Taking into account the way the wicket is playing, plus the fact that the hosts have three quality spinners in their ranks, the Proteas have a difficult task ahead of them, to say the least. Their inability to bowl out Sri Lanka towards the end of Day 1 could seriously come back to haunt them. They're going to have to play out of their skins now. On Day 1, Sri Lanka started the day well with a good opening stand, but then had their momentum halted by Keshav Maharaj in the afternoon session, only to be revived again by Dhananjaya de Silva and Roshen Silva. Though, Maharaj had his say again and took 8 wickets in total at the end of the day, toppling the Lankan batsmen with ease. He scalped the last wicket today as well.

So, finally, South Africa managed to take the final wicket of the Lankan innings, but it's probably come a little too late. They allowed the last pair to add 74 runs together, thereby allowing Sri Lanka to get close to 340, a score which is gargantuan on this turning surface. It was expected that the tourists would clean things up rather early this morning, but Rangana Herath and Akila Dananjaya played some attacking cricket and put their side in a strong position.

Both the teams will be partially happy and partially sad after the action on Day 1 as both of them have an almost equal foothold in the game as of now. Considering the visitors could only score 199 in both the innings combined in the last Test, the Lankans will be hoping to get to the psychological total of 300 and finish off their challenge with the bat later on. Earlier in the day, Sri Lanka started on a positive note. Their openers stitched a 116-run stand and gave them the upper hand. However, they lost their way post Lunch with a couple of wickets. Dhananjaya de Silva along with Roshen Silva added 54 for the 5th wicket to get them back on track. The former then stroked his way to his 3rd Test fifty, however, there were no real contributions from the lower middle order. Akila Dananjaya is still in the middle with Rangana Herath and the hosts will hope he gets quick runs on Day 2 to extend the Proteas' worries.

South Africa will be happy with the day's result after the start the home team had. They have one man to thank - Keshav Maharaj. The left-arm orthodox spinner took 8/116, which is the best for any visiting spinner in Sri Lanka and helped restrict Sri Lanka to 277/9. Perhaps now Faf du Plessis will regret the decision of not playing the second spinner. Kagiso Rabada got the other lone wicket, but had there been Tabraiz Shamsi in the playing XI, this would paint another picture.

The Sri Lankans will enjoy their lunch as both their openers remain unbeaten at the end of the first session. South Africa have found it hard to make much happen. Winning the toss, the hosts have used the conditions to their advantage and scored 93 runs. There were a few nervy moments, but otherwise Dimuth Karunaratne and Danushka Gunathilaka have done well. The surface isn't doing much to assist the bowlers, the seamers especially, so come the second session, Faf du Plessis will have to mix it up more and be innovative with his fields. The move to drop Tabraiz Shamsi for an extra pacer seems more strange now, given how even part-timer Aiden Markram has got the ball to spin appreciably. Let's see how it plays out further. Faf du Plessis says they have worked on a few plans and they would try to implement them in this game. Mentions there are two changes - Theunis de Bruyn is in and there are three fast bowlers (The other change is Lungi Ngidi). States that on this wicket Sri Lanka will be more comfortable facing a second spin bowler, so wants to inject pace. Feels Test cricket takes a lot of application, unlike any other format, so they want to trust their defense more and get better results this time.

Suranga Lakmal says the wicket looks good and it's a good batting track, hence the decision. Informs there is one change as Akila Dananjaya comes in for Lakshan Sandakan. Reckons the cricket they played in Galle was their best and they would like to put in a similar performance this time out too.

Pitch Report - Russel Arnold doing the pitch report says it's a lot warmer here. Goes on to say that over the last couple of years, the surface has taken a lot of spin. Adds it's very dry, bare and has a lot of rough areas and also has a bit more pace and bounce compared to Galle. Continues saying there will be a lot of spin, so it will be a trial by spin again. Reckons the team winning the toss will bat first and they should put up a score around 270-300 and let the wicket do the rest.

This match should be another test for the visiting team and it won't be a surprise if they stage a comeback given their class and record in the longest format. Hello and welcome to the second and final Test match between Sri Lanka and South Africa at Sinhalese Sports Club, Colombo. After the debacle of the first Test, the visiting team will be looking to put some skill in their performance. Their batsmen especially need to get into the game and show some resistance. The home team, however, did everything right. Their batsmen used the home conditions to put up runs on the board, played both the spin and fast bowling effectively and essentially batted the opposition out of the match.

The three spinners did it all by themselves. Shared the 10 wickets between them, with Dananjaya taking 5, Dilruwan bagging 4 and Herath getting 1. Skipper du Plessis and Amla provided some resistance, with de Kock doing his small bit, but nobody could carry on and dig in their heels. The move to bring Akila in this game has paid dividends, and the hosts will surely be reaping them further.

Pitch report - Shaun Pollock and Kepler Wessels are reporting from the middle. They say that the pitch has dried up even more, puff of dust is coming off from the surface when the ball lands and it's going to assist spinners more than the fast bowler. Hello and welcome to the third day of the second and final Test match between Sri Lanka and South Africa at Sinhalese Sports Club, Colombo. The home team is on top. It went through the Proteas' line-up on Day 2 and extended its dominance with more runs on the board. The lead has swelled up to 365 runs, which is more than handy. The interesting thing now is to see when will they declare and put South Africa in to bat. There are two more days left in this Test, but perhaps we might not require them considering the state of the pitch right now. The play gets underway in a short while, hang around!

It's all Sri Lanka for the moment. If they had enforced the follow-on, maybe the game would have got over early on Day 3. South Africa will have to try and figure out a way to get the hosts bundled out and at least put up a fight in their last innings. Looking at the way they batted throughout the series, one would say there doesn't seem to be much scope for them.

The technique of 'how to play spin on these sub-continent pitches' will have to be answered by the South African batters. It took just 34.5 overs for the home team to get them all out. Akila Dananjaya picked up his 2nd 5-wicket haul and Dilruwan Perera gave him good company taking 4 wickets. For the visitors, only their skipper Faf du Plessis and keeper Quinton de Kock showed some intent with the bat. The rest were just mentally not prepared to tackle spin as there was just one fifty-plus stand. Earlier in the day, Rangana Herath and Akila Dananjaya pilled on 74 runs for the last wicket and stretched their team's total to 338.

If not the first, the second day is surely won by Sri Lanka. They outplayed the visitors in all the departments to get more than an upper hand in this game. The openers once again gave them the headstart stitching 91 together. Dimuth Karunaratne who became just the fourth Sri Lankan to get 4 back-to-back fifties in each Test innings is showing some character. Kusal Mendis ran himself out but the former skipper, Angelo Mathews ensured Sri Lanka did not slip further.
