Sri Lanka vs South Africa Highlights And Cricket Score 2nd Match - ODI Commentary

End of Over : 50.0 SL: 244/8

Lungi Ngidi and Andile Phehlukwayo were the pick of the bowlers, taking 3 apiece. Tabraiz Shamsi didn't provide a breakthrough but he was frugal. Having said all that, it won't be a walk in the park for the Proteas. In the last game, they initially stuttered against the spin test but overcame it later on. Though it is a below par total, Sri Lanka have some wily spinners in the ranks capable of defending it. It promises to be an exciting chase. Join us shortly after the break.

The wicket-keeper batsman missed out on his ton though but the Lankan skipper continued to hold one end up. He scored an important fifty but kept losing partners at the other end. As a result, he couldn't tee off and kept on rotating the strike. Credit to the South African bowlers too as they bowled consistent lines and lengths to keep the pressure on the opposition. They only conceded 51 in the last 10 overs, taking the fizz out of the hosts' innings and denying them any kind of momentum.

A disciplined bowling performance from South Africa has allowed them to restrict Sri Lanka under 250. They once again threatened to trigger a collapse in Powerplay 1 but couldn't as this time Niroshan Dickwella put his hand up. He along with Kusal Perera and Angelo Mathews, stitched useful partnerships, giving some sort of a foundation to his side.

49.6 1

Ends up missing it altogether and is struck in front. The visitors go up in unison and up goes the umpire's finger. Kusal keeps walking and doesn't consult his partner for the review. The replay shows that he was a dead duck. So after being hit for a couple of boundaries, Ngidi has bounced back with aplomb. He will be on a hat-trick in the next over.

Kusal Mendis comes out to bat.

1.5 W

Lungi Ngidi to Upul Tharanga. OUT! Ngidi draws first blood! A rather poor shot to gift his wicket away, not what you expect from a batsman who has loads of experience in ODIs. Good length ball around off, shaping away from Tharanga. He doesn't move his feet and throws his bat at it, away from the body. The result is a faint under edge and de Kock behind the stumps is as safe as houses. Jubilation for South Africa.

1.4 4

Lungi Ngidi to Upul Tharanga. FOUR! Crisp! Fuller length ball around off, Tharanga leans ahead and strokes it beautifully through extra cover to pick up his second boundary.

1.3 0

Lungi Ngidi to Upul Tharanga. Shaping away from Upul who leaves it alone.

1.2 4

Lungi Ngidi to Upul Tharanga. FOUR! Poor delivery and duly punished! Full ball on the pads, Tharanga flicks it over square leg to find the fence. The first boundary of the innings.

1.1 0

Lungi Ngidi to Upul Tharanga. That's a peach! We saw a lot of occasions in the previous game where the balls took off from the pitch. Though this time the surface looks a lot drier, still there is some fizz in it. Back of a length ball on middle and off, shoots off with extra bounce. Tharanga feels for it and is beaten all ends up.

1.1 wd

Lungi Ngidi to Upul Tharanga. Wide! Just like Rabada, Ngidi is off the radar first up. Delivers a short and wide delivery to which Tharanga shoulders his arms.

They are really balanced which makes them a force to reckon with. The momentum is on their side and the visitors need to cash on it but it won't be an easy task against the hosts who will be eyeing a revenge. Pitch report and toss will come up in a while...

End of Over : 42.5 SA: 246/6

Done and dusted with this game. Sri Lanka suffered their 9th consecutive loss at home and need a big turnaround in the next match if they want to stay alive in this series. The third ODI is on Sunday in Pallekele and we look forward to your company at 0945 local (0415 GMT). Until then, it's goodbye and cheers!

South Africa skipper Faf du Plessis says that they are renowned for fighting back. Admits that Test series was disappointing. Adds that today it was tricky as well but they adapted well. Considers the pitch to be a decent one but towards the end it got a bit tired. Is pleased that they are chasing well at the moment and putting the pressure on the Sri Lankan spinners. Terms their bowling performance as exceptional and praises his bowlers for pulling it back whenever Sri Lanka tried to sniff a comeback. Praises his team for executing the plans superbly. On him getting out in the 40s with great consistency on this tour, du Plessis replies that he is not thinking much about it and is just trying to stay positive.

