kock. Changes the angle and comes from around the wicket, angles it in on leg. It keeps going down and raps Quinton de Kock on the thigh pad. Stifled appeal, but Lakmal quickly withdraws realizing it was missing leg.

Lahiru Kumara to Quinton de Kock. Short of a good length angling across, de Kock gets off the mark immediately by tapping it in front of point for a quick single.
Lahiru Kumara to bowl from the other end with the second new ball. He too has a couple of slips positioned for him.
Suranga Lakmal to Hashim Amla. FOUR! Shot. A good over ruined a little. But there are those fast hands from Hashim Amla. He's offered a little width outside off and he pounces on it with a fierce cut through cover-point for a boundary.

Kusal Perera gives a quick interview to Roshan Abeysinghe. He says that the changed batting technique for him is to play on pace-friendly tracks. On his performance in the second ODI, he says that this is how it is, he tries his best and sometimes it doesn't come off. Adds that he is giving his best and is hoping for the best. Goes on to say that he tries to attack the ball and the opposition is attacking his weaknesses, so he needs to be smarter. Says that he has not changed his style much. Feels that the batsmen will have to take the responsibilities. States that the team has talked about its strengths and weaknesses, the series is still alive and he hopes that they will execute their basics right.
Pitch Report - Kepler Wessels out there analyzing the surface says in Day/Night ODIs and in Tests, the bowlers have enjoyed here. Adds the surface is firm and flat, without much grass covering. Reckons it's a good batting strip, full of runs. When asked which team will enjoy more, Kepler says South Africa as Sri Lanka have struggled against their pacers.
South Africa skipper, Faf du Plessis says it doesn't matter if he wins the toss or not, in ODIs at least, but Tests is a different matter. Feels the ball might spin a bit more in the afternoon. Adds there's a bit more moisture than before, so that's just changed his mind a bit about things. Mentions Reeza Hendricks comes in for Aiden Markram. States that the team is going well and he's happy with the mentality of his players. He ends by saying he's glad he's able to give a chance to the younger guys in the side.
Sri Lanka skipper, Angelo Mathews says the wicket looks really good and there might be movement early on. Informs there are a couple of changes as Lahiru Kumara and Dhananjaya de Silva come in for Kasun Rajitha and Shehan Jayasuriya. On what they need to do, Mathews says they just have to improve their basics, mainly on the field. Doesn't have any idea about a par score, but reckons 250-275 should be a minimum.
TOSS - The spin of the coin goes Sri Lanka's way again and they will bowl first!
We've witnessed a complete contrast from the Test series. The moment South Africa switched from the whites into their greens, they've seemed like a different beast altogether. The batsmen played spin like they've grown up in the subcontinent. Their bowling attack has been good as it is, but with an improved performance with the bat, the team looks much settled now. The skipper continues to lead from the front, with Quinton de Kock coming into his elements as well. It poses a tough challenge for Sri Lanka, who are staring down the barrel, of a major series loss at home. Already 0-2 down, and a loss here will do them in. The batting has been a bit underwhelming, to say the least, and it needs to step up to give a better chance to the bowlers. Plenty to play for in this first change of venue in this series. Stay tuned, it'll begin shortly...
Okay. After a 1-5 drubbing at the hands of India at home, South Africa badly needed this series win to raise their spirits. Remove the previous series and the one to England in England and you will find that they have actually won 9 out of their last 11 bilateral ODI series including this one, which is their second consecutive series win in the Island Nation. Now, their next aim will be a 5-0 whitewash. Can Sri Lanka avoid that? They have lost their 5th ODI series on the trot, winning just 1 out of their last 18 games. Not to mention that this is also their 10th straight loss in ODIs at home. Save aside that win against India in Dharamsala in 2017, they have struggled big time with the white ball. Join us on Wednesday, 8th August, 2018, at 1430 local (0900 GMT) for the 4th ODI at this very ground. ADIOS! TAKE CARE!
Victorious South African captain, Faf du Plessis says that it was a brilliant display of cricket by his side. First praises the batting, especially the debutant Reeza Hendricks. Then says that it is amazing to see one or two guys put their hands up in almost every game. On the high-scoring match, Faf says that he did enjoy the batsmen scoring runs, even against his team's bowling, as it was a good test for his side. He also says that he enjoyed his bowlers going for wickets in spite of the runs being scored. On his own injury, Faf says that he will assess tomorrow and then check how his 'young' shoulder responds in the morning.
Sri Lankan skipper, Angelo Mathews, admits that it was disappointing the way Sri Lanka started with the ball, but is happy for the fact that they pulled it back in the middle overs. However, he rues the way the death overs panned out, adding that 364 was too much to chase on this wicket. Praises Hendricks, Duminy and Miller and stresses that the Lankan team is developing, on how to play different phases in one-day cricket.
Reeza Hendricks is the Man Of The Match for his scintillating century. Hendricks says that he already had a taste of international cricket having played T20Is but is elated to have done well in the One-day format. Stresses that with such a good side, it is very difficult to break in and is happy to have done well. On the surface, he says that he enjoyed batting on it as it was very true. On being asked about recording the fastest century by a debutant in ODIs, Reeza smiles and says that he was not aware of any such record.
Lungi Ngidi is having a chat with Shaun Pollock. He says that the Proteas were aware that it was a good pitch given the score their batsmen had put up. What they did not expect was the ball not moving much, with the track being absolutely flat. But they felt it resembled a true South African wicket, where you get value for your shots. Admits that the plan was always to try and pick up wickets and not be defensive. Is smiling on being asked about the series win, especially after the drubbing in the Tests. On the collision with de Kock, Ngidi laughs and says that he felt that he ran into a brick wall. Will go back to the dressing room and check the replays, he adds, to see what happened exactly. Now for the presentation.
Earlier, Angelo Mathews won the toss and decided to do something different - chase. However, a half century from Amla, followed by a century from Reeza Hendricks on debut and then some late blows from JP Duminy and David Miller took the score to 363. Thisara Perera picked up 4 wickets but went for plenty in the second half of his spell as the Proteas hammered 71 in the last 5 overs.
Even though they had a big score behind their backs, the bowlers aimed to take wickets and bowl the opposition out. Lungi Ngidi was impressive again and finished with 4 wickets while Phehlukwayo surprisingly picked up 3, without pace or movement. Quinton de Kock rotated his bowlers quite effectively in Faf du Plessis' absence, with only Tabraiz Shamsi finishing his quota of 10 overs.
The two Dananjayas got together - one with an 'H' and the other without 'H'. They played normal cricket, showing the top order how good a pitch this was. Managed to add 95 and give some respectability to the score. Dhananjaya de Silva was unlucky to miss out on a deserving ton and perhaps we might have had a closer game if the hosts had managed to string more partnerships.
With the target as steep as 364, it was no surprise that the Lankans came out all guns swinging. With the ball now swinging, the home side kept losing its batsmen one by one. At 155/6, needing more than 200, it seemed like we would be back home earlier than usual. But it was not to be.
So the series is sealed with 2 matches to go. South Africa have won 3 games on the trot in this series and 11 in succession against Sri Lanka. The only positive for the Lankans was that there was some fight offered by Akila Dananjaya and Dhananjaya de Silva, reducing the defeat margin to under 100.
Lungi Ngidi to Suranga Lakmal. OUT! Caught and bowled! Match and series win for South Africa. A short ball outside off, Lakmal looks to pull but gets a massive top edge which goes straight up in the air. Two people go for the catch - the bowler and the keeper. Neither look at each other nor communicate. Both get ready to take it. Almost collide into each other. But because Ngidi is taller, he takes it with his palm skywards, way over de Kock's face, leaving the captain smiling. SOUTH AFRICA WIN BY 78 RUNS!
Lungi Ngidi to Suranga Lakmal. A short ball on middle, slogged towards mid on.
Tabraiz Shamsi to Lahiru Kumara. Goes right back in his crease and blocks. Shamsi finishes his 10-over quota - the first to do so in this run chase - 10-0-62-2.