Sri Lanka skipper, Angelo Mathews says that they gave away too many wickets upfront and never got going. Also adds they didn't hold on to the catches which cost them. Further says that their bowlers were bowling in good areas but the fielding let them down. On Niroshan Dickwella's injury, Angelo informs that he has gone for a scan and hopes that he will be okay. Mentions that there are a lot of positives and they still can stay alive in the series if they win the next game. On his own batting form, Mathews admits that he couldn't really get away with the shots as the wickets kept falling but is pleased with his batting. On his fitness, he replies that he is doing fine.

Man of the Match, Quinton de Kock says that he is not too sure what has changed but good work is finally paying off. Reckons that it's not spinning as much as it was during the Test matches. Adds that the last two months have been difficult and it's always challenging anywhere in the subcontinent. On the pitch, he feels that the surface stayed the same throughout and maybe spun a little more in the second half but was a good one for batting overall.

The old cliche - Catches win matches! Sri Lanka dropped quite a few and their ground fielding was also mediocre. That didn't allow their bowlers to build any kind of pressure and eventually it cost them dearly. They dropped de Kock when he was on 18 and 24, and the South African wicket-keeper made them pay. The bowling of Akila Dananjaya was the only positive that the hosts can take from this game as apart from him, the rest struggled. Also, the way the South African batsmen have decoded the spin mystery is really commendable.

Chasing a target of 245 could have been a tricky task for the visiting team but their openers provided a steady start and laid a strong platform. Quinton de Kock, in particular, looked in blazing form and dominated Sri Lanka's spinners. He never allowed the pressure to build by finding the fence at regular intervals. As a result, in spite of a few wickets going down, South Africa were never rattled. Faf du Plessis and JP Duminy's knocks threw Sri Lanka's chances out of the window. Towards the end, the two all-rounders, Mulder and Phehlukwayo finished the formalities with utmost ease.

Tables have turned in the shorter format. Another comprehensive win for the Proteas as they go 2-0 up in the 5-match ODI series. First up, their bowlers did a commendable job in restricting Sri Lanka to a below par total. Niroshan Dickwella played a knock of substance but the rest didn't contribute much. Angelo Mathews' innings was on the slower side and that failed to give Sri Lanka the much-needed kick in the death overs. Credit to the Protean bowlers also for bowling superbly with both the new and old balls.

42.5 4

Prabath Jayasuriya to Quinton de Kock. NOT OUT! No bat and it bounced as well. Hmm... Waste of technology, now Sri Lanka have none left. Tossed up ball around middle, turning in, de Kock fails to connect with his sweep shot and it goes off his pads, hits his elbow and then loops behind. Kusal Perera stretches across to his right and takes the ball before appealing. The bowler also joins but the umpire stays put. Angelo Mathews has a word with his keeper and then reluctantly goes for the DRS. The replays roll in and the Snicko finds no wood. Further, they show that it bounced before going into the gloves of Perera. To follow the whole procedure, the third umpire checks for the lbw as well. But the ball is turning too much and is missing the stumps. Nothing going Lanka's way.

Review time! It's for a catch taken behind by the keeper. But is there any bat involved? Let's wait and watch...

Akila Dananjaya to Hashim Amla. OUT! Stop the press, Sri Lanka have taken a catch. Only by just though as Dananjaya was in no control of it. A soft dismissal against the run of play, have to say. A friendly full toss by Akila, Amla advances down the track to meet the ball but ends up chipping it straight back. Dananjaya tries to catch it in his followthrough but it bursts out of his hands and he somehow manages to stick it back with his hands near his thigh. Phew. Are they allergic to the ball? Anyway, Hashim departs after giving a good start. 154 needed off 216 balls.