Meanwhile, a bit of a positive news for Sri Lanka. They are losing this series here to the Proteas but the Colts have just managed to eke out a 7-run win over India in the third Youth ODI at the SSC, Colombo. The team successfully defended a 'modest' score of 220. After losing both the Tests by an innings and then the first ODI, the Under-19 team has bounced back well to win two on the trot. Positive signs for the future?

Andile Phehlukwayo to Dhananjaya de Silva. OUT! There is a feather and de Silva has to go! No century for him, which was the only interesting part in this dead run chase. Phehlukwayo has his third. A short ball outside off, Dhananjaya looks to pull but misses. There seems to be a deviation and a noise as the Proteas appeal for the catch but umpire Nigel Llong has not heard anything. Not surprising. The crowd is making way too much noise. Captain de Kock is confident and wants a review and the first replay seems to indicate an edge. Snickometer confirms it as well. The decision is reversed and the batsman has to go. Russel Arnold informs us on air that DdS was walking towards the dressing room once he hit it but then stopped when Llong did not raise his finger. Fine enterprising innings. If only he had partners...
Boy, we have a review now. Has de Silva under-edged this one to the keeper?
Mid off goes down, while fine leg comes up.
Andile Phehlukwayo to Dhananjaya de Silva. SIX! Second of the over! This is now de Silva's highest ODI score. Some stylish way of getting there too. Backs away to the leg side and then slaps the length ball over cover. Goes all the way.

DRINKS BREAK. Another of those you-will-not-miss-much-even-if-you-sleep-for-a-day matches. The South African score is way too much for the Lankans and the home side is not even able to offer a fight. Tabraiz Shamsi to Angelo Mathews. OUT! The decision stays as it is as umpire's call comes into play. The review is retained by Sri Lanka but they are being detained by South Africa. Full and around middle, Mathews gets down to sweep but it is too full to be employing the broom. He misses and is hit on the pads. Shamsi appeals vociferously and eventually, the umpire gives in. Angelo initially starts to walk but then Dhananjaya calls him back, reminding him of the DRS. Unfortunately, that cannot help him or his side much as Hawk Eye shows the ball to be clipping the leg stump, which means he has to go.

Mistimes his pull and it goes towards deep square leg. Willem Mulder gets across to his right, goes low and takes a fantastic catch because the ball was dipping in. Nearly drops it but holds on. Third wicket for Lungi Ngidi and he will be happy, even though he has gone for runs. Sri Lanka, well, need 240 more from 183 balls to keep the series alive.

A bit of a delay with this already-snoozing over-rate. One of the batsmen is down - is it Mendis? Seems to be struggling with cramps. The physio is out in the middle. Meanwhile, the crowd is finally realizing that enjoying the music is perhaps not a bad option as opposed to the cricket...

Attempting an innocuous flick off his pads and getting a faint tickle behind. The umpire initially shows no interest in the appeal and on the insistence of de Kock, they go for the referral. The Snicko shows deflection and that's all the third umpire needs to overturn the on-field call. The move to send Thisara up the order flops.
